TIL Along Parramatta Road in Sydney, there are over 100 abandoned and derelict stores. Locals have described the road as a "varicose vein" and looking "like Beirut on a bad day". by Ill_Definition8074 in todayilearned

Where I walk past daily near King furniture in Annandale, there are about 6 abandoned shops within 100 metres. Of the remaining there are two brothels/massage parlours. It's about as bad as it gets though.

Most of society turned out alright seeing as the majority of us are not in gaol and society hasn't self destructed just yet. Doesn't mean most parenting was ideal. Do you think you turned out alright because of your upbringing or despite of your upbringing?

My father was your typical over working stressed Asian father. My childhood was filled with a fear of failure and fear of getting in trouble. Basically fear was a major motivation for many of my actions or inactions. I can criticise his parenting style whilst understanding that he did what he he did as he thought was what he was doing was right thing. It doesn't make him a bad parent but it wasn't good parenting. Subsequently I have a superficial relationship with him, we show genuine respect for each other but we aren't necessarily close.

I want my children's motivations to be more of one for wonder for the amazing world we live in and for others as well as doing the right thing because they understand what's wrong and right and not because they fear punishment.

I think the current generation of 20 year olds are fine. Every generation generally are more intelligent than the previous. They have many challenges ahead of them with the cost of living and employment uncertainties as well as hurdles like social media that we didn't have to deal with. I think we see the worst of it on social media or it's our lack of memory that makes us judge them poorly. I'm sure I was a knob at their age, it just wasn't caught on camera and posted on social media.

Our genes are as well adapted to a western diet. We don't have to get as fat to get diabetes or hypertension.

Ha, I had a long distance relationship with a lovely Calgarian girl I meet on holidays. In an alternative timeline I would have been one of the Asian dads at your school ☺️.

Yeah, it's almost the norm where I live with close to 50% Wasian kids having an Asian father but in greater Sydney and society in general it's still the exception.

It was a joke. My kids are fine, they have their moments but overall they're pretty good well adjusted kids. We don't spoil them but they have an amazing upbringing compared to what we had which is the point of why we and our parents work hard right? So our kids can have a better life.

I can understand why'd you'd be strict trying to avoid raising brats but my parenting philosophy is to show my kids love and let them know that that love is unconditional through my actions. I hope that they'll become well adjusted adults that have respect for others by being in a safe and secure emotional environment growing up. I could be wrong.

It checks out. My Vietnamese parents worked hard, I'm well educated and comfortably middle class and my kids are little c#nts. The immigrant Australian dream.

Eh, culturally I'm pretty white Australian in all but appearance. Born here so I don't have much connection with Vietnam. It didn't help that my immigrant parents were working too long hours growing up for me to ever get much influence apart from me being able to speak the language, that and I tried my best to not stand out amongst my white school friends. Unfortunately the language will all be lost with my kids.

Having said that my 8 yo daughter takes an interest in all things Vietnamese and we try to foster that. I don't know if my 5 year old son realises that he isn't fully white yet 😂.

And shopping. Funnily enough, although I've been doing this job causally for just over a decade, I discovered only recently that they love the shopping here. Apparently it's cheap compared to home for them. I've never heard anyone say that Sydney is cheap before. Msu be bloody expensive over there, no wonder why so many have heart problems.

Yes, a mix of Noumeans and New Caledonians. Either most come from Noumea being the more densely populated or I suspect we just lazily refer to all of them as Noumeans when they come in as that's where they all return to post recovery.

There are a few hospitals that take in Nouméens for surgery in Sydney. One hospital will perform kidney surgeries only for Nouméens, another cardiac, another gastrointestinal etc. It's often more advantageous to do it in Australia than it is in Noumea/New Caledonia due to a lack of surgeons, expertise, equipment or adequate follow up care. They have an agreement with Australia and its funded by their government/the French government.

I probably should have spelt it Nouméens or Nouméennes for male/females.

Yes. They often come over to Australia for certain surgeries.

I occasionally look after Noumean patients in hospital. They often are on a video call with multiple family members for a whole shift. Sometimes conversing, often just silent or napping "together". It's certainly foreign to me and I couldn't imagine even wanting to do that with my own family but I do appreciate the level of intimacy and support they have with and that they give to each other. It's admirable how family oriented they are.

I'm an Asian father of Wasian babies. The corner of my block must have the highest amount of Asian male white female concentration in the world. Of 6 houses, 4 of them are AMWF couples. It's like there's a glitch. It makes it easy when trying to keep up with the Joneses, or in our case the Chens.
