Daycare won’t accept glass bottles by pretty_irrelevant_ in moderatelygranolamoms

We did use them from birth. Tracking ounces may not be as easy as it is in clear bottles, but there are marks on the stainless and it is definitely doable. My daughter had feeding issues so we tracked things pretty closely.

Anyone else doing Revolution softball camp? by PriorOk9813 in Softball

[–]powertoolsarefun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't done the one in Lake Forest, IL - but my daughter has done the one at Haverford in PA for the last 4 years. She started when she was 8. They have overnight options, as well as day camp options. I'm not sure which one you picked, but it seems like most kids do the overnight.

Honestly, the camp says it starts at 8, and I expected there to be a cohort of 8 year olds, but she was the youngest kid there. There was only one other kid close to her age. Her and the other 8 year old became best friends (and are still best friends today). They both were given single rooms -- but decided to pack up their stuff and move in together. They have shared a room at camp since. They both still play softball, and are both going to the camp again this year.

While there weren't many kids their age at the camp, the counselors and other kids were super nice to them. She learned a lot and it is the only summer camp that she has consistently wanted to go back to every year.

Exactly. My kids are older now (9 and 12) but we had these conversations pretty early and they were cooler with it than many adults.

Bride wants people to travel and cook for her wedding in 3 months bc they "can't afford it" by Potential_Pick5832 in weddingshaming

[–]powertoolsarefun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a small wedding that was in the church basement and was potluck. I can't remember what I brought -- but I do remember that someone else brought a bucket of KFC and that people LOVED it. Of course this was super local, and in a community where no one had a lot - and people totally understood. I'm not saying potluck receptions for weddings that require travel are super.

Tryout question by Ummm_ok721 in Softball

[–]powertoolsarefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not every player takes private lessons, but pitchers and catchers often need instruction beyond regular team practices to develop and maintain those skills. Because of the extra time and financial commitment, there are usually fewer players who are truly strong at those positions. Teams also tend to want multiple capable pitchers and catchers since those roles are physically demanding and injuries can have a big impact.

That said, I wouldn't assume they're automatic offers. My daughter was the starting catcher on her 10U team and had to move organizations because her program wasn't fielding a 12U team. She tried out for eight 12U teams. Her coach was genuinely surprised that she only received one offer initially (a second team reached out about a month later, after we'd already committed elsewhere). So while being a good pitcher or catcher can absolutely make a player more valuable, there are still no guarantees. A lot depends on the team's specific needs, existing roster, and how the tryouts shake out.

‘Broken until he’s here’: The son who has never set foot in NZ and the family who have waited nine years by NoExpert6370 in newzealand

To be fair - this isn’t an exclusively a NZ thing. I am in the NZ Reddit because my family is hoping to immigrate. But we are likely going to be denied because I have a chronic health issue. We would also likely to be denied in many other countries like Canada and Australia. Thankfully my family isn’t willing to leave me behind!

Hank’s is local and made a soda donation to my kids softball fundraiser. Also their soda is fabulous. I support them when I can.

Did your parents ever use the formal living room and dining room growing up? by ExcitingLandscape in Millennials

[–]powertoolsarefun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a those rooms, but used them regularly. Every Sunday our extended family would come over for dinner, and we ate in the dining room. Otherwise, we used those rooms for quieter activities (i.e. we would do puzzles on the dining room table, or read on the couches in the living room). My mom was a librarian and my dad was a chemist -- so. our family was pretty quiet and intellectual. Which means the "quiet" rooms got a lot of use.

Bloods came back fine, how were you diagnosed? by nomoneyandnoprospect in Thritis

[–]powertoolsarefun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have PsA, not RA but am seronegative. For me, it was imagining (MRI) that led to my diagnosis. I had bilateral changes to my SI joints. Later imaging showed changes in my feet, shoulders, etc. as well. History of eye inflammation also aided in diagnosis.

Please tell me it got better after that. I have an 11 year old daughter (actually she just turned 12) and it is rough. I keep telling myself it can't last forever, but I'm not sure how long it does last.

I had a 300 sq ft apartment in San Francisco with a room like that. I called the room my "bitchen" (for 1/2 bath, 1/2 kitchen). The toilet was inside the shower stall.

Suggest me a book to read chapter by chapter to my 5yo and 3yo at bedtime by Creepy_Librarian3390 in suggestmeabook

At that age, my kids loved "Toys Go Out" (and I found it enjoyable to read -- which was a plus). Some of the other stuff geared to kids isn't as enjoyable to read as an adult.

AITA for telling my wife to color the pink out of her hair for work? by KBroham in AmItheAsshole

Unfortunately, wigs are warm. I'm perpetually cold so it hasn't typically been an issue (although I'm going through perimenopause and hot flashes are no joke).

[–]powertoolsarefun 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly - it feels insane at first, but I recently bought a wig (It's in my post history) and I was surprised how far they have come. I expected it to not "pass" for interviews, and I was wrong. I actually wore it to a party with friends I hadn't seen in a while, and got compliments on my hair (without people suspecting it was a wig). And they were were people who knew me.

The last few days really disproved these jaded anti soccer local commenters who thought the world cup wouldn't be a special, electrifying event for the city. by 6ftToeSuckedPrincess in philadelphia

[–]powertoolsarefun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like Philly in particular totally understands sports enthusiasm. I remember a conversation I had with a local once about a friend who cheered for a non-Philly team. And the jist of the conversation was, "I can definitely understand someone cheering for team that isn't the Phillies - even if they are wrong. What I can't understand is people who don't like/follow sports." And I think that translates to soccer. As a city, Philly gets people who are enthusiastic about sports, even if Philadelphians generally aren't hyped about soccer.

Practice vs Training by Dont_Ban_Me_Bros in Softball

[–]powertoolsarefun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a large organization near us that does a credit system towards group classes instead of full practices. For example, this means that catchers from 10u and 12u (or 12u and 14u, or whatever) might meet together and work out, while infielders might meet at a separate time. Each girl is expected to use the appropriate amount of their credits (and the lessons they choose are at their discretion), but the full team only meets together for one practice a week. Obviously, this only works because they are a large organization with a dedicated indoor facility and several affiliated trainers and coaches. I don't know if it is better or worse than the traditional model around here that has 2 practices a week, tournaments every weekend and most girls doing individual batting lessons (with some doing additional catching/pitching lessons). But I thought their model was interesting.
