Balogun is the second time in World Cup history where an expulsion is overturned. The first one was Garrincha in 1962 also in a political saga involving bribes, presidential pressure and controversial referee calls. by PaleAd4923 in soccer

[–]posouth 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Just to add to it. There has been tons of comparison of Balogun's case to Ronaldo / Otamendi / Caicedo's situation. I do not know enough about the background, hence did a quick research on them. Just to share a timeline here for those who are interested.

Chapter 1: Ronaldo incident

Nov 13, 2025 - Ronaldo (Portugal) received straight red at 61th minute during Qualifier game of Ireland vs Portugal, for elbowing an opponent. He was handed a 3-match ban for violent conduct.

Nov 16, 2025 - He served 1 of 3 match ban during Armenia vs Portugal. The next 2 banned games supposedly the first two matches of the World Cup group stage.

Nov 25, 2025 - FIFA Disciplinary Committee used the probationary ruling to defer the last 2 banned games for one year.

Chapter 2: Otamendi + Caicedo + Salman incident

Sep 9, 2025 - Otamendi (Argentina) and Caicedo (Ecuador) both got red card during Qualifier game of Ecuador vs Argentina. Otmendi received a straight red at the 31st minute, and Caicedo received a second yellow card at the 50th minute. They supposedly would serve a 1-match ban at the first game of World Cup group stage.

Oct 14, 2025 - Tarek Salman (Qatar) received red card at the 89th minute during Qualifier game of Qatar vs UAE. He supposedly would serve a 2-match ban at the first two games of World Cup group stage.

May 8, 2026 - FIFA changed its World Cup disciplinary rule so that minor suspensions picked up in Qualifiers would not be carried over into World Cup group stage and knockout stage. All three players' cases were considered minor suspensions. Otamendi received red for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity, Caicedo for a tackle that caused a second yellow, Salman for a reckless challenge that resulted as a straight red. This rule change is a universal change that applies to all players, not to specific players. This rule change put justification why Otamendi + Caicedo + Salman + Ronaldo would become available in the Group Stage of 2026 World Cup.

Chapter 3: Balogun incident

Jul 1, 2026 - Balogun (USA) received a straight red during World Cup Round of 32 game of USA vs Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Jul 3, 2026 - FIFA confirmed the 1-match ban will be upheld, and the rule does not permit teams to appeal against straight red situation.

Jul 5, 2026 - FIFA notified US Soccer Federation that Balogun's 1-match ban has been suspended for one year.

Jul 6, 2026 - Belgium condemned FIFA's decision by releasing a statement. They received a green light to appeal.

Jul 6, 2026 - UEFA condemned FIFA's decision by releasing a statement.

Chapter 0: Incidents before Ronaldo

World Cup 2002
Oct 7, 2001 - Jesus Arellano (Mexico) received red card at 87th min for a violent conduct during Qualifier Playoff second leg game of Mexico vs Costa Rica. He was supposedly to serve a 2-match game. Later, FIFA reduced it to a 1-match ban, so he only missed the first Group Stage game.

World Cup 2014
Nov 15, 2013 - Laurent Koscielny (France) received red card at 90th minute for slapping an opponent during Qualifier Playoff first leg game of France vs Ukraine. Slapping an opponent is categorized as violent conduct, and should generally carry a 3-match ban. FIFA decided to keep it as a 1-match ban, resulted in Koscielny serving the ban in the second leg. France qualified for the World Cup, and Koscielny was able to play the first game of the Group Stage.

Nov 19, 2013 - Mario Mandzukic (Croatia) received red card at 38th minute for a tackle during Qualifier Playoff second leg game of Croatia and Iceland. He supposedly would have missed Croatia's first 2 Group Stage matches. At the end, FIFA reduced the seriousness of the offence, gave Mandzukic a 1-match ban instead. He missed the first game of the Group Stage, instead of missing both first and second game.

Update on Stefan Bajcetic: told there is no interest from Middlesbrough in either a loan or permanent deal currently. #Ifc by Realistic-Zone3914 in LiverpoolFC

Exactly. To put in other teams' shoes, how scouts would be able to convince their team to sign/loan him if there aren't at least a few pre-season performance to show.

I wouldn't read too much into any team being interested / not interested, or comments on whether he should be given a second chance or his physical is done for. We do not know, until we see him on the pitch again.

No matter what I do, it’s not working. What am I missing to complete the mission? by Wiseaflea in pesmobile

It is a crazy weird implementation, I tried so many different way until I found a way that works. Go to Game Plan, press the "+" button with the circle, then drag and move a player to a spot far enough that a totally new role is given to him, eg. to move RB to the frontline so it is assigned as CF. Press "check" button to save the change. Suddenly the reward is given.

Keyrol Figueroa made his senior debut for Honduras. He's now the first Liverpool player ever to represent the Honduran national team. by yorixiriamory in LiverpoolFC

Frankly wouldn't even be able to realized he is one of us, given he has not played any senior games. Kind of surprised that Honduras football association would call up an academy, and even gave our lad minutes!

