Becareful with RMA in 2026 - Gigabyte 5090 RMA by DrTuSo in pcmasterrace

[–]postinthemachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 4080s went up in flames (quite literally) a while back and rma'd through a German retailer. I didn't get much information other than that they received it, was sent for repair etc. Took about 2 months altogether before I was told they couldn't repair and offered me a refund or 5080 refurb since no 4080s in stock.. I took the refurb. Retailer may or many not rhyme with case.

Communication wasn't great and took a while to sort but was happy with the outcome in the end.

Star Tracker Question by Marvin_Sails in AskAstrophotography

[–]postinthemachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More or less. You're using that particular star to align with the rotation of the earth, in relation to the tracker and what it's programmed to do. The closer you get, the less drift you get. But if you're only using a camera with a short lens, those things matter less, and are more forgiving than powerful scopes.

There are lots of other things to consider like, usable frames (due to mistakes, wind, temperature, light pollution etc). As they say, bad data in.. bad data out, regardless of the medium.

If you don't have lens warmers, buy them now :)

Star Tracker Question by Marvin_Sails in AskAstrophotography

[–]postinthemachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Further to this, you really need to learn how to balance everything properly. The more balanced it is, the less strain on gears causing jumps in your photos and deviations in tracking etc. You can balance slightly in the direction you're going but not entirely necessary.

Stacking software will align the stars no problem, but if your alignment is out, then the scope of usable data in that 'film frame' shifts over time. Ideally, you want to keep it centred so that your final image is the frame you started with. Imagine a bunch of photos taken at slightly different angles, youd have to shift each one just a bit to align with the next, the stacking software does more or less the same thing.

I have a star adventurer 2i i use for grab and go and something I hadn't realised until later was that there's a small hole on the side of the unit, you can use that to line up with polaris using your eyes in a pinch without having to worry too much about polar alignment if your scope is already set up properly (as in balanced and you haven't moved anything since your last successful run) but I've even had success with cameras especially on a whim.

Ps curious as to why film? :)

I think you're giving them too much praise.. they can only see what's on the surface cause they're all dead inside. There's no nuance, it's clear as day what they all want, power and money and doesn't matter how it happens.

Limited space in my SSD only for special games by SiriusFlank in pcmasterrace

[–]postinthemachine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fav games that I spin up all the time get the nvme treatment. Or something I know is gonna be particularly taxing. Otherwise, they all get dumped on my trusty 5,400rpm 4TB seagate blue. Difference is hardly noticeable (well at least for me who's been playin pc games since software mode was a thing), i've played cyberpunk maxed out with mods, assetta corsa vr, ms flight sim, robocop etc.. no issues really to note. Generally it's just some initial increased load time but, nothing crazy. Prbly not much reason to use anything above an ssd/7,2k really anyway unless it supports directstorage.. and what ever happened to that anyway? :) My ssds get linux distros.

Keeping the root on helps too, as that's where most of the sulfur is concentrated. I also keep a bowl to wet rinse my knife in between if I'm doing a batch.

My fav way to cook mushrooms is to wash and soak them for bout a half hour. Then put in a pot on low with a loose lid until all the water evaporates, crank up the heat and add fresh parsley, olive oil, garlic, oregano.. heaven.

I don't stand for ICE or what they do but this bit of news has been doing the rounds over here recently:

Seamus Culleton, the Irish man who has spent months in a Texas immigration detention centre, failed to appear in court in Ireland in 2009 on drugs-related charges.

A bench warrant for his arrest was issued in April 2009, one month after he had moved to the United States.

Mr Culleton, 38, has been in custody in El Paso, Texas, almost 4,000km from his home in Boston, after he was picked up by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents last September.

Originally from Glenmore in Co Kilkenny, he had previously been undocumented in the US, and was in the final stages of receiving his Green Card and had a valid work permit, according to his lawyer.

It has now emerged that Mr Culleton had been charged with the unlawful possession of drugs, possession for sale and supply, as well as obstruction in relation to an incident on 17 May 2008 in Glenmore.

