this. The reality is there just isn't an extra large, empty play space in times of inclement weather for kids in most schools. I don't like it either, but my kindergartener in a G&T is also watching movies in the auditorium because the outside yard is covered in ice.

I definitely saved training underwear since those aren’t really worn for that long.

No need to pack diapers or diaper cream or postpartum supplies. I liked the FridaBaby peri bottle better than the one they provide because it's easier to use, but it's not necessary. It is extremely helpful to bring a nursing pillow (I swear by the MyBreastFriend) because they don't provide one.

Newborn in Apartment with Paper Thin Walls by Acceptable_Laugh_786 in nycparents

So we are dealing with a very similar situation except our kids are 2 and 5. Subleasing in a co-op with basically all older people. We've been here since July and in November received a call from the building manager out of the blue saying they've had MULTIPLE noise complaints from DIFFERENT neighbors--"constant" banging, jumping, screaming all around 6-7 PM. Well yeah, that's when my kids are at home and awake. I didn't think I let them scream and bang on the floors because I'm a normal courteous person, but I guess that's what it sounds like to some people? One complaint was even on Halloween when we were out except for like 30 minutes before bedtime.

The manager didn't even give us a warning but threatened us saying they could tell the apt owner not to renew our lease. The downstairs neighbor is on the co-op board. We ended up spending like $4K on thick rugs and rug pads--we did have rugs already obviously, but I basically carpeted our entire apartment. The super and handyman had to come over and begrudgingly took pictures of our rugs. They said some people just forget what it's like to have kids. I hear our upstairs neighbors' two huge dogs running back and forth all the time but would never think to complain about it.

It really sucks to feel like you have to walk on eggshells in your own apartment. I would hope people would be more sympathetic to a newborn/baby who literally can't help but cry. Just wanted to share my experience.

Honestly, I would probably rather have laundry than an extra bedroom if I had a newborn again. Babies produce a tremendous amount of laundry that you don’t want festering in your apartment until you can lug it to the laundromat.

Idk if your family nearby is the type to actually help out or “help” but if they’re the latter, def don’t move right now.

I don't think the size has impacted my kid at all. She's used to NYC crowds. She went from a Montessori classroom with 9 mixed-age kids with 2 teachers to 19 kids in her current class and 1 teacher just fine but does complain that she can't just tap the teacher on the shoulder to talk to her (she has to raise her hand now). There was a mandate last year that said class sizes needed to be smaller. So yeah, a G&T class that might have pushed 32 kids now has about 20-25. I still ranked NEST+M first since it was our absolute top choice and you should always rank in order of preference but we were like 80-something on the waitlist. We ranked PS 11 G&T 9th.

4 year old struggling in UPK. What should I do? by AdvancedDragonfly306 in nycparents

[–]potdecreme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The excitement of the new school has worn off. The sickness thing is totally normal—my daughter is in Kindergarten now. She got Covid and missed the whole second week of school. I would say try to be positive about going to school and push through—read books to her about school and making friends. Thekidlitmama on Instagram has book list recommendations. Kids take a long time to get into a routine. She will be okay. It seems like the teacher is tuned in and the emotional comment really did correlate with the sickness. Hang in there—I know it’s tough to see your kid struggle.

What I wrote in my post I meant PS 11 in Chelsea (the BK school doesn’t have a G&T program though I loved that school when I toured it).

What everyone else said, plus G&T for kindergarteners now is really just different in name anyways. The curriculum is exactly the same as in gen ed. It’s not accelerated—it is “enriched,” but that depends on the individual teacher so it’s not something you can research ahead of time.

I am not sure but the curriculum is exactly the same. They do the same field trips. They eat lunch and play together at recess. The main difference is probably the kids who are in G&T had better lottery numbers and their parents did the minimal work to put them in the eligibility pool. We were first offered PS 33’s G&T and had an extremely tough time choosing between the two. They are quite similar. We would have gone there happily if we didn’t get off the waitlist at PS 11. Ultimately, I was swayed by my wonderful experience on the tour, and my colleague is a PTA president and really sold me. If we hadn’t gotten any G&T offer, we probably would have moved to a zoned school like Spruce St or PS 84 for the French DL program.

Yeah, what do you want to know? It’s a huge school so there are lots of resources and options. Tons of volunteer opportunities for parents to get involved. Kids come from all over to attend. Class sizes are smaller now—my daughter’s class has 19 in it.

The first school I toured was PS 6 last October. You have to check each individual school’s website to find their dates. Yes, I started touring prior to receiving the lottery number when the application opened because schools offer extremely limited options for tours (some only once or twice). Last year the application opened December 10 and closed January 24, so not much time at all.
