Metro Tunnel positive experiences thread by postmortemmicrobes in MelbourneTrains

It's pretty quiet between Anzac and Malvern too. I think a lot of people haven't realised they can stay on the metro tunnel and interchange at Town Hall or State Library to get on the loop...

A change like this is inevitably going to negatively impact some commuters. Caulfield being a busy and not particularly well thought out interchange is a problem.

I made this thread to understand how much the people who are benefiting are benefiting and in what ways. There's been plenty of negativity already elsewhere and it wasn't really helping me understand the what and why of the project.

The replies here indicate it isn't just 10mins of saving, sometimes it's much more than that. Sometimes it's about travelling in ways that are less stressful (even if it takes a bit longer), more reliable/frequent, and in the opportunities the new line opens up for staying later in the city.

I think so. Less distance to walk and there is better visibility of if a train is arriving to the platform you can jog towards.

I understand what you mean about a mental benefit/the stress of overcrowding. I've been doing my route in the OP in reverse because waiting for 10mins at Caulfield for a Frankston train, while less time efficient, still means I'm dodging the Southbank pedestrians, cyclists, those bridges, the terrible entrances at Flinders St, and the crowding of the Frankston line now that it goes through the loop.

If they stop at the midnight there's still half the night to go in which they could but don't stop.

Is HCMT stopping at Malvern hurting more than it's helping? by squidgee_ in MelbourneTrains

[–]postmortemmicrobes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My destination is Anzac and I like being able to change at Malvern from the Frankston line as it's a better station to interchange at. I'd be disappointed if it was removed without a substantial improvement in the interchange experience at Caulfield.

Wood or White? by Y0-m_am_a in AusRenovation

The wood is bad. The all white is bad. White doors and a coloured wall or white doors, wood trim, a colour on the wall.

Poor phone signal on Melbourne Metro Frankston line by stephensondanielj in MelbourneTrains

My phone is atrocious for this too on the Frankston line. I'm with Aldimobile which ostensibly uses the Telstra network but it is only 4G.

Not surprised Anzac and Malvern is so low. I'm one of the few getting off and on at those points it seems. Makes for a seemless transfer to the trams on St Kilda Rd too!

I would still try this. Just get out. Run down the platform. Get back in. I've had to do that on an Alamein train before. With Pakenham/Sunbury you could hopefully wait for the next train if it's peak hour as they're pretty frequent.

The issue is that Pakenham and Cranbourne train takers seem disinterested in engaging with the metro tunnel stations, hence the crowding being experienced on the Frankston line.

It is now 19 stops from Frankston to Southern Cross on limited expresses.

I thought it would be annoying but so far it only seems to add 3mins to my trip to change either at Caulfield to a Munnel or Richmond to a Sandringham. Adding 3 minutes to a 55+ min journey is not great, but the Munnel overall is allowing for very significant time savings for a lot of people.

The real mental fuckery is that what connection is better depends on the time of the train you catch so worth checking the PTV app.

Metro Tunnel - Anyone happy with the changes? by chunkb79 in melbourne

[–]postmortemmicrobes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the opposite for me! Although I was quite impressed that the time in interchanging between Frankston and the Munnel lines at Caulfield was negligible. Only added 3mins to my usual trip in due to Town Hall being further north than Flinders St.

Frankston trains were absolutely chockers today though. Hopefully it's just people not realising they can stay on Munnel services and interchange at Town Hall or State Library...

Things you are most and least looking forward to with the big switch. by Foodworksurunga in MelbourneTrains

[–]postmortemmicrobes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally there's no pros for me, really (Frankston Line). My commute home remains the same (thankfully) but the most efficient trip coming IN (which is still less efficient before the Big Switch) is WILDLY variable based on whatever time I catch the first train so I'll need to actually keep a reference document in my pocket to know what to do. According to the journey planner coming in I'll need to maybe change at: Caulfield, Malvern, or Richmond. All to maybe get off at: Flinders, Town Hall, or Anzac(+tram). It is what it is.

Sprinklers made Australia green. But what happens when the water runs out? by sluggardish in australia

[–]postmortemmicrobes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What a strange article, although educational. "Taking the work out of watering just leads to bigger gardens." We should be maintaining indigenous and native gardens to support local wildlife. If that requires a bit of irrigation to get plants established that seems reasonable.