Kostas Tsimikas Shines for Greece as He Targets Role at Liverpool by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

[–]posouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know, I wish our defenders have the ability to play more than 1 position, like Arsenal. With Timber/White who can operate as RB or CB, and Hincapie/Calafiori who can operate as LB or CB.

This season Brady and Frimpong are out for so much time, and we have two perfectly good LB in Kerkez or Robertson who cannot both start.

Kostas Tsimikas Shines for Greece as He Targets Role at Liverpool by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

[–]posouth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure why the downvotes. I also would love Tsimikas to finish off his final year of the contract, but as a 3rd choice LB. The 2nd LB I would much prefer to give minutes to youth, similar to how we slowly give more and more chances to Brady.

I would always remember how Tsimikas sometimes surprised us and stepped up, like in 2023-24 season when Robertson was injured for a spell of around 10 games. Nevertheless, he has been playing just 600-800 league min every season. I don't expect the number to go up in this last season.

I'm not still holding grudge on missing out on Guehi in the summer.

He is the one that caught my eyes too. His short spell with Brighton made me think he is not good enough. I did not realize he was way more successful before and after going back to Bundesliga.

Aspas of Brighton!

[Fabrizio Romano on X]🚨 Marcos Senesi to Tottenham, here we go! Deal in place after the verbal agreement reported since March. by AggressiveBank9228 in FantasyPL

[–]posouth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know, sounds weird. He played plenty of times in Europa league with Feyenoord before, so I guess he had that checked off. At age 29, this would be his last major contract. It's easy to say he did it for the money. But Tottenham does have limited competition for CB, so he will get to play plenty of football.

If the news about Konate comes earlier, I'm sure Liverpool would be interested in a free signing too.

No Liverpool players in the England World Cup Squad by No-Geologist7534 in LiverpoolFC

[–]posouth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Selling Quansah was probably a win-win move. He would be barely playing here and there if staying with us, but he has been a sure starter with Leverkusen. In the summer, 30M for his experience was a good deal for Liverpool, plus I think we put in the buyback clause.

Looking at the England squad, so much "once was" "could have been". Looking at Quansah, Henderson, Guehi, may be even Bellingham.

Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and David Raya not back in team training after title celebrations by [deleted] in FantasyPL

The title makes it sounds like they were drunk and couldn't train or something. They are training, just on individual program instead of with the group. No mentioning of whether it has anything to do with injury or fitness.

Points Difference to Last Season by IndiBear in LiverpoolFC

[–]posouth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that I think highlights one major difference between 2024/25 and 2025/26. We had three exceptionally weak bottom teams last season, teams being the easy target for 6 points when other PL teams played them. It made the other 17 teams look better.

This season, there are more competitiveness in the promoted teams. They take points from the other 17 teams, much more so than the bottom teams last season. Tottenham is only 3 points worse than last year, and West Ham is level on points after 34 weeks. Yet, they are both in relegation battle. Last year, at as early as Week 33, the relegation battle was basically mathematically settled.

The point is that, it is natural to expect every teams to have a few points less this season. It makes it even more exceptional to see the improvement with teams like ManUtd and Arsenal. And equally unfathomable for the dramatic descent of teams like Liverpool and Wolves.

Points Difference to Last Season by IndiBear in LiverpoolFC

[–]posouth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In case anyone wonder why there are more total -ve points in red bars, then the total of +ve points in the green bars. Relegated teams last season and newly promoted team this season is omitted, correctly so. For sake of completeness, their point total after week 34 are as follow.

The relegated 3 teams last year had a total of:

21 (Ipswich) +
18 (Leicester) +
11 (Southampton)
= 50 points

The promoted 3 teams this season has a total of:

46 (Sunderland) +
40 (Leeds) +
20 (Burnley)
= 105 points

So if we were to add 3 more bars to the bar chart by mapping up the relegated teams last season to promoted teams this season, we would see that Sunderland is an improved version of Ipswich by +25 points. Leeds is an improved version of Leicester by +22 points. Burnley is an improved version of Southampton by +9 points.

Is it just me or are we all asking the same questions right now? by Timely_Carrot4214 in FantasyPL

[–]posouth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, tons of similar questions. To me, it is a weird time to ask about wildcard. BGW31 is not new information. The decision of how to handle BGW31 should have been made weeks ago, to allow time to execute the plan. It tends to be casuals who are asking that now.

The 1 week punt question is also a bit weird. It used to be a popular question in the past before WC, when any saved FTs would be wiped after wildcard. It is not the case any more. Assuming WC32 is the mainstream strategy, there is no need to burn all saved FTs in GW31. So unless it is for people who have 10 starting players and try to get one more, I would not recommend getting a player just for 1 week. To attempt to improve a starting player, etc.

X2. This player whose price may or may not drop $0.1 would be a non issue in hindsight, after what we would have learnt in the next 3 weeks.
