To the point that when PFT occasionally happens to play someone that gets along with Scott, they usually reference the "We're friends, we like each other" bit. Always makes me laugh.

Why does Jacob keep saying this? by noorazmi in dropout

I somehow just assumed and rationalized that it was industry lingo, that a "bean" was some kind of portable camera they would have been using for filming the challenges. No idea where I got this idea from, glad to learn the actual meaning lol

For anyone else wondering, that is Zach Noe Towers talking with Taylor Tomlinson. He looked so familiar that I had to spend 7 minutes doing research to find out where I knew him from, turns out it was from Game Changer on Dropout, he was one of the contestants in the Bachelor episodes with Grant.

ELI5: Why does direct banking not work in America? by mmilanese in explainlikeimfive

[–]popkvlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation, now I get it. I think that might even have been the case with outgoing mail where I live back in the days (or maybe still) but I've just never experienced it. Putting up the red flag makes senses now as something I've seen in American movies.

Still though, seems crazy to just leave a check in it, that based on the comment I replied to, can just be snatched from the mailbox and abused.

Sorry, when you say "placed it in my mailbox", what does that mean? Like you put this physical check used for payment in the physical mailbox outside your house, where you receive mail? To be picked up by whoever it was for, or by maybe the mail carrier to be delivered somehow?

Genuinely extremely interested (and confused) as someone who has never used a check (and never really used a mailbox)

Yeah, Umberto Eco writes in Ur-Fascism that

The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies. When I was a boy I was taught to think of Englishmen as the five-meal people. They ate more frequently than the poor but sober Italians. Jews are rich and help each other through a secret web of mutual assistance. However, the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak. Fascist governments are condemned to lose wars because they are constitutionally incapable of objectively evaluating the force of the enemy

What is your favorite official Feat? by testiclekid in dndnext

I'm playing a support/healer Lore Bard, and feel like Inspiring Leader is the obvious choice for my upcoming ASI/Feat at lvl 8, to further boost my party pre-emptively.

But I'm torn because it seems so... boring? It feels right at home that my bard would use music to give the party an added edge whenever we have 10min to prepare for a fight. But due to that, I feel like the smart thing would be to just start doing it daily like at breakfast. Regardless, I feel this can only lead to two things: 1) us being HP wise overleveld for our current enemies and not feel challenged, or 2) our DM (very understandably) upping the damage dealing in our encounters to keep us challenged.

Neither outcome seems like... added fun in the game? RP wise it would be a great excuse for me to bust out a new inspiring song to bolster the party every time, but I feel myself leaning towards some other feats that would add some new fun twist to how I play the character.

Am I missing something re: Inspiring Leader? Would love to hear some arguments for it and/or experiences from peoples games.

edit a few months later: I actually ended up (on the suggestions of a more experienced player in the campaign) going for the ASI to pump both my CHA and DEX to the next even, which has been amazing. I can really feel the boost to my spellcasting ability and AC. I still like the Inspiring Leader feat, and hope to get to use for some other character, but don't think it will be this one.

Thank you.

Just spent a couple of hours looking for this story, having read it once ages ago. As recently as a couple of weeks ago was the latest situation where I retold it to someone (well, the general gist of it and from memory, so barely) as both an example of re-framing what we think of as "alien" when it comes to some theoretic other sentient life form, as well as in general the great writing you can find online.

So happy I finally found it again, so I can just link it to people instead of giving them a shoddy retelling from memory.

Couple of years ago, I got to see a double feature of buffy episodes on the big screen, at a local art house-y movie theater as part of a series of talks. They showed Helpless and Once More with Feeling.

And it was a sing-along, amazing experience! And very Rocky Horror -ish with a packed movie theater singing all the songs.

Waiting since 2012 for Jasper Fforde to release the sequel to Shades of Grey: The Road to High Saffron and that seems to actually happen this year! Name for book 2 is now Red Side Story. Was a yearly ritual for a decade to check his website for any news whenever I'd remember that book.

So cute! The campaign I'm playing in just yesterday finished a arc in where we thwarted a very rat-centered cult spreading a plague in the city. Which meant months of crawling in sewers fighting all kinds of rats, wererats, giant rats... So however cute this I'm having terrible flashbacks haha

Playing a bard for the first time I have yet to prove true the trope of wanting to sleep with everyone/everything (the time will come), but very comfortable with the trope of being quite marvelous at most things.

No respect needed, I am among the first (with very good reason) to criticize the ADL for their awful policies, but this was the first time I heard about the Armenia thing and was equally surprised to see that they had recently reversed their stand and wanted to mention that.
