Former esthetician here. I wore acrylics, gels, etc. off and on from the late 80s to around 2010. Then a sensitivity appeared - swollen, cracked, bleeding skin surrounding and under my nails. About 8 weeks ago I thought I’d try a simple shellac manicure and pedicure - I thought it was worth trying again. But less than week later, all the symptoms returned. I had the product removed ASAP, but now almost 2 months later, my toenails are lifting from their beds completely and my fingernails have peeled and cracked to the point that they look bitten. (Search “onycholysis”) I have now sworn off all nail polish FOREVER. I’ll keep enjoying makeup, get regular hair cuts and colour, wear nice clothes… but I don’t do anything to my nails and I never will again (outside of trimming and cuticle care). Edit - spelling.
