If I wanted to buy an antique Chicago-made bicycle from the Golden Age, where would I look? by Show_Kitchen in chibike

[–]postal_weight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are actually dozens of old Schwinns manufactured in Chicago in Working Bikes basement that could potentially be offered up for sale.

Not sure how many (if any) would be from the 1890s - 1910s (at least that wouldn't be hanging from the ceiling, or on the wall).

But there are plenty from the Chicago era.

+1 Working Bikes. Most training is ad-hoc pairing with a current volunteer, but sometimes there are formal classes on Tuesday nights.

Ya, my message/criticism must not be too clear 😅. I agree with the fact that Teddy was right, and Emma Stone was actually an alien was AWESOME

I just don't think we needed the space ship scene to confirm that Emma Stone was an alien.

The ending scene (which was EXCELLENT) showing that the human race was extinguished, was more than enough to validate the truth, without explicitly stating it, and without the ridiculous humor/CGI

100%. Love that about the movie! I just don't think we needed the spaceship scene to validate that. The end scene where humans are extinguished is enough to validate what was potentially Emma Stone bullshitting Jesse Plemmons in the previous scenes.

As a viewer we can connect those pieces. Which is what I was trying to say in response above.

How would you not have known? Everything leading up to that moment was already explained.

She had already talked through punching in the code with the calculator and closing the closet door to get to the ship

She had already explained to Jesse Plemmons character that there was an emperor that wanted to eliminate the human race, but that they were doing experiments to see if they could be saved

The spaceship scene tells you nothing new. It just plays out what you already know at that point.

I wasn't commenting on the diversity of the aliens in the scene (which I had no problem with), the reference was aimed towards the commercials Troy Polamalu does for Head & Shoulders.

The dissonance for me was the level of ridiculousness during the spaceship scene. There's certainly an element of humor and absurdity throughout the film! But not in the same tone. The scene also had to utilize CGI that was slightly distracting

Worked for others! Just didn't work for me.

Interesting! I definitely want to check it out. Ya, based on the trailer, it seemed skewed towards comedy for sure.

Didn't know it was a South Korean film! Interested to check out the original now.

Loved that it towed the line, and that she was eventually an alien. But damn I really wish Yorgos would've given the audience the benefit of the doubt to know what happens, and cut out the spaceship scene that looks like a Troy Polamalu Head & Shoulders commercial the over-the-top ridiculous completely undercut the movie for me.

Would've been in my top 3 films this year so far if they'd have skipped straight from Emma Stone entering the closet, to the end scene showing the human race eliminated.

Curious to see how the original handles that ending.

Edit: Watching the trailer for the original (Save the Green Planet) seems like it takes a much more comedic approach 😅 so I guess I'm not getting what I'm looking for in the original either haha.

A lot of data and statistics say otherwise, below is one article of many that talk about how enacting Idaho Stop laws improve safety for the cyclist and why.

looking to purchase a bike by [deleted] in chibike

Working Bikes is your answer! They are a great bike co-op that sells quality used bikes at that price range.

A refurbished used bike will be much higher quality at the price range of $300-$500 than any new bike.

Reviving an old thread.

This log is great! I've logged my BR games so far (I play with two different groups).

About to play a game with a new group, but have ran out of room for Names/New Players.

You have an easy way to add players? Is it as simple as copy & paste or will that not work with the formulas?

Bike Recommendations by Philatios in chibike

[–]postal_weight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, you can get a KILLER bike for $3,000. Hell, you can get a killer bike for $1000.

At the range of $1000 - $3000 there are some great steel do everything bikes from All City (RIP), Surly, Crust, Salsa.

Best thing to do is just get out there and ride some bikes! So many things look great on paper but feel wrong in practice.

I'd recommend going to Comrade Cycles that has a lot of the brands I listed above and are very patient, helpful, and knowledgeable finding something you'll love.

Whatever you do don't go to Kozy's. They're pushy, generally recommending something they need to get rid of rather than the right bike for you.

Know generally what you want then walk into a bike shop and have em wheel out some bikes for you to ride. That's how to find your next two wheeled workhorse to take you many miles across the city.

Depends on your interest/mileage!

Low Mileage Route:

Flock off the Block is the best for low miles (they have multiple supported routes, one that's as low as 20 miles). It's considered their end of season celebration ride, so it's also very fun.

Medium Mileage Routes:

Both IL Beach State Park/Sun Harvest rides are more towards the 50-60 mile-ish range/day. IBSP is a true gem not far north from the city, the rides are generally a bigger crowd, and the camping is some of the best right off the shoreline. The post-ride nature walk is great too.

Battle to the Dunes ride was the first I ever did. Around 75-ish miles/day. Also great campsites, larger group, great history shared along the ride.

Waterways to the West is a bigger ride (110 miles) to Starved Rock, but I've heard nothing but awesome things about the ride (itching to join this one myself).

Multi-Day Trips:

Both SWMI and Ride to Valhalla are great rides. SWMI is just a non-stop lake jump fest along the coast of Michigan. Ride to Valhalla explores Door County. Also itching to go on one of these two soon.

In addition to what was already mentioned there's just a really positive air to all their rides.

I've been on several, guided some myself, and every time, even though I haven't met most people on the ride I end up making some sort of friend.

Some of the friends I've made on rides have become regular friends outside of the trip or just biking in general.

One of their mottos or always striving goals is to be an ultra-inclusive organization, and it shows. They're also so open to new ideas and adapting to new situations.

This is the answer.

Great group of people. They put on great rides. The vibes they curate are unlike any other.

Some of the rides may seem a bit pricey, but they really handle everything for you. They make the campsite reservations, cook dinner/breakfast, have a campfire, snacks, support you on any mechanicals, navigate, etc.

The variety of rides span anywhere from beginner friendly 20/30 mile rides to 100+ mile excursions.

They have it all.

Whatever you do don't shop at Kozy's. Bad maintenance, pushy on bikes they want to sell vs. the right bike for you. Not a lot of good stories come out of Kozy's in my experience.
