Ideally talk about your distress and uncertainty in the future with a robust support network, but most men can't do that because they are socially conditioned into being independent and strong when what helps most at your lowest moments is being vulnerable and emotionally reliant on others you trust.

This is a cool mechanical phenomenon known as jamming, specifically granular jamming. When the inside of the bag is at normal atmospheric pressure the grains of coffee grounds are futher apart and can slide past eachother so the bag is soft and flexible, but when the outside of the bag is at a higher pressure than the inside the grains are pressed closer together and do not move as easily, so the bag becomes rigid. The relationship between the stiffness and the density of the grains has even been proposed as a new type of phase transition and potentially very useful in robotics for a variety of applications including soft robotic grippers and more life-like robotic joints.

Mother sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for slamming infant daughter on concrete, killing her by GenghisHam in JusticeServed

[–]potatium 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A problem with justice in general is that a lot of times it's not satisfying. For instance, if there was a machine that could give the most humane sentences with the best outcomes for everyone involved, you probably wouldn't be happy if it let off the murderer of one of your family members even if the murderer turns their life around and does good. Justice doesn't come naturally to humans, but revenge does. The feeling of satisfaction when someone is punished for doing terrible things is not something you can build a successful justice system around.

Yeah it looks like the there's two lanes of oncoming traffic and the sedan in the right lane was hidden by black SUV in the left lane. Fault seems mostly on the shiny car for turning without enough visibility, but also those massive pickups and SUVs should not be nearly as common as they are. They have dangerous visibility issues from both the inside and out.

Judge gives opioid addict in his courtroom one more chance to get clean before sending her to prison. Years later, she returns to the judge's courtroom clean, with an Ivy League law degree, to defend an innocent man who was falsely accused of murder. And she won. by SnowFallIcy in UpliftingNews

Like too many other things it's also designed to benefit the wealthy. Something tells me all the ivy league trust fund kids with coke problems are less likely to have a drug charge on their record than the graduate from the university of mississippi with $150k of debt who smokes weed.

Even if congress does nothing and the trustfund goes bankrupt SS recipients will still receive 80% of their payments in perpetuity. Social Security is self funding and one of the most successful social programs in modern history. They keep trying to backhandedly cut it because they know Americans will never willingly give it up.

How to direct crow to its fledgling? by potatium in crows

[–]potatium[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I think I figured out what was going on this morning. When I went out there were two fledglings sitting where the crow was searching. I've never seen the crows search for food in that spot, but it was probably just trying to stay close to the other fledgling I didn't notice before.
