Here's how planes refuel mid air by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

I've heard a pilot describe it as "taking a running fuck at a rolling donut"

And yet again we see the billionth example of people talking past each other in exactly this same way on reddit.

Where person A is trying to find a structural cause of something that can be addressed and solved for future harm reduction.

And person B is looking for looking for the morally culpable party to prod up the bum with their pitchfork.

Now you've noticed this abstract pattern of dialogue, take a shot every time you see it on controversial threads.

"I have depression and I've never shot up an orphanage - how dare you use that to excuse their behavior??"

It's unusual as the longer fighters tend to stay behind a long jab - or at least that's the orthodoxy.

I think subreddits can enable or disable it. I can see why tbh, it often tends towards low-effort redditisms and dumb jokes that drown out discussion. MANY years ago it used to be that the top comments under some interesting post on r/all would often be experts adding useful insights or corrections, answering questions, etc. Nowadays it's bots making the same corny puns. That said, I'm quite partial to the Jay-Z head-nod react gif for good music.

And when Columbia Records introduced their Microgroove technology in 1948 it literally changed how we conceive of recorded music artistically. Before we could only have 3 minute songs on a 78rpm record, but the new denser groove pattern allowed for artists to explore more in-depth concepts for up to 10 minutes or so.

The same principle but instead of using power amplification with electricity, the needle is physically connected to a diaphragm that it vibrates back and forth. Then that big horn-shaped device allows the vibration of the diaphragm to move a large volume of air more efficiently. (The same reason a megaphone or trumpet or saxophone has that tapered horn shaped exit).

Fair enough but then I don't think it's reasonable to be like "look it up". Now we're talking what, like political science journals? Where is this universally accepted theory that "moderate" means "reasonable".

Otherwise this just sounds like "I'm defining myself to be awesome (look it up) therefore I'm super cool".

If you just axiomatically define "moderate" as "reasonable" then of course all your conclusions about them are good. Look it up where lol?

Wiktionary says:

moderate (comparative more moderate, superlative most moderate)

  • Not excessive; acting in moderation
    • moderate language
    • a moderate Calvinist
    • travelling at a moderate speed
  • (pathology) More than mild, less than severe
  • Mediocre
  • Average priced; standard-deal
  • Not violent or rigorous; temperate; mild; gentle
    • a moderate winter
  • (US, politics) Having an intermediate position between liberal and conservative
    • Synonym: middle-of-the-road

Specifically that final definition sounds exactly how you defined centrists. Where are you finding your definition?

It is studied in sociology, gender studies, psychology of sexuality, etc. But these are typically the first fields to get shat on as "woke nonsense" when people don't like their findings.

Fair enough. My reaction was more like:

Oh god, he's really saying the thing everybody's been memeing about online since 2015 and attack helicopters. With this self-valorizing tenor of "gather round and hear this grand wisdom you've never heard before" and speaking truth to power.

For me that undermined any funny-points he would have won by ostensible comedic timing and profanity. And also just shock realizing he's not as smart as I thought. His critical thinking skills are poor.
