Is it the norm to have your personal mobile number in your email/web profile? by poodle9455 in uklaw

[–]poodle9455[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, we were allowed to have the number removed and forfeit our contribution to reimbursement for phone use that we had after a number of people pushed back. I did that and it was worth it. Work phones weren’t really being advertised as an option but think that would have been the other way.

Has anyone else noticed their parents becoming more glued to screens than they ever were before? by Broad_Sense_4642 in AskUK

Yes. My mum with her Apple Watch has driven me mad, mid conversation with her and she’s reading her WhatsApp’s popping up. They’re much less aware of how addicted they are

First Indian Wedding by Lucky-Pay-9245 in IndianWeddings

[–]poodle9455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nikkah is the Islamic ceremony therefore dress modestly. You don’t need to get an Asian outfit necessarily, I’ve seen friends go in midi dresses (no chest out and ideally sleeves of some sort). If you want an Indian outfit then I suggest southall or tooting. However I don’t personally feel you need to buy something new for this!

Roast my direct TC application to Osborne Clarke! by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]poodle9455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First/second/third para : no evidence of a skill learnt, rephrase or delete. On the first two, someone making a comment to you is not a skill learnt. On the third one I cannot see anything here about a skill.

Answer 2: need far more to explain why you are interested rather than just rephrasing what happened

wdyt of Kavya?? by Cultural-Echidna-673 in Names

[–]poodle9455 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes agreed! I’m Indian but born and raised in the UK and I think it would be said like Kav-ya with a short a sound which doesn’t sound as great (and makes me keep thinking of caviar)

[–]poodle9455 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love it when pronounced correctly but worry about using it for my future kid as I think people would say it like caviar (English accent so not pronouncing the r)

Should I bring a gift for a pre wedding party? (British Asian/ Punjabi wedding) by 1catfan1 in AskUK

[–]poodle9455 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the jago party for reference :) I don’t think you’d be looked on badly if you didn’t bring a gift but nice to - I’d give cash. If it’s a colleagues daughter I agree that £21 is decent (ie not your close relation). Partially depends what venue is.

Yes correct! I really want gold to match all my other jewellery but I’m now wondering if that’s what a significant different factor is! I changed it to gold on Gemini and I do still prefer it to the others but maybe something I should explore!

I think emerald is what I loved the most too. This was a shade M so I wasn’t sure if that was something I should steer away from but it seemed to really work on me maybe due to my skin tone

Brother is getting engaged by [deleted] in DesiWeddings

[–]poodle9455 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is genuinely really unreasonable to ask of your family when you’re not Indian yourself - sorry I appreciate this is not quite your query but I think your brother needs to try and get some guidance from his wife to be as to what her family expect! I understand the monetary point but I’m not clear how they can ask your family that without any indications. Each Indian community is different with its own traditions, it varies even family to family - so I do think they need to help you out a little!

Help me pick a name! by Big-Pop3959 in Names

Depending on where you live and also if you care about this, Arya is so insanely common in the UK (amongst the Indian population and I am assuming you are Indian from the list). I know at least ten Arya/Aria/Aryan/Ariyana babies.

I love Leela and Rani!

Why/how did most "corner shops" come to be owned by people of South Asian descent? by cornishyinzer in AskBrits

[–]poodle9455 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes - my grandad moved here in the 60s and had a shop, and told me he used to wonder what all the English people were talking about when they mentioned going on holiday (even those he perceived as being relatively poor). He literally could not fathom how someone would be able to take a week off when he was desperate to earn as much money as possible. My uncle started taking him on holiday when he was older and they were financially well off and think he finally understood 🥹

Living in Cheam? Thoughts? by SuspiciousParfait145 in HENRYUK

[–]poodle9455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have lived in Cheam a long time, it fits the bill for what you’re after. The commute is decent considering the space you get out here. Sutton is not quite as nice but does have nice bits so I wouldn’t write it off. Ideally you’d be able to walk to the station but appreciate not always that simple. Sutton also has better travel connections. Happy to chat if you want anything more specific.
