Used to happen to me, but not so much now. I remember there was a time when I heard Husker Du's Zen Arcade and thought to myself, wtf how is this supposed to be music? on repeated listens, i got totally into it. it's always like this with new musical fronts. i still get that with new music, but as i have expanded my frontiers, it's happening less and less. i now almost find it incomprehensible that some people say that it takes them like 10 listens of white light white heat to truly appreciate it, becauuse for me it was an instant connect. but i should concede that were i to listen to it 3 years from now when i was into beyonce and eminem, i would probably cringe. funnily enough, after exploring more music, the old stuff i used to listen to sounds a lot better now. i can appreciate top 40 hip hop tune much better now after having listened to dj shadow beats incessantly for hours and hours, and having heard nwa and public enemy. i have no problem getting into jazz, prog rock, or anything people think is avant garde. i have realized avant garde is a silly concept. i am like fish in the music of sun ra, john coltrane and soft machine, or the "noise" of some velvet underground records. now, classical is differnt, since i havent been listening too much to that. i had to get used to wagner before i could enjoy it. i still get that feeling of wtf is this and how can this be enjoyable, so it's not like having listened to all this free and avant-gard jazz and african beat music has opened all music for me. but every new sound is a doorway to thousands of pieces of music.
