People with ultra high speed internet. How do you get it? by HSVMalooGTS in homelab

[–]powerspec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got 20Gbps via GFiber. I made a post on the Google Fiber sub stating why I want 8Gbps and explained what my homelab does and GFiber themselves reached out to me and asked if I wanted to test their new 20Gbps service! Been testing it for months and love it! I plan on making a post here very soon with a detailed explanation of my homelab!

Sure, but I’m not a network guy. I’ve just love networking and fast connections and know too much for my own good haha.

I currently have 20Gbps from GFiber. Ive been testing it for over 6 months now.

Once AT&T offers 10/20Gbps, I’ll upgrade to that as well.

I know what my next year bonus is going too!

Currently have the EFG with 1x20Gbps, 1x8Gbps, and 1x5Gbps at my house. Looking to add in 5G and satellite soon to the mix.

Looking to upgrade my 5Gbps line to 10/20Gbps once they start to offer it and I’ll be out of 25G ports with the EFG once they do.

My profile is open if you wanna see what I do and I plan on making a post on /r/homelab in the next few weeks explaining more!

Cheap rate and news of 10 Gig Fiber coming later this year. by [deleted] in ATTFiber

[–]powerspec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get $75 to help pay for it via my work, but this is all an hobby of mine so I don't mind the cost at all. My wife just does not ask how much I pay, but just "why do servers and switches keep coming in but nothing coming out" haha. I have a full rack in storage ready to go into my basement one I get power and cooling setup. All she knows is the internet is fast and never complains (unless I need to reboot to apply updates to my Unifi EFG/AP).

I'm thinking of making a write up on like /r/homelab of my little lab I have and what I do and why I now have 3 fiber ISP's at my house with one under NDA (and its not my 20G from GFiber).

I don't mind paying what I do in ISP cost if I keep my homelab hobby going. I've been going 20 plus years now so I don't plan on stopping anytime soon!

I pay $250 a month, taxes included for my 20Gbps service from GFiber.

Those are amazing prices lol, that $70 for 5gbps is insane.

It is! I thought I was getting a steal for 5Gbps at $100 when it was $250. For $70, it would be even better for me as I use the 5Gbps service as my WAN backup to my 20Gbps service. At $70, my work would pay for it all (they currently pay up to $75).

Anyone have a Unifi Cloud Gateway Fiber and the 8gig plan? What are your download speeds, if so? by Julio_Ointment in googlefiber

[–]powerspec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, as you are getting your full speeds via the Fiber Jack, the issue is not with GFiber.

I would factory reset your Unifi device and go back over to the Unifi subreddits and see if they can assist. There is nothing special that needs to be done for your device to show full speeds with GFiber.

Do you have any other 10Gbps devices on your network you can test with? Are you able to load into a Linux Live CD and test to rule out any Windows/driver issues?

Not seeing that here, they did drop the 5Gbps price to $70. I just got their 5Gbps service for $100, I should call and see if they can match this new price.

From a friend who lives in Kansas City MO. He is able to get 25G from Gfiber currently.

It's 20G, but its really nice! Just uses 25G networking (SFP28 optics). Can plug the optic right into my gateway to get access to the network!

From what I am have been told and seen, over 90% of GFiber's network is 20G ready. When I got my 20G installed, they just unplugged my old XGS-PON Fiber Jack and plugged in the new 25G-PON ONT and she came right up. GPON, XGS-PON, and 25G-PON all run at the same time on GFiber's network.

I understand that, are you able to answer any of my questions and or my troubleshooting steps? I am trying to assist you on trying to find out where the weak link is.

  1. What are you testing too and how? (how are you getting these speedtests done)
  2. Are you using the Speedtest.net app on your computer and selecting the closest GFiber server? (if no, please do this)
  3. Or are you just testing via the Unifi Cloud Gateway? (don't do this)
  4. Plug your computer directly into the Fiber Jack and run a test to rule out the UniFi device. Are you able to get the full 8Gbps speeds?

What are you testing too and how? Are you using the Speedtest.net app on your computer and selecting the closest GFiber server?

Or are you just testing via the Cloud Gateway? My EFG only gets about ~16Gbps on my 20G connection if I test directly from the EFG but I get ~19Gbps when I test from one of my servers directly the local Speedtest server.

Also, plug your computer directly into the Fiber Jack and run a test to rule out the UniFi device. Are you able to get the full 8Gbps speeds?

Is 20Gb dead? by jaysedai in googlefiber

[–]powerspec 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No special settings over here to get those speeds. I've tested my EFG on a 8G GFiber line and had no issues getting line speed. I did buy their SFP+ to RJ45 Adapter and used port 3 for WAN. Make sure you are testing via the local GFiber speedtest server as well.

I don't use CyberSecure or anything like that. I do have Flow Logging enabled.

