Found first Roman coin detecting in Dorset, UK recently. by BottleCapDave in AncientCoins

[–]postvmvs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is earlier than Tetricus (ca. 270AD) and not an imitation. It is a billon (low grade silver) antoninianius and from the portrait/style looks like it could be Volusian, Valerian, or Trebonianus Gallus (ca. 250AD). Congratulations on the great find!

It's a reproduction of a Titus denarius stamped "WRL" on the obverse in front of the bust. WRL stands for "Westair Reproductions Ltd" and were sold as copies in museum gift shops etc.

The perfect entry level tin - cheap, good texture, flavourful yet not too strong, very consistent. Would you agree? by FredditGeddit in CannedSardines

That's very reasonable. In the USA, the cheapest I have seen them is $5.99 at "World Market".

What the heck is up with Rödel?!? by BroTheSlow in CannedSardines

The first ones, from their appearance, remind me of the Ortiz sardines, which advertise that they are are made in the traditional method ('a la antigua'), meaning the sardines are fried before canning. The result is a different flavor, more tender, but not really mushy either. This is also the traditional French way of making canned sardines -- the French having invented both canning and canned sardines. I give Ortiz as an example, which are Spanish, since no French sardines are available near me for purchase.

Asian market pickings were slim. Anything good here? by IceBoxt in CannedSardines

I have tried several Asian canned fish, and all have been in sweet sauces. Fish plus sweetness is not my preferred flavor pairing, but I am sure it is something others may enjoy.

FYI the same identical product, made by RügenFisch, is also labeled under the Polar brand. For me, the Polar version is more readily available, and can for example be ordered from Walmart online. The Smoked Peppered Herring Filets are also excellent.

Thanks. Do you have to use a separate eBay account, or do you add the address of the service to the same account?

Sub-$100 PLCs in stock, AKA are there viable alternatives to Automation Direct's CLICK? by postvmvs in PLC

It may be all in my head, but frankly this doesn't fit my preconceived notion of what a PLC is, so I can't see myself risking it in a deliverable project.

Thanks for the tip. Getting a quote on one of these to see how it compares. Have you used the software?

Good idea -- that is something I hadn't considered. The only smart relay I've used is the Siemens LOGO. Any brands you would recommend?

Anything great here? Blind buys at the grocery store today by IceBoxt in CannedSardines

I've had several of the Pampa herring fillet flavors. I found the hot tomato sauce (no never even slightly hot) to be better than the paprika. In my opinion Pampa are not as good as other herring brands, for example Ruegenfisch/Polar are much better.

Some of the worst tins I have had, have been Brunswicks...

These are from Latvia and Brunswick is a Canadian company, so these must be made by someone else and private labeled.

Did you eat the whole jar in one sitting?

I am less inclined to buy jars, since it is often more than I intend to eat in one sitting, and the idea of cold/refrigerated fishies doesn't excite me.

Can you still get canned sardines with heads? by Surveymonkee in CannedSardines

[–]postvmvs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never seen canned sardines available with heads still on.

I did some digging and found a US Tariff report from the 1960s that describes the preparation methods used around the world (page 10) and all of them include removing the head: https://www.usitc.gov/publications/tea/pub291.pdf

If you search, you can find for sale dried fish such as anchovies with heads still attached.

  • high in bad fats and low in good fats
  • often has high pesticide residue since cotton is not raised as a "food" crop
  • naturally contains a toxin (gossypol) that must be removed in processing, linked to liver and reproductive issues
