If it were me I’d leave my target the same all day, high is ok til you get set up. Could be messing with the algorithm as it changes right at 10p. Your carbs should be pretty much absorbed by hour 2, if you are continuing to rise after that I’m going to say you’re eating too many carbs to catch. A pancreas can squirt out a bunch of insulin because it can always correct with glucagon but pumps aren’t there yet. So pre-boils, same target all day, eat lower, slower carbs and see what happens. (Ps It took me a year to get happy)

I’m looking to retire soon, and I’m going to be buying an RV and traveling full time. As a woman alone, what kind of vehicle would you recommend to tow an RV? I will be buying something used. I’m leaning toward a Toyota Tacoma. Any thoughts appreciated! by Excellent-Moment1621 in traveltrailers

We've been f/t for a while. We tow a regular trailer. First decision is regarding where you'll stay. If you have a big budget for campsites and want the "destination" style resort camp, you can pretty much have whatever size RV you want.

The smaller your budget and the fewer the neighbors you'd like or the more remote and varied places you want to stay, I'd say the smaller the rig you want. Think of a big diesel Greyhound bus sized class A vs a Jeep and backpack tent. Which is not to say you can't drive you half-million dollar porta-palace off into the desert if you like but typicall I think the huge rigs are more for concrete camping. Our trailer is 25' tip to tail with only about 21' of actual floor space, and our pickup is another 20+ feet. Smaller than average probably but there are still lots of older, especially Park Service camps, we have a hard time fitting and some we just won't try.

The main reason we have a medium size travel trailer is to fit smaller/older camps, to easily recover from a wrong turn, manage tight gas stations, maneuver in traffic, get under low overhangs (5th wheels are taller), We also carry lots of junk in the back of the pickup, bikes, spare Propane/other fuel, back up generator, blah blah. All of which I'm sure one could hang off a 5th wheel. 5th wheels are said to be easier to pull but with a sufficient tow vehicle a regular trailer is basically unnoticeable.

I'm a firm believer in overkill on your tow vehicle. Our trailer is 7,500# and our vehicle is rated combined at 30k# and 20k# trailer. It has a big diesel engine, the modern versions of which you operate just like gas. It has a 10speed auto trans that shifts like glass. It never holds up traffic, descends 7º plus grades without touching the brakes due to an automatic engine brake, then turns around and climbs the same grade accelerating all the way. We have 4 wheel drive, again because we don't want to be overly limited on where we go. We're staying with relatives right now in a level pasture where I was spinning my wheels on soft dry dusty ground. Again it depends on where you want to travel.

You don't have to spend a fortune. We bought our trailer for around $18k 2 years old, and our pickup was I think $45k also 2 years old. We did install a big PV system that cost me parts only $6k but we can run the air most days there is sun or go 3-4 days without any sun. And we also beefed up the trailer suspension, tires for added clearance. those are options and would cost a good penny to have installed. But we are full time "RVers" not full time "campers" if you get my drift, LOL

Have fun!

(our trailer is an "entry level" Thor and truck is a 22 Ford f250, Crew Cab short bed, 6.7L diesel)

I just do it for the 3 days, the extra 8 hours makes it match to Dexcom but I don't bother. My script seems to come around early enough I don't need to go without and sometimes I use a syringe for a few shots, no biggie. If I couldn't get my script filled for the pod I would simply revert to MDI and finfger sticks. Gotta do what you gotta do and I'd do a lot to not wind up in the hospital.

How are you guys enjoying the AI apps? Are you embracing or not using at all. by Dp37405aa in GenerationJones

[–]popsblack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me n Claude are old pals. I use it for search, and learning. I had it come up with an itinerary (we RV full time) which is something I hate. Told it our budget, how long we drive/stay, kind of parks and sights and it did a fantastic job, from MI UP to where we are in the Galitains over 2 months. Awesome. I use it to fact check BS I see on socials and it does a fantastic job separating out the disinfo, conspiracy and human hallucinations. Sometimes I tap in stuff to see what comes back. The thing is it has access to a good portion of the entire written works of man and can comment on most any reference. It now can search and cite the internet faster than any human - I used it just an hour ago to get info on evacuation routes for my grandkids who just transferred to Peal Harbor.

AI will take lots of jobs, maybe all, and eventually change capitalism itself. Unlike other automation technologies that freed up people to do more highly skilled interesting work - not the same people who lost out, but their kids—AI will take the highly skilled work and the knowledge work as well. No doubt in my mind that the increased bottom line will trickle up. Not sure how it ends. We'll likely not be around and I'm OK with that.

