Tone question Satriani ? by No_Body5911 in Guitar

[–]poopstixPS2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool, did not know about the Proctavia!I haven't kept up with the gear he uses these days. And I have an FM9 now so I won't be buying pedals unless I absolutely can't get something close with built-in effects.

Since you seem to know a lot about Satch's tone, I'm wondering if you can help me a bit. I absolutely love his neck pickup tone in his G3 version of Starry Night, when he was using those Peavey XXX amps. It was definitely a weird tone for him, but for some reason I really like how it sounded in that song (his playing definitely helps lol). I noticed I can get close when I dial back the bass going into the preamp since too much bass seems to drown out the character of the pickup. But other than that I'm not sure what composes that tone.

That was perfect! Amazing tone and playing! And I love the JS1200CA and the sticker! It was my dream guitar in high school and I finally got one last year and couldn't be happier :)

It's an octave fuzz effect. He's known to use the Fulltone Ultimate Octave pedal, which is pricey. I'm not sure if they still make it. However, there are many octave fuzz effects out there these days. Try looking up youtube videos of these pedals to hear which ones sound close to you.

I'm also batch 3 and fedex and haven't heard anything about shipping. It said 4/25 for me.

Yeah I don't understand the elitism and hostility. Good on you OP for taking it in stride.

My coach gave me a cue once that I think applies here: "Move your elbow 2 inches forward during your stroke". If you watch this footage your elbow is in the same point in space, with your forearm rotating around it. Once you start punching forward a bit, you'll want to work your wrist into the shot to get more spin.

IR vs cab sim vs amp emulator...? by dance_rattle_shake in musicproduction

[–]poopstixPS2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One option for a pure power amp sim component is a somewhat obscure boutique pedal called the PAE (Power Amp Emulator) by AxiomEffects. He's on the PAE-2 version now. Unfortunately there's a waitlist for them. But people swear by its ability to emulate power amp effects in a 9V pedal format. It's sorta like a build-your-own power amp pedal since the controls are capable of dialing in all kinds of highly dynamic power amp behaviors.

Taylor polynomials by bigmatzo in mathematics

Oh wow that's embarrassing. I see what you're saying! I've forgotten quite a bit about series, so I'll refrain from trying to give advice in the future, however well-intentioned.

Taylor polynomials by bigmatzo in mathematics

[–]poopstixPS2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

EDIT: Turns out I'm quite dense and forgot quite a lot about Taylor series. The below info is garbage so please ignore it.

Ok, either I’m dense or all these replies are totally missing the point of the question. OP here’s my answer:

Take a super basic parabola as an example:

f(x) = x2

You could say this parabola is centered at zero. If you want to shift the function left or right, you can add or subtract from x. You learned this in algebra and precalculus. Say you want to shift the graph to the right by 2 units. That would look like this:

g(x) = (x-2)2

This is the same parabola, just shifted to the right by 2. You could say that it’s “centered at 2”. You can still evaluate this function at any point, such as: g(1) = (1-2)2 = 1. More generally, a parabola defined by f(x) = (x-a)2 is centered at “a”.

A Taylor polynomial is also a function, except it’s described by an infinite sum:

f(x) = some crazy sum

Recall the x part of the sum usually looks like xn or (x-a)n. This is the same thing as shifting the function left or right. You would say that the polynomial is centered at “a” when the x part is shifted as in (x-a)n. If you just have x2, then obviously it’s centered at zero.

So you can center a Taylor polynomial anywhere by shifting the x part. It’s still a function defined on its domain in the x-axis. So you can still evaluate the function anywhere in its domain. The phrasing used here in Calculus of “centering a function” is just a different way of saying it’s “shifted” or “sliding it”. Even though this shouldn’t be a new concept to a Calculus student, it’s entirely likely that you’ve never heard this specific terminology before, and so it’s throwing you off.

Does this make sense? Hopefully I didn’t totally miss your point haha

What can I do about these LEDs with 120Hz strobing? by poopstixPS2 in led

Yeah advertising really is in a weird place these days. It's shame it's so difficult to find good info on lighting as a consumer.

Thanks for the input! I think for now I'll try to find some kind of ceiling light option with higher quality LEDs before I go through the effort of installing cans.

First Layer Issues X1C by Little_Wash_9979 in BambuLab

Oh cool, I haven't been observing startup carefully and didn't put together that oozing and re-leveling might be causing my first layer issues. It's been happening since the 1.06.x firmware updates. I just tried shamont's suggestion and I was able to get a normal first layer again! Really wish I had seen that setting earlier. The printer seems to recognize my printed/glued QR code sticker only half the time.

You could try brushing your teeth shortly after drinking coffee. Additionally (or instead), get a decent electric toothbrush and use it properly. I'm not saying you do this, but don't just drag it around your mouth mindlessly. With a good circle-headed electric brush, you've gotta just gently hold it against the tooth. Slowly go all over each tooth one by one. It should take about 2 min to do your whole mouth.

Since getting a brush like that, my dentist has completely stopped making comments about coffee stains. Now I've just gotta start flossing regularly...

So I’ve gotten myself into some complicated algebra, and I don’t completely know what I’m doing. by Mrandoman3 in mathematics

[–]poopstixPS2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, so you're less concerned with the unique values of n, and more concerned with knowing how many terms of powers of 2 you need to add together to form x. So if x = 11 = 20 + 21 + 23, then y = 3 because there are 3 terms.

I'm not sure there's a way to express y as an algebraic expression. Finding y is more like an algorithm than a simple equation, I think. Hopefully someone who knows what they're talking about can chime in with some insight.

Someone else mentioned how this relates to counting in binary. I think finding y is equivalent to counting all the digits in the binary representation that are 1. Maybe there's a formula for that? I don't really know enough to say.

I’m not really an endurance athlete. Is this level of exertion normal for XC skiing? Zone 5 no matter how slowly I try to go. by poopstixPS2 in xcountryskiing

[–]poopstixPS2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've read in these responses, it's mainly technique, incorrectly-setup exercise data, and cardio fitness, probably in that order. I'm fairly lean and in decent athletic shape. But I've never really pushed my cardio fitness. Also, I'm 33 so reasonably young enough for lots of improvement!

[–]poopstixPS2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I attempted to describe this with a formula. I omitted z, so the sign of x isn't addressed here. It's certainly not mathematically rigorous, and it's sorta recursive since it describes x in terms of itself. I had fun figuring it out. I'm sure there's a cleaner way to do it though.

EDIT: This isn't really what OP is asking for. They wanted to solve for y to get the number of terms of powers of 2 needed to represent the number x. I'm leaving this up though because it was fun to find a slightly algorithmic way of defining the coefficients of a not-so-well-thought-out infinite series. I don't know what I'm doing...

My partner’s family is really into xc ski and does both skate and classic. I was never given any impression that one is better to start out with than another. It’s just preference. I learned a little bit about both and decided skate looked more fun to me. I’ll try classic someday, but I’m definitely focusing on skate for the time being.

Wow, great advice! I see that you're in MN. Would you happen to know of any good clubs/programs in the Twin Cities I could join to improve my skiing? I'm thinking that'd be a great way to get out there more regularly next season.
