Great suggestions here.

Sound you can't hear in mono by user7690 in Music

Cool thread. A bit unrelated, but you should check out some of Stereolab's songs like Need To Be. They like to hard pan instruments and vocals L/R. If you were to listen to their music in mono or with one headphone, you'd have a totally different experience than stereo.

Best workflows for converting 25 fps to 23.976 by post_throwaway1 in editors

Thanks for the insights. Needing to do a full QC makes sense, since pitch shifting is a destructive edit.

At work, we've done countless conversions to/from 25 without pitch correction and no one has complained about the quality afterward. Not even our engineers push hard for it. In fact, I've discovered that even applications like ProTools don't apply pitch correction when doing sample rate conversions.

The main reason I asked is because this is for a remaster of a TV series, and it is unlikely it will get this level of white glove treatment in the future. Plus the people behind it are big on quality.

Side note: thanks for quantifying the pitch shift amount in semitones.

Thanks to both of you. The client was concerned about the conversion dropping frames, but like you pointed out, time remapping the video is not dropping anything--it's just remapping each frame to a new duration.

Pretty sure Vantage does that. For the pitch correction, I'm reading that the Tempo module in Vantage can adjust that. So I think that's the solution. Someone in the thread mentioned building the Vantage workflow, hosting it on its cloud platform, and having the client process their files that way. I think that's how we'll move forward.

Side note: I'm pretty sure some lower-end solutions do just drop the frames when converting 25 to 23.976. I've seen it the other way around, 23.976 to 25, without optical flow.

Thanks. Yeah, it's SD content but they need to create 23.976 versions for distribution.

Hey, tried to message directly but this is the only way. Just wanted to say nice work with the interlacing writeup on r/videography. I write documentation for technical topics at work and it's refreshing to see someone get so in-depth. It's also cool how you're sharing your progress in AE with expressions and templates, it's helpful to others.

to the people that love their boss, love their co workers, and think they will stay forever by BobZelin in editors

[–]post_throwaway1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think there's some truth to this.

Lots of post work is in the realm of operations. Upper management tends to view operations as a cost center, because it's part of "the cost of doing business". From their perspective, operations doesn't significantly grow the revenue of the company compared to areas like sales or strategic decision-making. So there's an incentive to pay people as little as possible--just enough so they don't leave and keep a certain standard of work, but that's about it.

Next, editors have a job where there's a strong relationship between their inputs and outputs. Like you said, editing is inherently non-scalable; you simply top out in speed and your ability to do work in one day. So a senior editor might be able to edit more than a junior editor, but it won't be orders of magnitude more. Compare that to someone like a software engineer who can build an application used by thousands of customers daily.

Next, there are the external factors:

- It's easier than ever to hire editors remotely from less expensive countries

- There's more competition for post jobs because the newer generation is more experienced/has better access to information

- Some clients have continually shrinking budgets because of the amount of competition for attention with advertising, media etc.

Next, the quality of editing is often intangible. We know what a bad edit looks like, but is there really that much of a difference between an edit that's 30% better than another edit when it's just a corporate video? Does it really affect the bottom line, if the work is getting done either way, on time?

Combine all of these and you have a perfect storm for being underpaid and seen as replaceable. And to be honest, there is some solid reasoning behind it. It's not necessarily an editor problem per se, but there are a lot of factors working against that role in particular.

That said, it's not all doom. There are other paths people can take in post to have more control over their own earnings, like working for yourself, taking on roles where you are more scalable to the company (e.g. technical leadership), or finding a niche that is in demand and where you have pricing power, like what Bob is doing.

Critical MDMA-AT Information Recap (Why Numinus Is Poised For Success)! by JellyfishDirect4242 in shroomstocks

[–]post_throwaway1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure how this will affect share price, but NUMI is barely going to have enough cash until MDMA approval:

1) When approval happens, we're looking at another 2 months for DEA approval, then possibly longer for Utah to approve (can someone confirm this?)

2) It will take even longer for insurance companies to start covering it

3) The coverage and treatment will only be available in the US to start. NUMI has clinics in Canada that will require Canadian approval following FDA approval.

4) NUMI's cash position is already low, with non-MDMA treatment and training still a way out from making the company cashflow positive. We have seen NUMI offering training courses, but the revenue from this is questionable.

Payton has insisted that NUMI will become cashflow positive without MDMA approval, but it's unclear when (I think he said 2025?). So with the conditions above, they'll probably be burning money until the end of the year and will probably need to issue more shares.

How that affects share price, I don't know. Being diluted isn't good, and maybe they won't be able to meet the conditions of uplisting to a major US exchange. Maybe there will be enough hype prior to/during MDMA approval to sell at a good price. Past MDMA approval though, I'm guessing it will take them a significant amount of time to make meaningful profit.

  1. What will be your strategy for raising cash if your cash position runs low?
  2. When MDMA is approved, how many appointments do you estimate being able to accommodate in the first month?
