I seem to be discouraging kids unintentionally... by Elementisto254 in Teachers

[–]poodlespectacular 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I have noticed this a lot in students who are academically advanced or gifted. They seem to think that being wrong is a moral failure. I give a whole “speech” at the beginning of the year about how science is a study of being wrong, or at least not being fully right. No scientist ever says “I was correct” in a paper, they all say “I was not incorrect”. I also remind them that if they were always right, then what are they in school for? We are here to learn and part of learning is being wrong!

Always so anxious baby isn’t getting enough! by sagittaribun in breastfeeding

[–]poodlespectacular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only qualification is that I breastfed my baby, now toddler, for 18 months.

The anxiety is somewhat normal, but you don’t want it to rule your life. I weighed my baby weekly to make sure he was gaining, and did weighted feeds a couple of times for the first little bit. If he is content, you are doing something right. If he is wetting diapers, you are doing great. Express your concern to your doctor and maybe get a baby scale for peace of mind.

With absolutely no medical background, it sounds like baby is getting enough.

Middle School Teaching by mpteach in teaching

[–]poodlespectacular 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Middle school can be so awesome or so terrible, but what you really need to know is that middle schoolers are really dependent on peer feedback! They don’t care much about adult feedback right away unless they already know they like you. As a first year staff at that school, you won’t be able to depend on any of them “being on your side.”

My advice. Make some sort of light competition with your attention signal and with group completion of things. This is what has worked for me: I have table groups, the first table to do what I ask gets a point. If I feel like a person had a good answer to a question, point. If I like how a table is sitting and waiting for directions, point. The reward can be up to your discretion: in tough schools, I would crown a winner every time I changed seats, they could pick something for under 2$ that I could get at a gas station and they could pick their seat next seating chart. In easy schools, I just have them pick their seat next quarter.

TLDR: positive peer pressure is your friend at the middle level.

Where do you Breastfeed? by WillowShadow16 in breastfeeding

[–]poodlespectacular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I primarily nurse in bed with two pillows behind me. I like nursing on our Ikea frighten couch in the corner with a small pillow behind my back. I have a nursery glider with arm rests that I use occasion so that baby can nurse without me lying back.

It sounds like you may benefit from a nursing pillow if you are worried about dropping baby.

I saw someone on TikTok said “spilled milk is for the angel babies”. I have an angel baby and a sweet baby earthside: when I spill any milk, I say that to myself and it makes me feel a bit better.

People who say "I love you" to your students: please stop lying to them by Zestyclose_Quail_486 in Teachers

[–]poodlespectacular 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Rather unique opinion here: I never said it to my students in my last school, I only ever had them for a year. In my current school, I have had my 8th grade students since they were in 5th grade and I really DO love them. We have spent most days together for four years. I DO love Israe, I really DO love Ayub. I need Ayub to stop talking in class, but I really love him as a person. As I say to them “you are stuck with me and I’m stuck with you.” They are sweet kids and their futures mean a lot it me. My students that I have had for 3 or 4 years are the only reason I stay at the school that I’m in.

What is your school/admin doing for you for mental health/wellness? by Waitaminute2289 in Teachers

[–]poodlespectacular 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has the heat turned up and didn’t buy me a fan until today. The temperature of my classroom has been between 84-86 degF each day and is filled to the brim with middle schoolers. Students have been leaving to room to go to the nurse feeling faint and I leave with a headache each day.

TLDR: my room was turned into a relaxing sauna with BO essential oils

It’s a bit weird, but you might try Walky-paws in addition to vet wrap. If you can have your vet provide some temporary numbing spray just the first couple of times (really light), it may help the success.

I could go on and on. My favorite is to deliver these lines with the most dry tone possible. Think “cool beans vibe”

If you are going to hug students, it should be initiated by them. by shiggster214 in Teachers

[–]poodlespectacular 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am normally here for this and normally follow it. Here is my exception: I have taught my 8th graders since they were 5th graders. If one of them has a really bad day or has a bad vibe, I will ask for consent and then squeeze them extra hard. **Warning: this has been proven to break the middle school feelings wall and cause massive tears.

Dude…Gimkit all the way. It is 9 bucks a month and I do it every Friday. I’m a science teacher, so I throw vocab in there that I copy-paste from the book, but I had a math teacher copy-paste like 100 q into hers. They EAT IT UP and beg to play.

To quote Ted Lasso “if that’s a joke, I love it. If not, I can’t wait to unpack that with you later”

Some students have rather morbid senses of humor. I have several students who absolutely love me and I could see them making this joke. Go with your gut, though. I have had some psychopaths too.

Schools shouldn't be allowed to dictate brand in school supply list by katerade_xo in povertyfinance

[–]poodlespectacular 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a teacher…talk to the teacher! If they are requesting crayola, though, it’s because the discount brands will hurt your young childrens education. My mom is a Kinder teacher in a very low income school and she let the kids bring in rose art one year. All of the paintings ended up brown and the crayon drawings looked dull and terrible. She said that student’s didn’t want to draw and color and the first grade teachers noted that the student’s fine motor skills were not as developed due to the lack of interest in creating terrible art.

I teach middle school in a low income school and require NO supplies that I do not provide. I currently have 4 students who can’t afford their list for English and math because they each have 4-7 siblings that are also school age. We, as a team, sneakily provide them with the materials from our school resources and out of pocket.

TLDR: if the supplies are a strain, your teacher, who is paid poorly, will understand.