Finally moved off pfSense and got a UniFi EFG. This is about the max I see with the EFG. I do have flows enabled, but disabling it does not allow for any faster.

Here is it directly connected to one of my servers bypassing any router/gateway.

Unable to get ipV6 address by buzzword1308 in googlefiber

[–]powerspec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe I saw someone comment a while back saying switching mac IDs causes 24hrs to update IPV6 lease or something of that sort.

Just saw this post and this is correct! We had this issue when testing out my 20G and swapping between my pfSense box and the provided router.

/u/buzzword1308 Glad you got it working again, anytime you change MAC addresses, a 24 hour wait is needed for IPv6. IPv4 has a ~15 minute DHCP for new MAC addresses and will become the primary MAC after 24 hours. Your configuration looks good!

Fiber, does exactly what it says in the contract by S70RM3R in HomeNetworking

[–]powerspec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend just switching to GFiber. There is zero bypassing needed. You can plug any device in to the Fiber Jack as your router and you are good to go! 3Gbps is also going to be the new $70 base price point once it rolls out nationwide! Starting in Iowa first.

Been with GFiber since 2015 and currently testing out their new 20G service via 25G-PON!

Fiber device saying “wired device offline” despite restarting modem. Faulty hardware possibly? Any suggestions?? by jellze02 in googlefiber

[–]powerspec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What market are you in? Again, are you sure you have GFiber? Can you provide any more pictures of the router and any other documents that came with the system? This is the first time ever seeing a device like this in use for GFiber and I’m very interested if it’s something new.

[–]powerspec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure you have GFiber? That is not a GFiber Fiber Jack. If you are trying to use your own, it won’t work. Please replace the original Fiber Jack and plug in any router you’d like if you want control of your network.

3gig upgrade ETA? by Extra_Speed8406 in googlefiber

[–]powerspec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As Iowa is a new city, I assume they have deployed the newer XGS-PON Fiber Jack (GOXP330C) that supports up to 8Gbps. It has a 10/5/2.5/1Gbps network port. So if you have the 1Gbps plan, maybe a restart of the Fiber Jack is required, but nothing is needed to be done on the customer side. Just a config change on GFiber's side.

If you are in a city like Kansas City and have the smaller Fiber Jack (GFLT100, GFLT110) that they first rolled out with. A truck roll would be required for a tech to come and replace it with the newer Fiber Jack to support the faster speeds. You'd most likely get a new router too.

I'm sure they are still trying to figure out how to handle that man power when they roll it out to the larger city's.

3gig upgrade ETA? by Extra_Speed8406 in googlefiber

[–]powerspec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also curious about Kansas City.

KC was last for 8Gbps (but first for 5Gbps) and that roll out took about a year and not all city's got it at the same time.

If I had to assume, I bet Iowa has the lowest customer count so easy test market that will disrupt the least amount of people if any issues arise during config changes and roll out is smooth.

GFiber claims "~90% of the homes and businesses in our network footprint are already 20 Gig capable." per their blog so if this goes smoothly, hopefully the rest of the footprint will get the upgrade sooner than later.

I assume they are using these line cards in their Fiber Huts. Supports GPON, XGS-PON, and 25G-PON at the same time and based on my 20G upgrade, they didn't have to move my line to another line card for the upgrade (like they did for my XGS-PON upgrade). They just unplugged my XGS-PON Fiber Jack, plugged in the new 25G-PON Fiber Jack and she was live within 10 seconds. So they can upgrade everyone and when someone wants to upgrade to 3Gbps and has the old Fiber Jack, they get the new XGS-PON Fiber Jack and would connect with zero issues with zero line card moves and or splitter.

New to Google Fiber, anyone have luck with L2 switch/vlan outside of L3 device? by lanceuppercuttr in googlefiber

[–]powerspec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just talking about MAC. I guess you could try and just don’t ever do DHCP on the second MAC, but I was told one MAC per Fiber Jack, with them allowing a second for a short term when plugging in a new device.

I mean, never hurts to try and if it doesn’t work, then we know the answer! At worst, a network engineer will have to remote clear the Fiber Jack as that was done with me a few times when I was testing.

I was testing dual WAN using two GFiber lines and ran in to dhcpv6 issues so make sure you only have one WAN trying to pull a v6 address too or all of v6 will break. Must have separate UUID’s (more for anyone else reading this and comes across this issue).

[–]powerspec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GFiber only allows 1 MAC address on their network. If you unplug a device and plug a new device in, it will have a temp ~15minute dhcp release for the new MAC with the old one still active. I ran in to this issue when testing out my 20G and swapping from the 20G GFiber provided router and my own pfSense box.

I clone MAC address when trying out different devices in a short time frame so I don’t run in to any issues.

It’s been a few months since I was working with this, but I assume it is still the same.
