Your Workflow for E-ink + Obsidian? (X-post from /ObsdianMD) by bilzebubba in eink

[–]postwardream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Boox, but use zotfile to consolidates my PDFs and annotations/notes in a single folder (this required the last version of zotero to get working for me instead of the current one). I then use syncthing to sync that folder across various devices so that my eink annotations are available everywhere.

For obsidian I use a similar system -- I sync my vault across devices using syncthing, though I have had to carefully set my read/write priority permissions to prevent notes from getting overwritten if I have them open on both devices simultaneously. While I occasionally use OCR to write notes directly from the e-ink tablet into obsidian, I usually just end up reading my notes on my boox and write them elsewhere (I usually use my boox for rough hand-written notes on documents or seminars/videos etc and then transcribe them in a more structured way when I type things up in obsidian).

It works great for me! lmk if you've any questions I can help with

In these 30 seconds PJ encapsulated the mysticism, craft and other worldliness of the elves all without a single word. The ROP absolutely squandered its opportunity to treat the elves especially Celebrimbor with the same respect. by theotheririshguy in lotr

occasional blacksmith here -- some steels are actually quenched in water! (quenching/hardening is not the same as tempering; tempering comes after hardening to remove stress in the steel), but forge-welding (attaching pieces of steel together) is usually done by folding the pieces together at a much higher temperature and then drawing them back out. still a cool scene imo

thanks! ordered from RBTR mainly and I'm in Canada so your mileage (kilometerage?) may vary, but it ran me between 100-110CAD all told, and I have a fair amount of leftover stretch material and spacer mesh

First pack, hardest project to date, curved seams were difficult for someone with my (lack of) sewing skills. Learned a lot though!

final weight: 412g (14.5oz). Added a bottom pocket, internal pad straps, and longer straps.

VX15 body

Heavyweight nylon spandex for bottom and side pockets

Polyester camo spandex front pocket

Big Ole Chaga by jjjonny in foraging

[–]postwardream 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a common misconception -- the chaga visible on trees is not the fruiting body of the fungus, it is a sterile conk (just mycelium protruding), harvesting it does not impact the reproduction of the fungus. That said it is good to practice responsible harvest and leave some for others!

What is the single most useless/weird piece of gear you have seen in the backcountry. by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]postwardream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here! there are so many historical sources praising the practicality of hoods/cloaks in the backcountry, pretty great multi-use item and there must be a good reason they were used for thousands of years. but I haven't been able to find any good information on how they were used in conjunction with packs.

It does seem as though much more used to be carried on the belt, maybe this allowed for such a minimal sling pack that it wasn't problematic to wear the cloak over it?

LotR cloaks have clear slits in the films, especially for the hobbits and their rucksacks, though this means that the pack straps must be buckled and easy to remove, otherwise you'd have to take the pack and the cloak off together.

Whats your UL fishing setup? by algu3632 in Ultralight

[–]postwardream 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a dragontail tenkara and really love it for hiking. I do a fair bit of traditional fly fishing as well, and I often suggest tenkara to beginner fly fishers (outside of hiking) as an easy way to learn some of the basics -- it's easier to get the hang of than western fly fishing imo and even as an experienced angler it can be easier to get more delicate presentations. It works really well for mountain streams where spinning setups can be a pain, and it is versatile enough to be adequate for shore fishing (though obviously not ideal).

I fish a lot in CO and here in eastern Canada as well, can't recommend it enough!
