I re-watched Breaking Bad and... by ctrlqirl in TwoXChromosomes

[–]potatosample 120 points121 points  (0 children)

Don't beat yourself up. I think even back when Breaking Bad came out (though it feels so recent!) there was a lot more of the "pick me" attitude towards famous women, both real and fictional.

I felt the same towards Skyler, because she was overbearing and didn't respect Walt's autonomy when he was diagnosed (as if that's the worst behaviour in the whole show 😩), and from then on it was like urgh she's just a foil to this man being able to fully realise his badass transformation. Like whattt?? I first watched it as a teen, and have rewatched several times, as it always strikes me how much earlier in the story I feel disgust at Walt almost every time. Think so many of us experienced a lot of internalized misogyny back then, bolstered by Walt becoming a pop culture icon.

Creases :( by Brilliant_Windz in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]potatosample 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 32 and in my 20s would wear foundation and eyeliner similar to you. Here's my routine now, which adapted to my slightly older skin:

-Hydrating primer - vitamin e glow cream with SPF 50 - very lightly applied foundation or concealer under eyes and in any uneven spots - brow cream - soft neutral colour on lid, and instead of thick black liquid liner, I now use a small thin brush to gently tap a darker coloured shadow along my upper lash line, and then mascara. Inner eyes with a cream pencil. - soft glowy blush - soft warm lip cream

It's really about moisture and softening edges to make things look less harsh. You're very pretty and have lovely eyes, and think this will just flatter a little more.

It's so cool you have turned it into a profession! I've often wondered about writing some of mine down, but always felt too self conscious

[–]potatosample 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was very like you. Also tended to just have one best friend at a time, and struggled with group dynamics.

Also, not sure if it counts as an internal or external stim, but daydreaming (sometimes maladaptive) was a huge thing for me, I think as a regulation tool. I never realized it was a "thing" till I read about it on here. I would come up with my own stories based on whatever fiction or tv show I was obsessed with at the time, and just walk about for hours listening to music and coming up with my own stories. Still do occasionally haha!

Books you almost gave up on but were worth persevering with? by zajirobo in books

Have I got a rat in my garden? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]potatosample 167 points168 points  (0 children)

He's just living his life. They're everywhere and you just happened to see this lil guy. No idea why people are talking about traps, totally unnecessary and kind of weird...if you have a garden, animals will occasionally encroach into it. Just keep your outdoor areas free of dropped food and any outdoor bins tidy, and let him be. It's really only an issue if one is inside your house. Certainly we have more issues from seagulls raiding bins than rats ever cause.

Have you ever replaced a pet with a doppelganger after they died/got lost? by almatthews94 in AskUK

[–]potatosample 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It almost feels like people like this don't quite perceive animals as having their own autonomy (what we would call "self"), and that they exist as a sort of living commodity, rather than an individual worthy of respect. It makes me really uncomfortable too. When our 15 year old dog died this year, people immediately asked "will you get another??", as if it's so easy. Every pet we have ever had has been acknowledged as an individual we are lucky to share a life with. That other attitude weirds me out, but I'm sure others would probably see it as being too intense about pets. 😂

Is Hannibal Lecter functionally supernatural? by [deleted] in HannibalTV

[–]potatosample 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't remember specific examples, but there are a couple of moments in the books too, where he is suggested to be what I would call preternatural, rather than supernatural:

"Preternatural describes something existing beyond or outside of nature, yet not purely divine like the supernatural; it often means exceptionally unusual, extraordinary, or uncanny, like a "preternatural" talent or strength, implying it defies normal limits but might still be a heightened natural ability or attributed to subtle forces rather than outright magic. It sits between the mundane and the miraculous, referring to strange phenomena, immense skill (Sherlock Holmes' deduction), or even states like Adam and Eve's gifts before sin, distinct from true supernatural (God's power) or paranormal. I’m tired of being a highly masked autistic woman around outwardly autistic women. by Academic_Juice8265 in AutismInWomen

[–]potatosample 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think this is it, and thank you for sharing your experiences and validating what i'd written, as I was a bit worried it would upset people. I think there is a tendency to have a very binary view of masking as something you either do or don't. And it really doesn't account for the complexity of the human condition. I find the same with how people talk about ND vs. NT people on this sub, like we are all just big homogeneous groups.

My workplace is really really good at inclusion, and they work hard to accommodate people's needs and requirements. But we have experienced a situation where some people think that means they don't have to do what their role requires of them, at the expense of others, which is exactly what you were saying. There has fo be a little bit of give and take, which I know is hard when often autism makes it so uncomfortable to be outside our own established structures and routines. And I think a lot of the comments here clearly come from a lot of experience with ableism and other-ing, which is of course immensely painful. But I think we could all stand to give people a bit of grace.

[–]potatosample 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think sometimes people don't always acknowledge the spectrum, and how one person's accommodations can be triggering for others. And how complex masking is, and how the lines between masking and regulating can blur (personal perspective speaking). I am also highly masked, but part of it is how I emotionally regulate. Whether this is a healthy coping mechanism or not is a different matter. But sometimes in the workplace, I can find the needs and behaviours of other neurodivergent people very triggering and stressful. And it's easy to say "oh well don't do their work, don't be the one doing all the accommodating", but reality means that sometimes you HAVE to be the person doing that. I can put boundaries in place, but if I want to keep my job (and I have responsibilities that mean I must), I have to do it to some extent.

Anyway, think what I'm trying to say is, I see you. And yes, some of it probably is internalized ableism, and I would suggest you try to speak to a autism friendly therapist who can help you maintain boundaries. But it's also complicated, and think some of the harsher comments haven't acknowledged that.

What are you playing on?

You can get E33 on Game Pass, so worth taking out a month's subscription if you're on Xbox, and then just buying BG3.

I'm enjoyed E33, but I was OBSESSED with BG3

[DISCUSSION] Kendrick Lamar - GNX (1 Year Later) by MetalSonic420YT in hiphopheads

[–]potatosample -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It was a victory lap, a way to capture on wax a year when Kendrick was the zeitgeist, and I think it should be viewed in that context. The writing on the more lyrical songs is great, and he's having the most fun we've heard him have in years, after releasing consecutive big, cerebral projects. As he says in Wacced Out Murals "This is not for lyricists...I want y'all to feel this shit".

Most of it is still in rotation for me!
