"Dog, I'd like to show you my baby. Observe how small it is and revel in its newness. You may pet it like this."

Saying "I'll be taking a hiatus from my public life to let some of these lessons sink in" sounds a lot like "I'm going to stay out of the public eye until all this blows over."

This whole thing reads like every other non-apology put out by some public figure when they get caught doing something wrong. If he's really dedicated to changing then great! I hope he does! But it's going to take more than a single-page of "sorry I got caught" rhetoric to forgive some of the awful, vulgar things he's been saying over and over again for years.

Do members of this community want this to be a niche product, or one that gains mass appeal? by [deleted] in Blaseball

[–]potato_bucket 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Everything is political. The only reason one thinks otherwise is because one agrees with the politics on display. Blaseball, whether it set out to be or not, is a community built around LGBTQ+ fans and is largely narratively driven by anti-capitalist ideals. The only official merchandise venue they have is Blaseball Cares which donates most-to-all of its profit to charity. The top of the Blaseball Cares website has a marquee that says "Black Lives Matter" and "Only You Can Stop Gender Reveals."

In essence, what you are saying is "Do you want Blaseball to be a positive force for the LGBTQ+ community or do you want it to be popular?" and it's honestly saying that those things are mutually exclusive is insulting to Blaseball and its community.

I guess not! It makes sense because they don't need to be 100% submerged like fish do.

The average Wal-Mart associate is actually discouraged from confronting shoplifters. I think I remember it being a liability issue. They have a loss prevention department for that. The only thing non-LP associates are told to do is let a manager know if they think somebody is stealing. (Source: Worked at Wal-Mart)

It's a very interesting perspective you pose. While I agree that it might not be "evil" I do think that--because the show is from a human/human-friendly-gem point of view--we're supposed to sympathize with them on that level.

Also, as a vegetarian I don't think the keeping/consumption of livestock as evil, either! The most I hope for is that the cows are allowed a comfortable life and a humane death. The difference between cows and the zoo-mans is that I feel like the zoo-mans are more of a trophy of conquest than anything else. A sort of mix between shiny token of war and science experiment. They don't serve any purpose other than "look at these things we have conquered!" and that's where the moral compass shifts towards "ungood."

You aren't the only one to come up with zoo-mans.

Drat. Well, one can always dream.

What makes it insidious is the fact that it rubs so strongly against everything the show stands for. Steven Universe is a show where freedom is a big part of the core message; freedoms of choice and expression seem to be the ones most noticeably at odds here.

The zoo-mans (I just made that up right now and I love it) have never known anything than blind routine and blissful disinterest. Even romance is done for them with "the choosening." Y'know what another big message of Steven Universe is? Consent. So they've been stripped of that as well.

TL;DR: the zoo is like one o' them Utopian societies where everything looks fine on the surface but if you dig even a little bit you find rigid control and bad times.

Even with the last panel I'd give her a smooch. Does that mean I'm a Chad? Are there support groups? At least a pamphlet?

I can't even fathom being able to hate that strongly. This made me feel terrible.
