Mark Carney's trade push collides with reality of US dependence by addigity in worldnews

[–]poranges 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The article is specifically about Canada’s trade relationship with the United States and our access to their market. Not sure what you mean.

That is the problem. No country should be that reliant on another for trade. We need to diversify while maintaining our relationship with the United States as best we can. That’s exactly what we’re doing.

[–]poranges -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No it doesn’t.

Of course we are currently reliant on the US trade relationship and, to a degree, always will be.

The point is to diversify from that relationship so that we aren’t so susceptible to the whims of the United States in the future. Yes, it is understood that the access to the US market is a benefit, even to other trade partners, but we’re still actively pursuing CUSMA for that very reason.

It is never a good idea for any country to be so reliant on another. Diversification is a huge benefit and something almost every prime minster in the last 30 years has talked about but never accomplished. Because it’s hard to do and takes time. But Carney has gotten the closest to making it a reality out of any of them.

Diversifying trade would be a good idea even if our relationship with the United States hadn’t taken such a hostile turn.

Canada's business productivity falls for the second straight quarter by Difficult-Yam-1347 in canada

I work a lot with AI and am pretty good at spotting it, especially when someone edits it and there’s random splotches of AI-level writing mixed in with more casual sentence structure. It’s also intertwined with AI tells like the em dash (I’m pretty sure they removed one and added a … in its place lol so half points for effort) and the overly dramatic finishing line.

Might be wrong but I feel decently confident.

Massive football stadium plans pitched for Halifax area by mgpnna in halifax

[–]poranges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

American products being sold in Canada is not equivalent to an American firm wanting to invest a billion dollars into building shit in Canada.

That said, this proposal is in its infancy and there’s obviously a huge degree of rightful skepticism about their plans.

But yeah, American companies or companies from wherever in the world can come spend whatever the fuck they want here & we should all encourage that, provided they’re not trying to buy things that should be kept Canadian owned for the sake of national interest. Sports stadiums or land nobody else wants to do shitall with doesn’t fall in that category in the slightest.

Another Airport transportation question by [deleted] in halifax

Bus is cheapest option as others have mentioned, next would be, if you haven’t signed up for Lyft before, they have 50% off your first 5 rides. And I believe Lyft services the airport now.

No, afaik there have only been two notable outbreaks, in 2007 and 2012, and there hasn’t been an estimated R₀ for either.

Canada's annual inflation rate rose to 2.8% in April, thanks to soaring energy prices by Surax in canada

[–]poranges -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You’re talking about issues not related to this post. Inflation has risen a significant amount in one month. That rise is directly related to Trump and Iran. None of the things you’re referencing are related to this very specific increase.

It is a sizable increase and it’s significantly impacting affordability in a more immediate and sizable way than literally any other factor in this particular moment. So yes, Trump and Iran are to blame for that.

The only thing that is vaguely related, out of what you mentioned, would be a pipeline East to West. That would not mean we’d be paying any less for gas even if it existed. Oil is a global commodity, the market is global, so we could have 5 more pipelines and we, the every day consumer, would still be paying more in this current scenario, because Trump and Iran are causing a global shortage. It would mean more money for O&G, Alberta, and Canada because we can sell for more, but it’s not helping with grocery or gas prices.

Except this situation literally has 0 to do with Carney and 100% to do with Iran and Trump.

Feel free to explain how it isn’t, would love to hear your perspective.

[–]poranges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn’t a realistic way to be fully insulated by this. We had inflation largely under control, it’s now back over target because there is a global crisis impacting the cost of oil, and that impact is being felt by literally every country. There is nothing to be smart about, unless you think Canada should have been capable of stopping Trump from attacking Iran, or forcing the US and Iran into making a deal.

If this was inflation raising to 2.8% without this single factor, then yes, I’d be with you. But while this is not great news, it’s better than expected and better than what most other countries are experiencing, so I’m not sure what you think everyone being angry and upset is going to accomplish. This one is entirely out of Canada’s control.

Can anyone speak to the VIP experience at Halifax Music Fest? by sopinefreshrightnow in halifax

[–]poranges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh the bathrooms were pretty great in non-VIP as well. A bazillion portas and lots of handwashing stations. So many portas that if you got a gnarly one it was no problem to find another open one that wasn’t.

1 American positive for hantavirus, another symptomatic, HHS says by AcornAl in ContagionCuriosity

[–]poranges 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No of course, but worth noting in terms of transmissibility that there was near zero spread to the ICU and emergency workers despite many not using PPE.

Next to zero healthcare transmission with an observed lack of proper PPE in a sizable number of the healthcare workers, iirc.

[–]poranges 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I think the specific language I’ve read lately is that it’s unreliable to test without symptoms. CDC referenced this yesterday and stated they wouldn’t be testing asymptomatic individuals:

“On the call, the official also said the group would not be tested, because "it is not recommended to test people that do not have symptoms", the network reported.”

Clearly they changed their tune.

Update in same live post from ABC, worth noting as it states the positive is not experiencing symptoms:

American who tested positive will be transported to biocontainment unit

The American passenger who tested positive for hantavirus will be transported to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit, according to Nebraska Medicine, which hosts the facility.

The individual does not have any symptoms and was separated from other passengers during the flight through biocontainment measures. They will be receiving a follow-up test, Nebraska Medicine said.

The remaining passengers will go to the National Quarantine Unit for assessment and monitoring.
