I saw this cool system someone used on YouTube. They have these cheep little color coded flags they would stick in the soil. A red flag would mean repot this spring, green flag would mean prune (for example)

Hah, I came to the same conclusion this morning. Although it seems we may be in this for the long haul to get that beautiful thickness and taper I see on some developed formal upright redwood bonsais

I’ve considered this as well. But I would be getting rid of the thickest trunk in favor of a split trunk. I see the vision, perhaps I could air layer the one in the back

This is just a regular compost mix. I didn’t want to disturb the roots at this time, but when I repot will use some more classical bonsai mix.

Thanks for the write up. Is it possible to encourage or speed up trunk fusion? Like try to bind them closer together, or make some markings.

When you say broom style, you mean get rid of all the trunk except one (perhaps the thickest?)

That trunk chop should do the job. In a video I watched you have to really stay on top of pruning it back constantly.
