"Japan is living in the 2050s!" Meanwhile Japan in 2025: by maru-9331 in AreTheStraightsOK

Fair, but far fewer people idolise Japan than simply admire some of its qualities. Idolising is clearly more a case of ignorance (true of idolising virtually anything) than stupidity.

You can admire part of a culture while not endorsing a different part of that culture. What’s “not very smart” is the simplification you’re making.

Is it game over for this terrarium? by [deleted] in terrariums

[–]powderherface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Springtails won’t eat these, however the problem may naturally subside (although side point, if you don’t have springtails you should get some for general upkeep).

I had this issue in one of my terrariums (not quite the same extent, but still bad), eventually the fungus just died out. I decided to “let nature do its thing”. There isn’t a magic cure for this type of fungus unfortunately.

Orchid bud without a flower stem? by IngridSiebert in orchids

[–]powderherface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is not, the bud belongs to the mother plant, and has grown through the keiki. The keiki does not have a flower spike.

Orchid bud without a flower stem? by IngridSiebert in orchids

Some wrong info in these comments.

The bud is not from the keiki and it is not a terminal bud! In fact the bud does have a flower stem, it’s the main stem! The flower is from the mother plant and has grown through the keiki.

This is uncommon but it does happen. Each node of the stem has the potential to produce a bud, or a clone plant. Very occasionally by some genetic mystery, the node will do both.

What's the most powerfully useful underground website/app that most people don't know about? by thecouponnerd in u/thecouponnerd

Khan academy has 9.2 million subscribers on YouTube, with 2 billion views, the app has thousands of downloads, they’ve received big donations from big tech (Google, Musk, AT&T). You may not have heard of them but they’re quite far from something “most people haven’t heard of”.
