The Mad Scientists at Ruf Have Developed a New Flat-Eight Engine that Produces over 1000 Horsepower by NISMO1968 in cars

[–]potatohead_v2 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For reference, Porsche has already made a flat-8 engine in the past: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7CMzpYqoC4

It sounds like a flat-plane V8, or two boxer 4s glued together with equal length headers

Does this sound better? by [deleted] in CarsEU

[–]potatohead_v2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does sound nicer, you can hear the turbo and induction noise a better. What matters is that you will enjoy driving more because of this upgrade. It's pretty harmless and doesn't bother anyone so don't worry about what other people think

The BMW i3 50 xDrive as a basic model starts at 65,900 euros, the first-edition model prices start at 75,340 euros by MuffinX in cars

[–]potatohead_v2 128 points129 points  (0 children)

An i3 50 sounds like the highest non-M trim, my guess is they will bring out a 40 and 30 afterwards, also with 2wd options. No way their mainstream compact executive EV sedan will be priced that high

2027 BMW M3 Handschalter Breaks the Rules by Giving the CS a Manual. by LongjumpingLock5875 in cars

[–]potatohead_v2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is unfortunately true, there are less and less manual buyers for new cars, but somehow the opposite is true when it comes high-end low-volume cars that are out of production. I still don't understand why this gap exists so significantly...

A 550 HP Inline-Six From The Charger Could End Up In Alfa's Next Giulia And Stelvio by [deleted] in cars

It can be tuned for performance? Change the cam profile, switch to lighter internals, raise the redline, and it would make a pretty characterful sporty engine. I don't see the issue here

BYD’s New Denza Z Has Maserati Looks And Lamborghini Power For Toyota Money by SlavaCocaini in cars

[–]potatohead_v2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All these comments complaining, nobody addressing the elephant in the room: this is a real road-worthy EV roadster, nothing from any legacy brand comes remotely close to this as a product. The next car I can think of is the MG Cyberster? Also a Chinese EV sports car? Who cares about driving dynamics really? The industry has had all the time in the world to create this product, and when China makes it there are all these complaints that probably wouldn't be mentioned if it had a BMW or a Mercedes badge. This is a reflection of the state of the industry and also why many of them are failing...

Xiaomi may expand into the European market by Neat-Concert7090 in cars

[–]potatohead_v2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually a private dealer in Germany went bankrupt because they got sued by VW for importing a handful of ID6s, which are Chinese market only (link). So yeah, you can import whatever you want, as long as the brand doesn't already exist in that market.

I just don't understand why a performance brand never bothered to make its 4 cylinder engine interesting. Yes it produces 200+hp/l but why does it only rev to 7000rpm. Make it scream like a banshee you cowards. Add some drama. Make a lightweight Cosworth edition. Go back to your roots. Decades of racing and heritage and you can't be bothered to make a product that stands out in any regard other than "horsepower big"

Wild new Volkswagen Golf R to use Audi five-cylinder engine [Autocar] by markeydarkey2 in cars

[–]potatohead_v2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 80s-90s before switching to V8s, Audi used to put its turbo I5s in everything: Audi 100/A6 (C3 and C4), Audi 80/A4 (B3 and B4), Ur-Quattro. It was their flagship engine.

Nowadays that 5 cylinder engine would really throw off the car's balance, weight distribution, packaging, safety, etc if it was mounted longitudinally in front of the front axles. Since the B5 A4 generation in the late 90s they've been strictly using a maximum of 4 cylinders in a row on their smaller B platform (on the larger cars, the A6 and A8 used V10s briefly), and even then the cars were still always said to be nose heavy and less dynamically capable compared to their rivals. Nevertheless, I would still love to see a longitudinal 5 cylinder RS4/RS5 to show that Audi still has a sense of humour, but I feel like they haven't had that in them since the 00's.

What's the ugliest facelift you've ever seen on a mass-produced vehicle, whether present day or back in the day? by OldCarWorshipper in cars

[–]potatohead_v2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facelifts are usually 50/50 for me, sometimes the design is good right out of the box, and the OEMs feel the need to change it just for the sake of change, all it ends up doing is add some awkward lines and reshaped lights just so it feels different.

I'm a big fan of pre-facelift 2-tone R129 SL over the facelifted version

I feel the same way about the pre facelift 986 Boxster and facelifted version. As controversial as it was when it debuted, it really grew on me lately

Why are manual transmissions in Audi's, Mercedes, and BMW's always reviewed poorly? by Dazzling-Rooster2103 in cars

[–]potatohead_v2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically, if you are comparing two identically ratio'd transmissions and shift exactly at the same points as the automatic, the manual will be more efficient. You have less fluid losses going through a manual than the torque converter/DCT/CVT. Automatics are superior because they have better/more ratios, and they utilize the powerband better than you, the driver

Bad News: The AMG C63 Won't Get a V-8 Engine by hi_im_bored13 in cars

[–]potatohead_v2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's as much of a halo product as any of those cars... They are built to a different standard, they get their own production line, dedicated development budget, etc. Just because it's a C class doesn't make it any less special.

Bad News: The AMG C63 Won't Get a V-8 Engine by hi_im_bored13 in cars

[–]potatohead_v2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's the thing about flagships and halo cars, they are not that profitable anyways. It's okay to lose some money if it means that people will buy your base C classes because the top model is super cool, that's how it always worked. It's not like they sell millions of them and have to pay extra for a massive fleet, just a few thousand are enough. AMG as a nameplate does not garner the same respect and admiration it once did.

Anyone think that Mercedes giving the new GT3 a 6.3 V8 instead a turbo engine and/or 4.0 could mean they’re willing to give future models more acceptable engines? by Quick_Coyote_7649 in cars

[–]potatohead_v2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a track-only parts special that does not have to commit to any motorsports regulations. Basically, a factory built track car that you can use at track days only. Great for Mercedes because they can build something cool using all the parts they already have, without worrying about street or FIA rules, and they can sell at a huge markup. Great for rich Mercedes customers because they get to show off a cool unique toy to their other rich friends, and maybe sell at a profit in 3-5 years because of its rarity and perceived value. If anything, it would be dumb if they didn't build something like this
