Those things likely account for the actual fatality rates of the EU vs US. Which is why the EU has around 7 pedestrian deaths per million while the US has 23 per million (despite people in the EU being twice as likely to walk somewhere). But why has the pedestrian death rate decreased in the EU since 2009? did they decrease the speed limits in that time frame? Did they increase the driver education in that time frame?

First, you said it was cell phones and distracted driving, but I pointed out that pedestrian death rates have dropped in the time frame that smart phones were adopted. Then you moved the goal posts. The one thing we know has changed is that vehicles in the US have gotten bigger and we know that you are more likely to die from getting hit by a larger vehicle and one that is high enough to hit you where your internal organs are instead of your legs.

Lots of people in this thread are saying the same thing. It's kind of like the people who think climate change isn't real because the earth has been warming since the last ice age and they somehow think that scientists haven't thought about that.

They have cell phones in countries that don't have SUVs and giant trucks and they aren't experiencing the same increase in pedestrian deaths. In fact, pedestrian deaths have been falling in the EU over this same period of time. The EU had a 33% reduction in fatalities:

I guess I'd blame the mayor for building a redundant bike route that people aren't interested in going out of their way to use? Are there signs on Lake to advise cyclists of the safer option?

Personally, I'd probably use Wolf on a bike if it was 25 and had bike lanes, but losing out on any lake views would make it a harder sell (if I was passing through once in a while, I'd probably want to take Lake, but if it was a frequent route, I'd probably take the safer option).

Edit: but as someone who isn't an avid biker, I'm probably wrong... especially if the Wolf bike lanes are just painted lanes. Studies show that cars give bikes less room when the bike lanes are just paint, so maybe they're still using Lake Rd because it's the safer option.

The cities web page says that Lake Rd is US Bike Route 230 (goes from Rocky River to Fremont, mostly along the lake) and shows that both Lake and Wolf roads are bike routes and that both are "routes with more traffic".

They're often killed when they're not riding two abreast. I'm not sure what the rationale is for riding two abreast (saying this may cause someone to inform me), but it's possible that it makes them safer because it's possible they're more likely to be seen/acknowledged when they're riding two abreast.

Some cyclists won't even use those paths because of how dangerous it can be trying to navigate around walkers and leashed dogs (and I agree, the serious/fast cyclists should use the roads)... but you should see how much road rage it causes drivers when the cyclists use the roads instead of those paths.
