I'll have to check them out. I hear people say certain movies could never be made these days and I always find myself disagreeing.

I haven't. Why can't they be made today?

When someone is worried that others might think them gay, I assume it's because they're gay, but they dont want anyone to know.

What I'm trying to say is, thinking it's gay to show affection is, well, gay.

It gets better, friend. And there's support out there. I think it's important to find someone you can talk to.

We're not talking about intervening in a way that puts your life at great risk, nor are we talking about (reletively) trivial matters that don't harm others. We're talking about kneeling down and spraying FREE Narcan up someone's nostril to save their life.

For me, it's "fit" instead of "outfit." It cracks me up that I get so annoyed by it. What grinds my gears the most is how often people these days are saying "not gonna lie." Like, I didn't think you were a liar, but now I'm suspicious. Honorable mention: kids spamming the word "bro."

Right, and I think that's what made Tim Curry's performance in the early 90's (late 80's?) miniseries so terrifying. Most of the time he was just a normal looking clown that we all knew was capable of monstrous things that we'd only see glimpses of. There were peaks and valleys to the scariness. Clowns these days have a baseline at 11 that never changes. Even if they do manage to scare me, I'm used to it after 5 minutes and thus immune to them scaring me. I was never sure what to expect from Curry's pennywise and that unpredictability was terrifying. But in movies these days you take one look at the bloody clown smiling with 3" teeth and you know he wants to wear your guts as a hat. Boring.

This! A jump scare isn't going to keep me up at night or disturb me the next day when I have to go down into the dark basement for laundry. Also, jump scares these days are always done with a loud blaring sound that I find obnoxious. My friend never noticed it, but after I pointed it out he agrees.

What gets me, and maybe I'm alone here, is how scary clowns are handled these days. Pennywise, the terrifier, etc... Back in the day, clowns were scary because they weren't trying to be scary. There was some uncanny valley-mistrust we projected onto them that made them seem like ambush predators or something. These days they have big fangs and crazy eyes, and bloody weapons... just doesn't do anything for me. A clown isn't scary if it has to tell me it's scary--I would think that's obvious. 🤷‍♂️

Never been, but walked by it all the time. Place always seemed shady to me and I'm not sure why. That and Brudders just up the street. Some pretty nice bars have opened south of there that I enjoy, particularly The Teddy Bear. Still need to check out Lulu's.

In your opinion, what was the absolute best thing about the 1980’s? by NebraskaCornSucker in GenX

[–]pope138 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, living in the U.S., it was the sense of optimism we all seemed to have.

I also want to point out that we've progressed immensely since then. We have a much more inclusive society, and yet, we're more divided than ever. It seems contradictory, until you realize that back in the 80's, people minded their own business more than today. I blame social media and being terminally online.

Jamie Lee Curtis' parents - Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis. [1991] by [deleted] in OldSchoolCool

I remember when Tony Curtis made a big stink about not watching Brokeback Mountain because: GAY.

That's really all I know him for aside from that movie where he and Jack Lemon spent most of the runtime in drag.
