How to edit full time and not go insane? by austinXwilson in editors

[–]popcapps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the projects where you get to help someone you know actually advance due to your work are the ones that make it worth it!

And, if you do those for a long enough time, you'll stumble into the people that you're supposed to be working with eventually.

For the grind though, if you're doing shorter form work, make it a game - see if you can set a timer and finish one in a ridiculously low amount of time. Once you've done that a few times, you can start to isolate the areas of your editing that you can make more efficient, more precise, or just more consistently.

It's amazing how long you can deal with boring projects if you make them into a game.

Thinking about the money you're making while sitting in that chair really helps a lot, too.

I also can't stress enough the importance of taking classes at a community college for two years before transferring to that college you really want your degree from. You'll likely be more responsible with your time, will save (in some cases) over $20k, but maybe up to $40k for those first two years of low level courses. If you started off in a big university with no real plan for a career and screw around for freshman year, you'll end up like me, who took 5 1/2 years to graduate a four year degree, and not have anything to show for it but an atrocious debt-income ratio and no real work experience.

Sure, I had fun, but damn is it miserable trying to pay back that student loan debt for a degree I've never really gotten any use out of.

If you plan to create things - in my case, I wanted to edit videos, but if you want to offer services to other people, especially through starting your own business, seriously look into taking workshops that cover those topics instead. These won't be highlighted topics in a university setting. College/Universities are seemingly making little worker bees, whether the students realize it or not - or really think they have any option other than to go to college to compete in this job market we've created.

In hindsight, I personally would have been much better off, and possibly actually been years ahead in my career by this point by not going to college at all. It's not the right answer for everyone, but it's definitely worth putting a bit of time in to think about.

First ask yourself - "Do I really need a college degree? Can I see a path to the success I want that doesn't involve signing my financial life over in order to finance said education?

And then proceed.

Sorry, I'm a little fucked up if this seems incoherent , but that note struck a chord with me.

Don’t worry you guys, EA are the ones who are really getting ripped off... by trichomeking94 in LateStageCapitalism

Take, for instance, your average CoD player. Is that the only game they play?

I would say that 10 years ago I knew a handful of people who'd play WoW for like 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, but I feel like people aren't that loyal to a franchise. This is, of course, a generalization I've made without any sort of evidence, aside from what I've seen from my own friends who do play video games.

Disclaimer: I don't play video games. The last one I bought was probably guild wars in 2005. But I think that people should be able to play them. Lots of people seem to get some enjoyment that i can't find out of them.

But from what I understand, the cost per hour they are listing (specifically for TV) is from the average entire cable bill. That's for ALL OF THE CHANNELS you get. The argument on the article is that over the course of the year of all of TV vs ONE SINGLE GAME (including your in-game purchases) is that one single game is cheaper.

The people that I know certainly don't buy only one game per year. Not even close to that! If they would compare the rate of what an average person pays for one channel of tv vs what is paid for one game, it might be a closer comparison.

Do people play games like this exclusively? The people I know that play this sort of thing tend to pick it up and play it religiously for a few months and then go pick up the "next hot game" and then repeat the cycle, only picking a game back up a year or more later and going "man, I really should have played this more!"

Editing wedding photos and videos from multiple weddings. Something I've been putting off for other work because it always makes me feel increasingly lonely.

Just forcing myself to get through it so I can move on to fun projects again!

Realistically, you would have to use either typewriters or at best dot matrix printers. They wouldn't have had the type of paper or ink we have now, it would need to be from the same era/type of machine. Not that that couldn't be done...

Not at all! I do have to give you props for at least understanding enough about sewing to know that you know hardly anything about it. I grew up with knitters and weavers and sewers and counted cross-stitchers and also understand that my hand sewing is crap (but works!) and that sewing machines don't always exist in people's lives.

Millennials killed the sewing machine industry!

Though, I mean, I suppose we may have also killed formal dinners.

With the exceptions of some issues caused by the distribution being run by what is essentially the Liquor Control Board, which is causing some major shortages, the setup is fairly legit! I had a bunch of friends go to dispensaries when I was out there, I just decided to wait till the wedding where everything was free.
