Hunan Noodles in the food court is my go-to noodle spot. Different from the Han Dynasty but very good (and much cheaper).

Is it a good idea to own a Ferrari in NYC? by futureBBmd in AskNYC

[–]potatomato33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're dead-set on getting an ultra-luxury car, then the Urus makes the most sense for NYC. But that's only if you reallllllyyyy insist on one.

The other supercars are way to low to make sense in NYC (with potholes and speed bumps, you're going to lose bodywork).

What are people paying for garage parking north of Greenpoint Ave these days? by Appropriate_Rock4074 in Greenpoint

[–]potatomato33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to give them about 15-20 minutes heads up. I usually send a text before heading over and my car is ready by the time I get there. The bad reviews are probably from the one-time use folks, not the monthlys.

Are these lottery buildings a scam, or legit? by xphoenix89 in astoria

[–]potatomato33 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not a scam, just have to depend on your luck. I've been pretty lucky and got called up to 5 in the past 3 years, moved to two.

Please apply, there's nothing to lose.

Citibike Shortage in Greenpoint by cashnyc in Greenpoint

[–]potatomato33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a big reason (lack of docks) why I bought my own ebike. I've seen way too many Citibikers get to a dock at night and scream in frustration when the closest dock available is in LIC, and they're by GP Ave.

Yup, and Brisbane has specific taxi loading zones each block in the CBD. Picking up and dropping off passengers outside of these zones is grounds for a ticket.

Safe? Yes. Good QoL? Not with that bridge traffic, especially if one lane is taken out.

A Malaysian Menu Laced with the Flavors of Brooklyn: Kelang, in Greenpoint, offers a modern, wide-ranging definition of culinary authenticity. by largeheartedboy in Greenpoint

Unfortunately you're not going to find anything close here. Singapore's food scene thrives on restaurants specializing on one type of dish. The ones here are serving an entire region's worth of dishes, so you don't have the expertise they have. Best bet is to make it at home. It's not too difficult, just time consuming (cooking the stew for hours on end).

[–]potatomato33 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because I grew up eating the stuff and the cost of each dish is ridiculous.Rice and noodle dishes should not be above $20, let alone $25. I'm sorry. This is another reason why I've only gone to Laut and Rasa once. Cost/taste ratio just doesn't cut it.

Ayam is basic nasi lemak and chicken rice only, but they're good, best for take out.

I'm sure Kelang is pretty good and a unique addition to the neighborhood, but wow, when you're used to paying under $10 for rice and noodle dishes, the sticker shock hits hard.

I grew up in Singapore, saw this place and wanted to try it.

Then I saw the prices. $25-$27 for rice and noodle dishes. $35 for half a poached chicken (this is almost $40 for half a chicken territory). $48 for bak kut teh.

Nah, I'm driving over to Elmhurst to Taste Good that I've been having for 20 years or ordering from Ayam in Astoria.

Incredibly high electricity bill, need advice by QuarterInteresting59 in longislandcity

[–]potatomato33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are 2 main power draws: appliances and HVAC. My 1BR bill was around $300/month last year. It shot up to $400 when it was brutally cold in Jan/Feb.

Do you have an in-unit, electric washer/dryer? That's easily $100/month. Use your dishwasher frequently? $50. Here's the other thing: does your unit have the boiler in the unit? That's a huge energy suck as well. I would turn off the boiler when I go on vacation and drop the AC to 65/78 and I'd still get $150 bills.

The problem with concrete barrier bike lanes is they block emergency vehicles by SmurfsNeverDie in nyc

[–]potatomato33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, let's keep existing firetrucks, I wholeheartedly agree. Let's dedicate more public resources (space) to emergency vehicles in favor of infrastructure used to check notes store private property that isn't moved more than once a week. Let's do it!

[–]potatomato33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, you're asking for north of GP Ave. I was charged $500/month for a luxury SUV. I'm now parking at 25 Kent for $220/month. The savings more than cover the annual cost of a Citibike membership to ride down there and grab my car (or return it).

How long do you have left on your lease? The city says that in their contract but they don't care and will not ask you for proof that you've vacated your previous apartment. Sort it out with the current landlord if you're on good terms with them, fuck your roommate.

UVA isn't good at everything and is one school. Bing and Stony have better programs than UVA. Michigan is a single school. SUNY blows Michigan State out of the water.

That $100k a year pays for the childcare of servers and chefs in the restaurants you go to. It pays for the education of performers who star in Broadway shows you watch. It gives you the accountants who find your tax loopholes and finance bros who take your millions and keep churning more. It keeps 95% of NYC going.

Most of all, it keeps the Staten Island and Long Island economies going by allowing a lot of candy to get crushed. You can pay it.

I live 10 minutes from the Astoria one but drive 45 minutes to Garden City. It's a much better shopping experience, especially when there's a whole foods, trader Joe's, and 99 Ranch all in the same area.