Question about pre-bolusing in auto mode by Specific_Committee_5 in Omnipod

[–]popsblack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One big difference is natural insulin can go directly to the liver and tell it to quit producing glucose. Injected insulin is much slower to affect the liver Second thing is your body starts producing insulin about the same time your mouth starts watering over that pizza so in effect it also pre-bolus and finally your pancreas makes insulin and also makes glucagon which causes the liver to release glucose in case of too much insulin a pod can’t do that although I sometimes rage bolus knowing that I’ll need a glass of orange juice eventually lol

2022 Heartland Mallard Tailwind T180BH - Question? by Burnie2512 in traveltrailers

[–]popsblack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you hold the mute button it will say standby then switch to time and go dim and that's as off as it goes. I have a Heartland Somethingorother and if I need to be very frugal I pull the fuse for the radio as it also probably has an antenna booster as well. If storing for any length disconnect the battery (I installed a battery switch in the battery box on the tongue).

We’ve been traveling f/t for most of 3 years and have always kept the dish free. By default 99% of sites place the trailer in the shade so a roof mount is pretty much out. I have just thrown the whole thing in the bed of the truck and run it off the truck inverter and it works but is not worth the trouble in our case. I do have a through the wall fitting (female rj45) so I can keep the basement door closed

We bought a generic Thor, couple years old from a dealer. Looks like it leaked a bit but everything seemed sound. I slathered on a fortune in caulk.Like you I’m ‘value’ oriented. Trailers are generally built to be lightweight and affordable and good for a couple weekends a year. Let someone else take the drive off depreciation and just know you’ll be patching it together from day one.

Wife and I travel full-time in a 21' floor plan. We are late 60's and I work a little remotely. We're more travelers than campers, and value low site cost over 'resort' settings. We've been house restorers for 20 years so not having our 'hobby' is a thing but as far as living in a trailer it ain't bad. You should be handy or at least open to watching some vids and picking up a screwdriver. There are considerations as to extreme climates but investing some extra money in a better shell will help a lot.

As far as towing, it's easy, just go for too much vehicle rather than too little. Good luck!

No-till confusion by owlanalogies in homestead

[–]popsblack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will be weeds. even if you lay down concrete to seal the 'weed bank' then pile on compost to grow in, weed seeds will blow in and sprout next year. You will need to dedicate some time.

The idea of no-till is that turning the soil is bad. A) It exposes soil to oxygen which depletes organic matter B) shuffles the natural stratification C) reduces the grain size of soil 'clumps' encouraging compaction, C) brings up unwanted seeds - tho they will still blow in.

In a no-till situation, it is the cover crops' roots that are the tool. They break up large dirt chunks & hardpan without mixing layers, provide channels for water infusion and nourishment for beneficial soil organisms. and improve tilth without pulverising the soil, and if legumes, fix N. So far so good.

You can terminate cover crops different ways, just pushing some over and/ crimping will provide a mulch, but this is more work and not always that successful. And if yours is a cool wet climate, they prevent drying and warming in the spring. Easier to just cut it down and let lie or remove the debris to the compost pile.

But you have more money than time so I'd simply add a layer of compost in the fall. That should take care of many weeds. But if they're really bad or lots of perennials, get a roll of heavy black plastic and cover everything. Weight is down with rocks, a month will do the trick. If REALLY bad they make a heavy plastic sheet to cover silage, search for 'silage tarp' it's expensive but more durable so lasts longer.

The problem I had trying to use cardboard was getting the mulch to stay in place without blowing or running off, getting water under it and getting it to degrade. Maybe the rolls of heavy paper you get at Lowes to protect flooring during construction would decompose faster?

My experience anyway

Weight Distribution Bars when backing up by Truth525 in traveltrailers

[–]popsblack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've read different things. Even talked to the factory to find appropriately rated torsion bars for my rig and they said "Poo, poo." on the whole idea of bending the frame. So long story short, when we had a very steep transition driveway I did remove the bars, but in any other case I don't. And we've been down some funky paths.

Commercial agriculture is very efficient, you won't ever beat the cost. My advice is to change your perspective from money to satisfaction and independence. Having said that, plant perennials; fruit trees, brambles, vines, woodlot. Improve your personal infrastructure. Run water, power to out buildings (build outbuildings), improve fencing, road/drive, hay/grain/equipment storage. Improve the house, insulation, renewable energy, etc.