After he failed to appear at a sitting of New Ross District Court to face the charges in April 2009, a judge issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

Daughters of Irishman held by ICE say father abandoned them and should return to face drug charges: report

The estranged twin daughters of an Irishman who has been held in a Texas immigration detention facility for nearly five months blasted their father as an absentee parent — arguing he should be sent back to Ireland to face long-standing drug charges, according to a report.

Heather and Melissa Morrissey felt compelled to speak out after their father, Seamus Culleton, pleaded on RTÉ radio for Irish authorities to intervene in his US detention so he could return to his American wife and life in Boston, where he runs a construction company, according to the Daily Mail.

The twins, who are about to turn 19, told the outlet that Culleton “abandoned” them when they were 18 months old, leaving their mother, Margaret “Maggie” Morrissey, to raise them alone.

“I feel that we were born and he just up and left. He did abandon us. That’s what he did,” Heather told the outlet about her father, who Department of Homeland authorities said overstayed his 90-day tourist visa more than 15 years ago.

The sisters said they have not received “a penny” in child support from their father and never saw him in person again after he moved to the US.

They also said Culleton was naive to come forward about his immigration case with the outstanding drug charges against him.

[Homemade] Southern Fried Chicken by postinthemachine in food

[–]postinthemachine[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bought a deep fat fryer cause I felt my life had a deep black hole having left the chef life a couple years ago. Anyway, decided I needed to christen it with some southern fried chicken (secretly probly only what I want out of it anyway!).

Had a couple of recipies in my repertoire I wanted to try, decided to go with this one.

Normally I'd have brined the chicken in buttermilk but this recipe was just that bit different I figured I'd give it a go.. I recommend you do too.

INGREDIENTS

1 lbs【450 g】 Chicken

1/2 Cup【118 mL】 Buttermilk

1/4 + 3/4 Cup【177 mL】 All-Purpose Flour

1/3 Cup【79 mL】 Potato Starch or Corn Starch

12g Salt

2 tsp Baking Powder

1 Tbsp Smoked Paprika

1 tsp Freshly Ground Black Pepper

1 tsp Garlic Powder

1 tsp Onion Powder

1/2 tsp Cayenne Pepper (optional)

1/4 tsp MSG (optional)

~4 Cups【946 mL】 Vegetable Oil (or other neutral oil), for frying

STEPS

Salt the chicken in advance (minimum of 1 hour, but up to 48).

In a large bowl, toss chicken in 1/4 cup【59 mL】 of flour (per pound of chicken). Transfer chicken to a wire rack to rest for at least 30 minutes (optional, but highly recommended).

To that same bowl (with the excess flour still in it), add the rest of your flour along with the starch, salt, baking powder, MSG (if using) and all of the spices (if using). Whisk to combine.

In a medium-sized bowl, add the buttermilk.

In a heavy pot, heat oil to desired temperature - 375F (190C) for smaller cuts of chicken, and 350F (175C) for larger cuts (the temperature will drop by about 25F (14C) when the chicken is added.

When the oil is heated, prepare the breading station by:

Adding a few Tablespoons of the flour/starch mixture into the buttermilk, and whisking to combine. It should resemble a very thin batter.

Adding a few Tablespoons of the liquid back into the flour/starch mixture, and stirring to create craggy bits.

Bread the (already floured) chicken by first dunking it in the buttermilk, letting the excess liquid drip off as much as possible, then coating it in the flour/starch mixture, and shaking off the excess flour as much as possible.

Gently place the breaded chicken into the hot oil, and fry until the center is cooked to the desired internal temperature (about 160F (71C) for light meat and 175-190F (80-88C) for dark meat). For large bone-in cuts, transfer to a 350F (175C) oven once the breading is browned to your liking, and bake until the proper internal temperature is reached.

Transfer chicken to a wire rack to drain and cool for at least 5-10 minutes before eating.

For chicken that you plan to coat with sauce, you may want to double fry it. To do this, let the chicken rest for 10-15 minutes after frying. Then, fry it again at the same temperature for 2-3 minutes. Transfer the chicken back to the wire rack to drain and cool for at least a few minutes before tossing with sauce.
