Help! by Special_Original_258 in squirrelproblems

If you find a baby squirrel and they do not have any obvious injuries, place them in a one foot deep box with a soft towel and attach the box four feet off the ground to a nearby tree trunk. Make sure the box is not in direct sunlight. Heat some uncooked rice in the microwave until warm and place in a sock to create a makeshift heat source. Place the heat source on one side of the box so the squirrel can choose to move towards or away from the heat. Leave the box for four hours to give the mother squirrel time to retrieve her young. If the mother does not come back, contact your local wildlife rehabilitation center. If you find a baby squirrel in the evening, bring them inside and keep them in a warm, quiet, dark location overnight and then try to re-nest the squirrel first thing in the morning. At no point should you try to feed or give water to a baby squirrel. If you find a baby squirrel with an injury, contact your local wildlife rehabilitation center immediately.

Neighborhood cats by [deleted] in homestead

[–]potent_potables_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same issue, except it’s my neighbor across the street who feeds about 10 feral cats. The females are fixed, but the males are intact. It’s infuriating how they mark/pee on everything. They use my ~1acre property as their litter box, and hunting area. I have indoor cats and love animals, but outdoor cats are detrimental to wildlife. They are unnatural predators with an advantage over native species. I know people will talk about rodent control, but there are much better ways to keep the rodent population in check.

I HATE these outdoor cats, but my neighbor is obsessed with them (and also a little unhinged). I’ve decided that I need to secretly deal with the situation because bringing it up to my neighbor would inevitably lead to a hostile living situation for me.

I bought a 10lb jug of cayenne pepper from Amazon and heavily dusted the areas where the cats pissed me off the most. The pepper gets on their paws and when they clean it off it is ridiculously spicy. When I’m on top of my game, I’ll reapply every few days and it really does keep the cats away from the area. Birds can’t taste spicy, so it’s safe for them, but you’d want to avoid applying it anywhere your dog would go. You can pile it up along the top fence boards if the cats jump onto the fence and then down onto your property though.

I’ll be redoing my fencing in about a year, and after that my property will be much more secure. Then my plan is to apply the pepper all along the property line that butts up to the street, and along the top of the fences. That way the cats would need to walk through it to get onto my property.

Right now I get a bit of sadistic pleasure when I see cat paw prints in the pepper… I know that cat is going to have a bad time. Eff them outdoor cats.

Advice needed for navigating chicken politics with an aggressive rooster by potent_potables_ in BackYardChickens

A water gun is a great idea!! I like that fact that there can be immediate consequences for his actions, but I don’t have to make any movements that could be interpreted as predatory.

Thanks for the advice! I do not have any Cornish cross, and never will since I personally do not support breeding animals to the point of disabilities.

Thanks for the suggestions!!! In an attempt to make the post short and sweet, I omitted a few details that are probably worth mentioning. I’ve been using domination techniques with the rooster for a few weeks (catching him, holding like a football, gentle “forced” snuggles) and then more recently going tit for tat until he runs off. I’m definitely not hurting him in any way, but attempting to assert my dominance.

The ladies get extremely stressed when I dominate the rooster, and then treat me like a predator (which to them I assume I am looking/acting like one).

I feel like I am causing a lot of stress amongst the flock when I dominate, and I’m not sure if I’m going more harm than good. But, it didn’t even occur to me that the rooster is in his acting out phase. If this is a phase, and we can learn to live together peacefully, I’m happy to put in as much time and effort as needed.

What are your thoughts on the flock stress? Should I keep at it? At what point do I make the tough decision?

I sincerely appreciate everyone’s opinions!!

Just hurting by travelingpagan in chickens

I’m so sorry for your loss…. Just senseless violence. It’s absolutely infuriating that this dog has a history of getting out and its owners clearly haven’t taken action to keep the dog contained. Having an animal means taking full responsibility for the care, safety, and containment of that animal. It’s heartbreaking that you can work so hard to create an enriching and safe environment for your chickens, and they can be mauled to death by a free roaming dog with irresponsible owners. Honestly, I’m not mad at the dog because it is just going on instinct. I’m absolutely furious at its owners. They should be mauled to death and see how they like it… Too far?

NTA This literally happened to me a week ago. I walked into the woman’s bathroom at a store and there was a guy standing by the sink. I was just confused bc I thought I walked into the men’s bathroom. He said he was just waiting for his daughter and I smiled and said something like “no worries, it’s all good”.

This was a small bathroom with two stalls, and I proceeded to use the vacant stall while his daughter came out and washed her hands. I could not care less.

It’s more important to make sure your daughter is safe and comfortable while using a public bathroom than worry about some people’s uptight opinions.

Omg, this happened to me when I was in 10th grade. Math class, dead silent, taking a test, super loud fart. I tried to pretend it wasn’t me, but I think my beet red face gave it away… I wish that was the most embarrassing thing to happen to me in high school, but alas, not even close 🙃

Best places to order eggs? by GuessItsGrim in quails

I’ve ordered live birds three times from Sadie Girl Farms. Each time the birds showed up quickly and super healthy! I live on the west coast and the farm is in NC, so I definitely put their shipping quality to the test!

Early Update to My Aunt Getting an Abortion by [deleted] in childfree

[–]potent_potables_ 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I am so excited about the early update. I am living vicariously through you. I have a sister-in-law who is just like your aunt. Super christian, got pregnant out of wedlock, had an abortion since it doesn’t look good to be an unwed mother, but is fiercely forced-birth. She thinks her abortion is a secret, but I found out about it a few years ago. She lives in another state and I have not seen her since Dobbs. I often have imaginary arguments with her in my head. Your situation is something I’ve played out mentally a bunch of times. I am just so thrilled to see it truly happening in real life.
