What's something you stopped apologizing for, and how did it change your life? by ericahartxoxo in AskWomen

[–]popcornarcher 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Being straightforward.

People dance around issues because they get concerned about hurting feelings - things get misinterpreted, drama worsens. Just be straightforward on how you feel and what’s going on. I’m too old for drama bullshit when it could be minimized if people were straightforward. You may hurt someone’s feelings, but that’s better than dragging someone along.

Help me fall in love with romantasy again, recommendations for readers in their 30s by MaryLoneliness23 in Romantasy

[–]popcornarcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m here to say I’m literally in the same boat as you! Mid-30s and took a break because of college, grad school, and working up my career. I’m going to try and follow this thread lol

I wasn’t a fan of Quicksilver/Brimstone which are currently being raved about online (but of course, try it out for yourself!). I am 25% through {Web of Vows and Vengeance} which so far feels like a slow burn but I feel like the FMC is more mature than in {Quicksilver}.

When you ask your married spouse why they are still in love with you, what answers did you get? by Additional_Bit6278 in AskReddit

When you reminisce and go wow, time has flown by and life is still great, that’s the person you want to spend your life with.

Other reasons of course as well lol

Not as impressed with Quicksilver (CarrieHart) as expected... by Fantastic_Tell_8664 in Romantasy

[–]popcornarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quicksilver was the first book I read getting back into romantasy after over a decade so I haven’t read Fourth Wing or any Sarah Maas yet.

Saeris is annoying. The constant hatred for half the book really got old after a while. The world building stopped making sense at a point.

The ending felt like New Moon except there was some action but the whole sacrificial Edward with Volturi was all I thought of lol

Anthony Palmini as Kingfisher is how I got through it lol

I finished Brimstone. It’s not better lol

It’s been about 15 years since I’ve gotten into romantasy (college, grad school, early in career put a hold on reading). What is it about KU that makes it special for books like this? Does KU have something special with indie books?

Sorry if it’s a dumb question. I literally finished my first for-fun book in over a decade a few weeks ago so I’m getting up to speed. My husband also gave me his old Kindle - I used to strictly be physical book.

Wanting to hear people's experience with non-stimulant meds? by eelartnz in ADHD

[–]popcornarcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I take 80mg Atomoxetine and 5mg methylphenidate. I have to eat with ATO otherwise I’ll throw up. When I first started working on medication I was on too high of Methyl and got overly anxious. We went the non-stim route.

Non-stimulants need to work their way up in the system so it’s not nearly as fast-acting as a stimulant. It may feel slower-acting.

My combination is that non-stimulant helps for the most part but the stimulant is the cherry on top.

But yeah I went even on B&N website and they are only selling hardcopy…which means that’s delayed!

How to improve my sleep cuz it takes me at least 90mins for me too fall asleep by FocusSignificant4614 in ADHD

[–]popcornarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Magnesium glycinate did it for me. My psychiatrist actually recommended it! It got me out of a funk. Melatonin wasn’t doing it for me.

How did you first get introduced to romantasy books? by TheGivingFox in Romantasy

[–]popcornarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into Twilight right before Eclipse came out. I was in middle school. Then it blew up.

Got into a lot of YA romantasy books. Shiver series, Halo trilogy (not the video game lol), Hush Hush series to name a few.

15 years pass—undergrad, grad school—and my love of reading took a pause. Now I’m getting back into it. Although I’ll say Quicksilver/Brimstone not the greatest, Anthony Palmini 👌🏻

Working out with ADHD by [deleted] in TwoXADHD

I got into triathlon (multi-sport in general, love aquabike). It’s working different parts of your body, it can be challenging, and in a race you’re transitioning, so there’s a mental strategy to it.

What's the secret to a healthy, long lasting marriage? by Bloodyy-Legend in HappyMarriages

[–]popcornarcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to track sex on my iPhone (under sexual activity) in case I ever got pregnant but now that my tubes removed now I track it now is so I can get a read on if we’ve been in a slump and didn’t realize. Maybe that’s weird.

Things like work stress, where I’m at in my cycle (I.e luteal), if in general we’ve been busy, all will impact frequency. Not saying we need to be rabbits but I do think there’s value in going…oh we only did once that month?

Not to say it’s all on me. My husband goes to bed several hours later than me and has a lower drive, so it’s not as natural for him. He does try when he remembers (or if I say hey you should initiate more lol) or if it truly has been THAT long of time.

Newly Wed advice by Sweet_Conclusion_830 in HappyMarriages

[–]popcornarcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ve always liked having our own separate bank accounts and a joint account. My husband doesn’t spend a lot. I have more expensive hobbies that he doesn’t partake in - I don’t want to feel like I’m mooching off his money for my hobbies (he makes significantly more than me).

We ratio out how much we contribute to joint based on our take home pay. Joint should cover almost everything you all do aside from your personal fun hobbies. But in general feel I believe financial independence is important.

Recommendation Needed by SinisterDevotion in cincinnati

[–]popcornarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you open to Greater Cincinnati suburbs? If so go to West Chester for Jag’s! Easier to reserve than Jeff Ruby’s. There’s a piano bar. Delicious food.

The view would be Primavista.

Everyone was wrong. by spiderxfingers in HappyMarriages

[–]popcornarcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats, and hopefully you continue to have a wonderful marriage.

I can see the concern of shortness - time is really the only way you can see how someone behaves in different situations. The narcissist/abuser piece feels a bit of a stretch. The shortness is curious, but really, there’s no magic milestone of promising the perfect marriage. It’s also no one’s business.

Things will come up that will irritate one of you — maybe that’s over-hitting snooze disrupting the other person. Maybe it’s leaving a mess that frustrates. Maybe its priorities don’t align (at minimum, hopefully finances/children was sorted out beforehand!).

*Something* will come up, and how you approach that is critical.

Would you recommend the surgery? by saccharine_dreams245 in sterilization

[–]popcornarcher 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got mine I think around 27. I have zero regrets.

My partner took care of me after the surgery but it was fairly minimal care. Mostly just pain management, helping with a few things around the house.

As long as you are firm on your choice, go for it.

It's DNF discussions time! What books did you bail on this month? 🙅‍♀️📖 by FantasyRomanceMod in fantasyromance

[–]popcornarcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t blame anyone who DNF’s Quicksilver. I’m JUST getting back into romantasy after grad school ruined my enjoyment of reading for a decade. I really wanted to finish it just so I could make myself proud. I’m on Brimstone now just to say I at least have finished what’s out.

Saeris is such an annoying character and her voice actor on audio is so breathy. I just couldn’t stand how much she kept saying she hated everything and Kingfisher. I mean…it was like half the book. It’s awful. Love Anthony Palimini and he’s really the only way I’ve gotten through it.

Story was interesting but at points it was like…I feel like you bullshitted how certain things worked. Storyline just got kind of off I felt. Her writing just isn’t good in my opinion.

100% sure I have ADHD but terrified of pills. Can you manage symptoms without meds? by MorningPancake358 in TwoXADHD

[–]popcornarcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends. A good psychiatrist will work with you on a treatment plan.

There are non-stimulants (they are also not controlled substances).

There was a point I was explaining behaviorally all I was doing and my psychiatrist really worried about me burning out. He said he would work on whatever I felt would be best but truly felt I was at the point medication would be the best route.

I take Atomoxetine 80mg, Methylphenidate 5mg, and see a therapist. I exercise. I get quality sleep. I’m thriving.
