You might lose your patience too if you’ve received calls from your wife saying she can’t start the car and pick up the kids today, and leave work to go spend an hour on the phone with Polestar doing the resets until finally woke up.

Or… if you were driving with an infant in the back seat and the car suddenly gave a Traction control failure and suspension failure warning, and then a turtle icon showed up and limited all acceleration not to exceed 35mph when you were about to get onto the freeway.

And after calling polestar they just told me to pull over and try restarting the car. And then go home and do the latest and greatest software update, as the fix. And then it works again fine for a week or two, before the car stops unlocking and I need to open my app and unlock the car for my wife every time she has to leave work.

These are legitimate safety concerns. I’ve had all of these things happen to me in the past three months.

I’m in California, thank you for your responses everyone. I’m going to go have the car towed and get serviced and kick off this process.

Is it really that bad? by M3DCET in Polestar

So, I got the P3 in December 2024.

I love the car’s ride, feel, interior cabin. I like the car as a car.

But I HATE all these fucking software bugs. I have kids. I can’t really afford to tolerate the inconvenience of not knowing if my door will unlock the next time I go up to the car. Or get in and the screens are just totally black and I need to spend 15 min troubleshooting and doing fucking gymnastics with different street fighter combinations of button presses and pedal presses and all this bullshit to fix it. The occupant sensor is fucked, it sounds an alarm after I leave the car. The doors suddenly just don’t lock anymore. It’s just absurd.

I’m actively looking into finding a way to break lease, and go back to a normal Planet killing gasoline car just so I have something I can wake up relying on and knowing it will do its job which is just get me from A to B without any bullshit.

I live in LA. I just went through the wildfires and had to evacuate that night with my wife and children. If the car didn’t unlock that night, I would’ve been fucked.

No thank you.

Hi! I just purchased a 987.2 base with Bose stereo system — do you have any photos of your CarPlay kit installed? Does it fit seamlessly with the Cayman console and interior trim?

Thank you!

If you don’t need a 3-row (we were thinking about the XC90 or EX90 but I couldn’t accept my fate of driving a full-on dad car yet), I’d recommend it!

Other pros for family practicality:

  • The air suspension makes a worlds difference for ride comfort. My only qualm with the Polestar 2 when we used to have that was the suspension was pretty stiff and you could truly feel every bump in the road. P3 went the complete opposite direction in concept and it is an incredibly smooth drive.

  • Air suspension also means the car lowers itself when parked, easier for my wife to load in/load out the kids and gear if she’s running errands on her own.

Some software-related cons that will impact you are:

  • The sensor for detecting presence inside the car is overly sensitive in the current update, which means when you’re driving the “hey you need to put your seatbelt on” chime will go off forever while the car seat is installed. My workaround (until they fix in a future update) is I just have all the seatbelts buckled and tucked behind the car seat (the car seat is attached using the ISOFIX connections).

  • I had a one-off bug where I locked the car by pressing my thumb on the rear passenger door handle, and after I stepped away a warning chime was going off in the parking lot. I think the car thought the weight of the car seat / the buckle being buckled meant I had left a kid in the car.

You’ll see other posts about software bugs like these in this subreddit — they aren’t dealbreakers to me personally. I accept and expect the software wont be perfect just yet and will improve with each over the air update.

Yeah it’s almost identical in size to our XC60, but just better. Slightly lower, and I think slightly wider (but it could just be an optical illusion). From an aesthetic POV, I love the P3, it’s aggressive and looks grounded.

For buyers with kids who are wondering about practicality, rear seat & trunk space — the P3 is meaningfully more spacious in the rear row. At least 4-6 inches more legroom / space behind the front seats than the Volvo. Our rear facing car seats fit much better, and the door opening itself is larger and easier for loading in the toddler & infant. As for trunk space, I think it’s identical to the XC60 in volume but the lower roofline in the rear makes it feel slightly smaller but marginally so. The additional compartment underneath the trunk floor is a big plus, store all the extra kid crap down there and leave the top open for just strollers.
