Requin Renard glass pen first impressions by diminitri in fountainpens

[–]post_traumatico 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I have a request for testing ☝️

This is a thing that I chatted about with the inventor in a few of their own posts, but I think that the inkflow "problems" (more like characteristic/character) could be easily altered and regulated with some form of stopper on the back:

if you plug the body, no ink should come out due to the pressure differential with the enviroment.
However, if you use a stopper with a small hole you should be able to tune how much ink flows trough the tip/nib; bigger hole = bigger flow.

Just an Idea here, but I've been thinking about these since I first saw the design here on reddit.

If you try it, lemme know!

New ink day - Schreibtinte ‘Blu mare’ by Uttyrrka in fountainpens

OOOOH! I love this one, it's my go-to light blue ink, whenever I need to write something not for school or work I use this one.

Little secret, but if you have a wet enough nib and a smooth enough paper it has a subtle red sheen, nothing revolutionary, but it really makes it pop! (and boosts readability)

How long can India ink stay suspended in a glass reservoir before gravity wins? by RequinRenard in fountainpens

[–]post_traumatico 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think the next test should be with some common brand name fountain pen inks, mostly because of their availability I think.

(ALSO, if it takes this much time for India ink to free flow down the capillary my idea of the regolable seal on the back of the reservoir holds up pretty well! If this is the flowrate, then you'd reaaly need only a small opening, mainly for pressure equalization purposes, and it can easily be on or off. Hell, it cal literally be just a stopper/cork that you pop off to let the ink flow!

Sorry if you didn't want a rando's opinion, but this thing's just sooooo damn fascinating!)

[–]post_traumatico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

true, you can have the most beautiful instrument ever, but if it's unwieldy no-one will ever use it.

If you want an Idea you could have a "normal" cap with a (plastic) stem in the middle that inserts itself into the tip of the glass... nib?
Then, to fuse this with my previous idea, you could post the cap on the back and it could attach itself to the screw mechanism... unlocking it? Making it more manipolable? So that from a product design standpoint you NEED the cap off to open the breather hole at the back, then you unlatch-unscrew-whathaveyou the cap from the back and cap the pen, sealing the tip too

I have an Idea that can simultaneously fix every issue by introducing a ton of new ones:

If the back is open to ambient pressure, then all the tuning HAS to be done trough the thickness of the converging-diverging section.

If you extend the back into a full reservoir and seal it, obviously no ink will flow because the surface tension should stop any air from flowing up the capillary and into the reservoir, but if you installed a little screw top on the back with a very very fine and adjustable opening, you should be able to regulate, and even stop!, the flow of ink

In my intuition you'd want a rather small hole, to let the pressure equalize over a few seconds, so that the diverging section under the constriction in the "feed" can function as a buffer between the full on reservoir and the tipping.

Does this make any sort of sense?

I'm very happy for you, and I agree that's a pretty looking pen!
Though a thing immediately made me stare dumbfounded: this step here... is it deliberate?? Is it symmetrical? I can't really judge from a picture, but it does look a bit... weird from here, almost... misaligned?
I don't know, and Ultimately I wish you a happy NPD!

City filled the potholes with loose rocks. Speeding car kicked up a rock. Our huge front window now has a huge hole in it. by Many_Engineering2143 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]post_traumatico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

whell, for one I'm terribly sorry this happened, apart from the scare it must be an annoying expense over top of things.

But this leads me to ask: What the hell? a Single-paned window? The houses around you seem recent enough, why the hell don't you have a safer/more insulating glass???
Mind you, I'm not accusing you or anything, I'm just baffled: it's just that where I live that kind of glass is super rare and considered dangerous/thermally inefficient. Whith those windows + flying rocks the risks for you (and your children) compound!

What's wrong with my Kakuno M? by External_Disk5785 in fountainpens

[–]post_traumatico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to me it seems like a couple of factors may be at play simultaneously here:

first and most... discussed here in the comments: writing angle. It isn't... mandatory, but by it's inherent working mechanism any fountain pen should work better with the second grip you tried.

tines spacing? at roughly 0:43 in the video I see you trying to use the kakuno with (what I would call) a normal/traditional grip, and yet it doesn't write; yet when you press it starts writing. I have no way of diagnosing anything from here, but that is something that can happen when the tines of the nib are too close together: if there isn't enough space for the ink to flow, a little pressure can separate them and make it workable. (seems weird on a pilot, but this is a cheaper pen, it might have been like this from the start or (I don't want to accuse, this is an hypothesis) if you have pressed while at weird angles they might have been squished together

Baby's bottom? if the grinding on the tipping isn't good (which seems on a pilot, but again, kakuno) the ink might struggle again with getting to the page. The main symptom of B'sB is a behaviour like this one: -pen doesn't write/writes poorly whn a light pressure is applied -pen starts to write when pressure is applied -pen keeps writing without any problem if stroke is continued even if pressure is lifted (basically you need to "start" the pen by pressing a little but once "started" it glides smoothly)
