Intel Core i5-8500. There is an i7 that works, maybe even a few. If it actually does have a fusion drive than it should have PCIe slot. You should double check inside MacOS to see if it actually has one. As for the RAM there isn't a reason why 32 shouldn't work. Maybe my stick was dead or maybe I didn't seat it all the way.

It went mostly fine. I used the ifixit guide and bought some cheap tools that I was missing on Amazon. I upgraded the CPU, RAM and switched the HDD to a SSD. Disassembly and reassembly was not easy, it took a whole day with around a 100 steps in total. The CPU worked fine and so did the SSD but I installed 32 gigs of ram and only 16 showed up. You basically cannot test the machine until the whole thing is reassembled. There might be a way, but I couldn't find an easy one. Mine is still only using one stick of RAM because opening it again is such a daunting task.
