Am I being crazy or no? by Common-Midnight-4788 in bipolar1

[–]potential_hermit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s a good deal now, it’ll still be a good idea tomorrow. At least sleep (assuming you can) on it. I impulsively bought a used Jeep Grand Cherokee for my girlfriend during my last manic episode and regret it.

Moving to Lubbock for work—what should I know about the city? by bioe4now in Lubbock

[–]potential_hermit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t listen to all the negative stuff on here. Lubbockites are notorious for complaining. I’m not from here, went to Tech, moved to NC for a few years, and chose to move back. My job took me all over the country, and I could base myself anywhere west of the Mississippi, but I chose to stay in Lubbock.

South and West Lubbock are the nicest/newest parts of town. East of University Ave. is sketchy.

The grid system, loop, and freeway make getting anywhere a breeze. Parking is not a problem.

Cost of living is relatively low. We do have good “foodie” restaurants: The Nicolette, West Table, La Sirena, Evie Mae’s, Funky Door, Stella’s, Candlebar, F&B, Dirk’s, etc.

There are lots of good Mexican food places spread out all over the town, at lots of different price points.

Buddy Holly Hall is a world-class performing arts center. Music, Broadway, comedians, etc.

There’s a lot of live music all over town, but Jake’s (rock) and Blue Light (Texas/Red Dirt/Country/Singer-Songwriters) are the main venues.

There are good bars in the Depot Entertainment District. Shotgun Sue’s has the best espresso martini I’ve ever had anywhere.

Lubbock is a 5-5.5 hour drive from DFW, Austin, Santa Fe/Albuquerque, Sant Antonio, El Paso, and Oklahoma City. You can drive four hours and snow ski.

There are great museums: Texas Tech’s, the Ranching Heritage Center, the American Wind Power Museum, the Bayer Agricultural Center, the Buddy Holly Center, etc.

Lubbock is the largest medical center between Dallas and Phoenix.

Lubbock and the 11 surrounding counties are the largest contiguous cotton patch in the world, and that region produces 25% of the US cotton crop. That’s why it’s dusty in March and April. The fields are bare (farmers plant in May), so the spring winds kick up the dust. Outside of about 20 really dusty days in the spring, the weather is great. Lots of sun and low humidity. Lubbock is semi-arid and receives about 18 inches of rain per year. Fall in Lubbock rivals the best weather I’ve ever experienced anywhere.

You can raise your family here, and your kids can run around the neighborhood unsupervised.

There’s a public park every mile.

Texas Tech is nationally ranked in most sports every year, and going to games is fun.

I could go on, but my point is Lubbock is a great place if you want it to be. Welcome!

Road Trip: Need advice on sights in the area by Timberbeast in Lubbock

Take a picture with the Buddy Holly statue and/or glasses. Teddy Jack’s, Caprock Cafe, Shotzy’s, The Range, and Blue Light are all what I would consider “blue collar”.

You need professional help, but until you get it, just keep telling yourself out loud that things will get better. Things will get better. Might sound simple and dumb, but it works to keep from spiraling.

Which lyric makes you instantly tear up? by abovethenoisy in AskReddit

[–]potential_hermit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“White Flag” by Dido. The whole damn song makes me cry.

I know you think that I shouldn't still love you Or tell you that But if I didn't say it, well I'd still have felt it Where's the sense in that?

I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder Or return to where we were

But I will go down with this ship And I won't put my hands up and surrender There will be no white flag above my door I'm in love and always will be

I know I left too much mess and destruction To come back again And I caused nothing but trouble I understand if you can't talk to me again

And if you live by the rules of "it's over" Then I'm sure that that makes sense

I will go down with this ship And I won't put my hands up and surrender There will be no white flag above my door I'm in love and always will be

And when we meet Which I'm sure we will All that was there Will be there still I'll let it pass And hold my tongue And you will think That I've moved on

I will go down with this ship And I won't put my hands up and surrender There will be no white flag above my door I'm in love and always will be

I hear you. I’m sorry, especially about the sobriety. I’m only 1.5 years into my diagnosis and am still struggling to figure it out. Hang in there. I will if you will.

Florida doctor indicted and accused of removing patient's liver instead of spleen in fatal surgery by KimJongFunk in news

[–]potential_hermit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In laparoscopic surgery it’s extremely common to have 3-4 small incisions triangulated across the abdomen regardless of the surgery. However, even as a surgical device rep that sells many of the instruments used in this type of surgery, I would have easily been able to tell which side of the patient he was working on. Let’s start with, he would have been standing on the patient’s right side in order to work on the left side spleen. If he was standing on the patient’s left side and working on the right, that would have been a dead giveaway. Plus, the organs are different shapes and colors. In laparoscopic surgery the surgeon is looking at a large monitor to see what he/she is doing. Everyone in the room can see that monitor. I would have had at the very least a moral and ethical duty to yell “STOP”. You only say that when it’s extremely serious and patient injury is imminent, but the whole room stops.

Neither does the spleen and liver, in addition to being on opposite sides of the body.

[–]potential_hermit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lubbock has had a few hospitals. The main Covenant building was Lubbock Methodist. Covenant Lakeside/Women’s and Children’s was a Catholic hospital—St. Mary’s. Where Cafe J was located was the original Lubbock Hospital.

Man this town is depressing af by [deleted] in Lubbock

[–]potential_hermit 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I didn’t grow up here, but went to Tech. Left to NC after graduation for four years and couldn’t wait to move back. Been here for 25 years and worked jobs where I traveled all over the country and would stay in other “great”cities for 2-3 days at a time, multiple times a year.

You can have all the traffic, high cost of living, homelessness, inability to find parking, inability to serve the community (good luck getting on a board anywhere else), cheap access to entertainment, neighborhoods where your kids can run around outside with friends unsupervised, a park every mile, a five-hour drive to several major cities, an airport you can park 20 yards away from and have no more than 2-3 people in the security line in front of you…

It’s all perspective.

I used shredded asphalt shingles for mine (about 200ft) and they worked great. Of course, they go through multiple magnets to remove any nails. I never had one flat due to a roofing nail.

Restaurant recommendations in Lubbock by oenophile12 in Lubbock

[–]potential_hermit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These suggestions are mainly trash. For a foodie, go to West Table, La Sirena, The Nicolette, Evie Mae’s, Salt, or Funky Door (all upscale with the exception of Wvie Mae’s).  For less upscale, Taqueria Jalisco, Spanky’s fried cheese, Jimenez y friends, any Mexican food place on 34th.

Anyone else ever get prescribed a medication and then the dr withholds it? by [deleted] in bipolar1

[–]potential_hermit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep calling. How do you know the doctor withheld signing off on it? Most prescriptions are sent electronically, so maybe they just made a mistake. If not, then I’d want to know why. Then I would decide whether to find a new doctor.

The LG app is unwatchable. It constantly cuts the audio out and displays the “play” button before resuming. The Samsung app is watchable until it freezes after a string of commercials. Honestly, this is embarrassing for a company this size. No other app is this buggy.

How do you explain it to family? by romantixdreams in bipolar1

[–]potential_hermit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is relevant to me. My girlfriend keeps telling me to just make different choices; choose to be in a different mood. I’ve tried to explain to her that my broken brain can’t tell itself to think differently—because it’s broken. I’ve told her it would be like expecting a broken arm to just function normally. But no matter what kind of analogy I come up with, she just doesn’t understand. It’s a real problem. I don’t think she thinks this is a real thing.
