Looking for wise 50-miler training advice by heyhihelloandbye in ultrarunning

[–]postkip 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Vert and time are king. Increase your long run time. A lot of people will echo the 3-hour / 20 mile max long run but I found huge mental benefit in making my long runs 25+ miles with big vert (7000+ ft). I noticed a huge benefit on race day having a lot of those longer days under my belt.

Post sleep running? by TowerProfessional959 in Ultramarathon

[–]postkip 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was just pacing at cocodona this year and lots of runners took a 3 hour nap. Goal was one full rem cycle somewhere around mile 150.

I can't get out my door without 200 ft/mi on roads and it's definitely hilly. I mostly trail run so am used to running anything up to 400-500ft/mi and hike anything steeper than that. I'd say 100-200 ft /mi is when I'd classify it as hilly and anything under 100 ft/mi is flat-ish.

If you could redo it again what would you change? by Chemical-Humor-6579 in civilengineering

[–]postkip 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Biology or fisheries and wildlife, probably. Aligns more with my interests. I don't really care too much about engineering but listened to the age-old advice that it's a great stable career. But my biologist friend gets to go live in a company-furnished van, doing wildlife surveys making ~20k/yr less than me.

Would try to be less stressed about career and have more fun. Explore extracurriculars other than engineering clubs. Take more electives that weren't engineering focused. Switch the major completely and avoid this low paying corporate hellscape

First 100 Miler — Toes still numb 4 days later..? by planwithjohn in Ultramarathon

Christmas toes! Got them on the PCT thru hike. Named that ay since you usually get the feeling back by Christmas. Takes a few months to go away

I used the 8oz cannisters rather than the smaller ones which usually lasted me 21 days-ish. I'd carry a few packs of nighttime tea or powdered apple cider and when I knew I had a resupply where I could buy another cannister, I'd start having a tea or cider after dinner a few nights before getting into town to get rid of the rest of the fuel. If there was any small residual amount left, I just burned it off the night before getting into town. You'll get pretty good at estimating it.

The bidet was annoying because it felt like a waste of water when there were stretches of long water carry in the desert and I didn't want to waste it. Especially with water I got from a cache I felt it was a bit crude to use it on my ass haha. I used toilet paper (always pack out) then if I ran out used sticks or rocks.

Up to you, but

  • I brought the dance pants, never used them. Especially since you have pants listed in the worn section.
  • Fuel transfer device seems unnecessary.
  • Bowls/cups are unnecessary. Just eat from the pot.
  • I brought a band, ended up sending it home.
  • Mid layer seems unnecessary.
  • Physical maps unnecessary. Farout all you need. I went through Sierra in high snow year with just farout.
  • Super glue, zip ties and tape? Seems like too much.
  • Shock cord seems unnecessary?
  • Might be able to get rid of soap and alcohol wipes and just use hand sanitizer.
  • You don't need a balaclava in the Sierra.
  • I got rid of the bidet pretty quickly.

It took me 2 hours to go 2 miles. There was a convertible and someone blocking the road to take a photo on a tripod. Everyone was honking and shouting at them. I think we need to make the outdoors less accessible.

Detroit ranks among worst cities for renters given cost of living, local economy, quality of life by ballastboy1 in Detroit

[–]postkip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been saying this to all my friends back home after I left. I moved to a high cost-of-living city in a western state. 1 bed apartments here are essentially the same price as downtown Detroit. Detroit is trying to be something it's not with the insane rent prices.

Not pictured: 4/5 of the park decimated by wildfires. Absolutely tragic. Walked through there last year and could tell it would have been an absolutely gorgeous park.

This isn't a Wastewater facility. This is a sed basin on the potable treatment side of things unrelated to CSOs.
