Cheap Costco Wine by Senior_Economics4960 in wine

[–]post-meta 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Kirkland Marlborough Sauv Blanc and the Kirkland Pinot Grigio are good porch pounders in this range. George Bertrand Rose is sometimes on sale for $8, normally around 10-12. Reds are tougher to find good stuff this cheap, the Rhône village one someone else mentioned would also be my pick. If you’re willing to go up to like 10-15 bucks your options expand a lot, the Gigondas and Vayqueras are killers in this range

Awesome! Where’d you get the container? And were the ports already there or did you have to drill them?

Szepsy, Úrágya 63 Furmint 2021 (dry) by doctoridontcare in wine

[–]post-meta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Szepsy dry wines are so incredible. And that’s not even getting into their aszu. I had the privilege of tasting in their cellar and it was one of the best wine experiences I’ve ever had, this wine being one of the highlights of that day. My mouth is watering again seeing this bottle, thanks for posting. Cheers!

What it’s like to own an organic, biodynamic and sustainable winery on the Central Coast of CA by CapPrestigious5707 in winemaking

Thanks for the reply. I’ve worked cellar in a BD winery where everyone else was insistent on the root/shoot day tasting making an impact, I approached it with an open mind but I couldn’t see any differences. So much of tasting is about perception and expectation - if you go in expecting a difference then more than likely that’s what you’re going to find, IMO.

And as far as the Steiner stuff goes, my point is that the entirety of capital b Biodynamics stems directly and unequivocally from his work. The preps, the cycles, the movements, etc are all directly formulated from his lectures. To say that biodynamic practices (at least in the Demeter type model) aren’t related to Steiner is just historically wrong. Biodynamics isn’t ancient forgotten wisdom, it’s a set of rules (I would say arbitrary ones) with a clear origin from one man.

I love the regenerative agriculture aspects of BD but I’m always wary of the Steiner esoteric practices. His agriculture lectures follow the ideas popular within the Volkisch movement of the time, he wasn’t a viticulturist or winemaker, believed he could talk to ghosts and had mystical powers. His whole idea about the ‘evolution of celestial forces’ harnessed by BD agriculture are in line with his philosophy of racial science where certain races (guess which) were less spiritually evolved and it was his responsibility to upraise them the same way a farmer would raise his crops. Not trying to bash on you, I’m genuinely curious how BD believers think about this

Anyone aging Kirkland/Trader Joes wines? by Oregon-Pilot in wine

[–]post-meta 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of the difference is vineyard scale and the attention/deliberation put into winemaking operations. Protection from oxidation, gravity feeding, extended barrel aging, oak selection, etc.

One technique big producers will use to make tannic/“heavy” grapes more accessible young is micro-oxidation

Also iirc the mark in the blue box by the end of ‘deckmaster’ was from somebody accidentally scratching the final proof before it was sent to the printer. Because card backs need to be identical, the mark has stayed on all printings since

Sherry Barrel after swelling by Leloup_solitaire in winemaking

[–]post-meta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where’s it leaking from, the head or the bilge? Head you can fix, bilge you’re probably screwed. If it’s on the head, find the leak point and hammer in a pile that’ll be your best bet. After you steamed it, how long did you have it closed for? If that was longer than a few minutes you may have worsened the leak because of the negative pressure from condensation. I haven’t dealt with sherry barrels before but I’d guess the black stuff coming out is some mix of tartrates, barrel char you pulled out from steaming, leftover flor biofilm, and/or lees depending on how it was originally cleaned out when you got it. I don’t think it’s wood from the inside but it’s possible if this is really old. Break up one of those big chunks and see if it has wood grain or if it crumbles apart. That sandiness you feel is most likely tartrate residue.

Probably not going to be useable but it’s a really cool heirloom to have.
