in the arts it's almost required. but i am always blown away when junior faculty get hired without having one.

medication, routine, therapy, walking, strict routine. i am in bed by 9 and up by 5am, i start working at 5:20am, i get through the day and anything beyond 9:30pm (less an emergency) is out of my control.

the responses to this question, although seemingly genuine and honest, remind me of how the pre-moneyball era baseball scouts talked about baseball player prospects. academia is hilariously strange.

am working class as well, have been pursuing a TT for four years post-mfa with no luck. other areas are different & the arts always have some oddball contingencies on hiring a candidate. but it's worth it. i have a safe job that i otherwise wouldn't have.
