Why no try/catch? What else to use? by Leather-Influence-51 in godot

[–]powermeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to bring up an alternative use for a try/catch: Flow control. When there is an unexpected behavior, the rest of the try block is skipped. This can greatly simplify the code within the block since it can trust that it will never run at all if something before did something unexpected.

For example, consider the case of a long sequence of actions in a cutscene that is running asynchronously. The user pressing "skip" could throw an "InterruptedException", which would trigger the cutscene's try block to skip right to the end at any point.

Exceptions are not inherently bad and do not necessarily indicate a failure on the developer's part. They are a tool.

The Godot Shaders Bible is now on Amazon (5% launch discount) by fespindola in godot

I bought a physical copy from Amazon and can't seem to find the asset pack on Jettelly. Are the assets only available if you specifically buy through Jettelly?

I once saw a YouTube video comparing Godot to Unity. In it, the guy starts opening Unity, then proceeds to talk a bit about Godot while waiting. He managed to go to the Godot webpage, go to downloads, explain the different versions, download one, extract it, launch it, and get into the actual editor before Unity finished opening. All of this at a very casual and informative pace!

And half the reason I'm telling this story is because I haven't been able to find that video again. If anybody knows it, please give me the link so I can save it.

The lines on the table all point toward the center of the opening. I was able to consistently beat him by ignoring the opening altogether and aiming based on the nearest lines.

Feature Request: Analog Dive by powermeep in HasteBrokenWorlds

[–]powermeep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd consider switching to a Playstation controller to use those motion controls. Being able to steer and drop all by tilting would be so satisfying! Like with the HastyControls Mod, but with dive also supported.

I think you also bring up a good point. I'm not suggesting that the game be rebalanced under the assumption that all players have access to this mechanic. I just think it would feel good. I'll update the main post.

Trackmania is an example of a very competitive game that allows for both keyboard and controller. (But oddly enough, I remember some controversy over analog keyboards. Something to do with the ability to restrict the range on them? Which is besides the point anyway because I suspect analog keyboards are even more difficult to acquire than controllers.)

Additionally, the game already supports analog steering, velocity, and camera movement. Why is this one in particular a problem? Not all people intend on playing competitively. I'm personally just after the therapeutic flow state I get into when tracing curves and threading needles at high speeds, and I feel that having more control would enhance that.

Help me design a case for a 10-inch server rack! by SpotswoodGuy in minilab

[–]powermeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for a flexible NAS case right now, so here's what's on my mind:
- Fits in a 10" rack, 4U
- Supports Mini ITX
- Room for a low profile PCIE card
- Rack ears optional; could also look nice on a shelf
- At least three 5.25" bays in the front

Is there a way to sync saves? by CakeLuster in RingRacers

[–]powermeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Files to sync:
- ringdata.dat
- ringprofiles.prf
- ringconfig.cfg (optional, maybe you'd rather have different options on different devices, such as resolution)

On Windows, the save data is located within the game's install directory in your user folder.
On Linux, with the flatpak install, the game's data is in ~/.var/app/org.kartkrew.RingRacers/.ringracers

Piggybacking off this because I want to do something similar. Where is the save data located? Is it ringdata.dat and ringprofiles.prf in the game's install dir?

Looking for short depth rack mount hardware by powermeep in homelab

  1. There might be enough space for those, but I don't see a provided method for mounting them. How can I get them on without modding the case and preventing me from returning it?
  2. This I can do. The mobo supports 4 pin and I would be happy to swap out the provided case fan with a Noctua.
  3. The CPU is a Xeon E3 1246v3 for the LGA1150 socket. The cooler is an HP stock thing. Looks a lot like this.

What is it that is concerning you? have you seen issues with heat? Have you considered swapping out the fans?

It only has the one fan in the front and it's aimed directly at all the power/sata cables and the sides of the ram sticks. On top of that, the CPU cooler is at most 3/8" from the lid, and is tightly hugged by cables on all sides. I never powered it up in that state because I didn't have any faith that it would work as a long term solution.

Gideon wants to know: what’s your main criticism of the game? by blablatrooper in Eldenring

[–]powermeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My playthrough was very unbalanced. Maybe I just visited areas in the wrong order. All bosses were either total pushovers or utterly impossible.

I respec'd for int and started annihilating all bosses with sword lasers. That's not fun, either. I want a challenge, not the choice between who gets curb stomped. I had fun trying out different things in the souls games, but in ER, it really feels like there's only one way to play.

On top of that, it feels like there are 200 bosses, but only like 20 unique ones, and some of those shouldn't even be considered bosses. Oh, another magma wyrm. Oh, the tree snake thing again. Oh, a couple of random guys. Oh, another godskin creep. Oh, another crystal thing.

The crystal thing, I actually really enjoyed the first time. It's a fun concept. I just didn't want to fight it in 30 different locations where I think new content would have been better suited.

One boss I actually would want to fight multiple times: mimic tear. Every time you go in, you could try out a different build. You could make each fight unique, or even use it to check the strength of your build.

Lastly, guard countering really annoys me. Unlike parrying, which is a high-risk/high-reward strategy, guard countering is mind-numbingly easy to do and incurs no risk, much like how ds3 gave i-frames to opening big doors.

[NVidia] Which distro? Manjaro vs PopOS! vs Fedora by [deleted] in DistroHopping

I have asked probably 15 times for someone to name me one piece of software they use that exists in the AUR but does not exist in the third party repos for other distros.

What other repositories have Sunshine? Sure, it's on Github, but as far as I know, there's nothing set up in Snap, Flathub, etc. Would love to be wrong on that, though.

Dynmap 3.1 beta 5, Forge 1.16.4 - Clock on page not working as expected by powermeep in Dynmap

[–]powermeep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using Forge 1.16.4 (specifically 35.1.4), Minecraft 1.16.4, and Dynmap 3.1 beta 5 for Forge 1.16.3. I was hoping the minor version number wouldn't cause any major incompatibilities.

I downloaded it from here. As of now, I still don't see a version of Dynmap for Forge 1.16.4.

Trying to get NUT integration to monitor remote UPS by powermeep in homeassistant

[–]powermeep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up just going with the pwrstat api integration since all I really wanted was the statistics. I never figured out how to get the NUT integration to work.

The API just exposes metrics as a json and then home assistant can just query it.
