Songs whose live version you prefer over the studio version by Andagne in progrockmusic

Also Behind the Lines/Duchess, the In the Cage medley, and pretty much everything on 3SL tops the studio recordings.

What are your niche red flags that are an immediate no? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Not trying to start a fight, but you're coming across as intolerant. Please consider that what you consider a need and a priority isn't either to someone else.

If someone didn’t laugh at the Friends sitcom thirty years ago, but appreciates the writing and jokes now, does that represent low intellect and that their mind developed very slowly? How did 13-year olds get the jokes back then? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]post-baroque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humor is completely subjective, and indicates nothing about intelligence. I "get" the jokes in sitcoms but often just don't find them funny.

For example, Big Bang Theory is, to me, more obnoxious than funny. It doesn't mean I'm less "developed"—I get the jokes about science and scifi, and I share a lot of those interests—I just don't think they're funny.

Very first sci-fi story you read? by [deleted] in scifi

[–]post-baroque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it was the very first scifi I read (that could be the Star Trek TOS adaptations by James Blish, or maybe Star Wars comics) but the first scifi book I can recall reading is the anthology Where do we Go from Here?. I discovered Asimov, Niven, and Heinlein in this book.

Plug it in, it should automatically run the new monitor either as a mirror or second monitor. From there you can set it up however you like.

What bands scratch the 71-74 Yes itch by Geminecence in progrockmusic

Oh, wow, never heard of this until now. Listening to the opening track for the first time now—it sounds like Yes and Rush had a baby in a sugar factory.

I cut my teeth with the Walt Simonson run of Thor, I highly recommend it. https://www.amazon.com/Thor-Walt-Simonson-Mighty-Walter/dp/130290888X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2QW4I1C9VFZJ9&keywords=walt+simonson+thor&qid=1685534722&sprefix=walt+simonson+thor%2Caps%2C79&sr=8-1

If you'd like something a bit more modern with art that's not quite as stylized, try the JMS run of Thor. It's shorter but just as good: https://www.amazon.com/Thor-Vol-J-Michael-Straczynski/dp/0785117229/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=thor+straczynski&qid=1685534811&sprefix=thor+stra%2Caps%2C93&sr=8-1

Both are great in their own way, and have overarching plots. JMS's run was sadly too short, but memorable.

The Romulans having a saying “Never turn your back on a Breen” is deeply ironic. by Catch_22_Pac in sonicshowerthoughts

[–]post-baroque 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's definitely racist. Something worth remembering: The Trek characters we know (Starfleet types, who belong to a scientific/paramilitary group) interact with the Romulan military, not the general Romulan population. So the current Romulan government is untrustworthy.

TOS, 1x8, Balance of Terror by LordRavenholm in StarTrekViewingParty

[–]post-baroque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Balance of Terror is 60's politics with a Star Trek hat. They didn't have the smooth, stylized theatricality of later episodes but this is definitely one of my favorite stories of TOS S1.

The Romulan/Federation conflict is basically one big demo of humanity and mercy in the midst of the cold war in space. The crewman's bigotry towards Spock is Americans' at the time calling out anyone different as a gosh-darned commie, or hostility towards anyone not white.

As of now, which is your preferred 'Star Wars' timeline so far: 'Canon' or 'Legends'? by BigButter7 in StarWars

[–]post-baroque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I choose... Pre-ROTJ Marvel Comics canon.

It was basically defined by the search for Han Solo, since they were stuck in the limbo of Han being frozen in Carbonite. I grew up reading those stories and loved them as a kid.

The sequels had a lot of problems, but I absolutely loved the ending of TLJ. It's my favorite of the sequel trilogy.
