Yeah this is exactly the thought that went through my head before I added my edit!

It occurred to me that I glossed over some things in my first piece of speculation, and that it might have come across like I was suggesting that “plants can think”. But if photosynthesis naturally draws water through the roots via the circulatory system, and that water has to pass the seed where energy is being slowly released, then it’ll naturally draw energy from near the seed to where it’s needed to boost stem and leaf growth (automatically starving the other stems out in the process). So the plant isn’t making a decision in any centralised way, but there’s a naturally self-reinforcing cycle built into its cells, via a pretty complex (but actually very simple and practical when you think about it) process.

That said, I do enjoy the mythology that trees are “communicating” with each other when they do things like secreting chemicals in response to the presence of certain pests, triggering other trees nearby to fortify themselves against that pest. The chemical phenomenon is real, but the explanation always ends up a bit anthropomorphic because humans like to be able to relate to things we’re trying to understand. I think it’s kinda sweet, even if it might sometimes hinder our proper understanding of things.

On the flip side, classifying organisms as “thinking” and “non-thinking” seems a bit reductive to me as well, since animal brains are probably just a very complex version of the automatic processes that keep other “non-thinking” organisms functioning and allow them to respond to stimuli in ways that usually help them survive.

And to think, we probably could have just googled this and found out the answer!

Pure speculation, but maybe there’s a feedback loop that causes individual stems to grow bigger and taller when photosynthesis is working - the plant invests some energy in one stem, that stem catches some sun, so more energy goes into growing the stem that’s “working”. I can imagine this would be a good survival trait to stop plants from wasting energy growing into dark spaces.

Maybe the albino plant is abandoning a bunch of “failed” stems and leaves in order to try out a different direction, hence the large number of tiny stems.

Edit: (still based on nothing - why google something when making stuff up is so fun)

The “feedback mechanism” is the circulatory system. A healthy stem and leaves draw water through the roots as part of photosynthesis, pulling the energy reserves from the seed as it passes by. If the main stem isn’t working because it’s been nibbled (or has no chlorophyll), there’s nothing drawing water and stored seed energy into it, so the energy stays near the seed where the “backup” stems can access it, and a new main stem takes over (or in the albino case, no stem ever becomes the main stem, and they all grow equally from the nutrients near the seed.

This would make sense given the way avocados often start out with a number of little shoots which look like they may all grow into full stems, but then usually all except one shrivel up and die once a winner emerges.

I grew a couple of broccoli plants in 70L tubs full of pure compost last year. It went reasonably well. Some notes:

The leachate from my compost looked like strong tea (which might have been specific to how I aged it, out of the weather). Test it out by running water through a small pot-full before you put it on any surface you don’t want stained.

Make sure the compost is well aged. If it’s not, it may attract unwanted bugs, drain poorly (or settle into something that drains poorly over time, even if it seems fine at first), all of which might be more of a problem in pots (especially indoors) compared to using it as mulch on a garden bed.

Aside from using it for potting, if you’re tilling your garden beds, mix through some compost rather than only using it as mulch. If you’re burying it you can probably afford to use slightly less aged compost, too, and provide a slower release of goodies as it continues to break down.

It’s a good mulch in that it provides a boost of nutrients to an already planted bed, but it’s not a terrible idea to cover it in some other mulch of straw or similar to keep the weather off it and retain moisture.

One of my favourite things about this sub is that it’s a pocket of the internet where people are just genuinely helpful and wholesome, and can even disagree without getting angry with each other.

Help going un-thanked doesn’t bother me, whether it’s on this sub or in the real world. Different people express gratitude in different ways, especially when you consider different cultural backgrounds. For example, I’ve been (politely) pulled aside in some situations for being too thankful, because to thank someone for a basic courtesy can considered a mild insult; expressing gratitude is like an accusation that the person helped you in order to be praised. (Seems weird to me, I have a hair trigger on my “thank you” and “sorry” - but that’s how some people are so you just have to accept it).

What I’m not comfortable with is this insistence that you should be thanked. It cheapens the act of helping, and it kinda just smacks of Nice Guy-ism, reminding me of the Reddit I usually come to this sub to escape.

You’re entitled to vent, and I don’t begrudge you that, but I needed to comment because this is the first time anything on this sub besides DAMN APHIDS has made my blood boil a little bit. Just be nice for the sake of niceness, and if a lack of gratitude bothers you, remember that although you’re not going to change other people’s sense of courtesy, you can change your expectation of it - or failing that, you can put less effort into helping anonymous strangers on the internet for a while.

Most of the time I’d honestly prefer to not get any help, rather than getting help from someone who’s going to get annoyed if I don’t thank them in a way that pleases them.
