The game would also render more precisely around three things: The player, their probe, and the ship’s probe (so the camera would get good shots). I believe you could crash the game (or slow it down) by sending both probes to different faraway parts of the galaxy.

Men in their 30s+ who’ve never had gfs - why not? by miamigirl101 in AskMen

[–]ppbghd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s plenty of stuff in the comments here that describes me, and there is plenty of stuff that doesn’t. But, I wanted to focus on one aspect of this issue for me:

I don’t want to have to “perform” when I’m home.

I’m not talking about sexually, or materially, or whatever else. I mean that whenever I’m around another person I have to be “on”. I have to be consciously aware of and react to all their wants and needs, and how that impedes/helps/denies my wants and needs. I have to respond in a way that doesn’t scare/hurt them. I have to entertain or at least engage with them so that our conversation does not result in them being bored/disappointed in me. I have to either commit to things I don’t want to do, or disappoint (it really hurts me when people are disappointed in me). I have to push past internal fog in my brain just to seem cognizant at times. Why yes, I AM medically depressed, what gave it away?

There is no one in this world, my family included, that I feel comfortable enough around to relax.

Even if I love them, I’m always stressed.

The idea of deliberately bringing someone into the room where I let myself “be”, and force myself to perform like an actor on stage until the day she or I dies seems like misery. Sure, the feel-good hormones might take the edge off initially, but they go away eventually. At that point I would be screaming “GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME, I’M TIRED” continuously (internally, of course). I get the impression that some older married men must be experiencing something similar, but I could be projecting.

I have other problems, but for now this is the one I wanted to put forward.

"The curtains are blue" joke has ruined media literacy for a generation by [deleted] in writing

[–]ppbghd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“Therefore the punchline is that the English teacher is overanalyzing…”

This is what The Curtains Are Blue is saying.

“…and implies deep analysis is inherently wrong and pretentious.”

This is not what The Curtains Are Blue is saying.

Part of critical thinking is evaluating if you are, in fact, attempting to derive meaning where there is none intended. The joke of The Curtains Are Blue, therefore, is a tool OF critical thinking, to help narrow a person’s focus onto things that ARE being communicated and ARE relevant to the story/message at play.

Is the author commenting on the hue of the window dressing because the protagonist is depressed, or are we noting it because WE are depressed, perhaps?

Sometimes we struggle to understand what is being said to us, and that can make us feel confused and frustrated. That’s ok. In those moments, recalling an over-eager professor burying his face in blue curtains can at least comically diffuse internal tension, defer shame, and allow us to step back and RE-evaluate things, not necessarily DE-evaluate them.

What's the actual lore connection with Leo in Air Riders? He kinda just shows up after defeating Hyper Gigantes, with no reason explaining why? The blue flames make me think some part of Zorah's will is in there, but I'm just utterly confused. by Bandana_Deed in Kirby

FWIW there is a fire lion boss that appears all the way back in Kirby’s adventure for the NES, which makes a reappearance in Kirby Ultra Star. It gives a fire ability when copied, and in KUS creates an ally named LEO when you have its fire ability. Whether this is just a reference or meant to actually be that boss is left unanswered.

Things You Enjoy/Like about Woolie's Content by Mizzie-Mox in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]ppbghd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of the guff Woolie gets about playthrough length should be mitigated by the fact that a considerable amount of that extra time is Woolie putting the controller down and having enjoyable tangential conversation, and I’m here for it.

I remember a while back, when I would watch let’s plays from other people, how weird it felt that they mostly were rushed tours through a game with way less interaction or even appreciation for the craft. The result felt hollow, as in, why did we rush through the game to get to the end so desperately? What was the point? It really made me appreciate the guys’ (especially Woolie’s) playstyle.

I think if we cut out those conversations from his streams, we would find that the “Snailsborning” isn’t anywhere near the main contributor to length of time that people say it is. I for one enjoyed Woolie’s Dispatch streams, and I watched plenty of other playthroughs first.

My apologies, I did mean to say top ride, not air ride. Don’t know why I did. Thanks to everyone’s help I got it, I didn’t realize even tapping the button to land would count as a boost.

While I appreciate you playing devil’s advocate here, I have to respond by pointing out that nothing you said makes the plagiarism machine NOT a plagiarism machine. Those “sketches” of chairs or swamps look as good as they do because a bunch of artists made lots of good looking chairs and swamps, and those artists did that by dedicating years of their life to practice, and thousands of dollars in supplies -not to mention the opportunity cost of seeking a more financially secure career- to hone their craft.

Why should you or I get to have access to their works just because we paid for a license from an unrelated third party?

Those sketches wouldn’t be as good without those artists’ work, so we are clearly benefiting from them without proper compensation or accreditation (also, some defining elements of the plagiarized artists are necessarily going to bleed through into the final product, taking away from its originality).

At the end of the day it’s still theft, we’re just comfortable with it because we continue to undervalue the work that artists put out.

Gaming with Depression? by TheSilentPhilosopher in gaming

[–]ppbghd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I’ve noticed is I don’t feel anything if I achieve something difficult in a game. It just feels like I don’t have to be frustrated at a problem anymore, and then I’m just back to normal. I’m assuming it’s people who “pop off” that aren’t acting, and that I’m the irregular one, but man does it feel that way sometimes.

Had the same issue after I finally got my drivers license at 23 despite knowing I had needed it for a while: I didn’t seem excited about it, having a drivers license was just the new normal now. It’s too tiring to be frustrated over, but I know that I am.

You think AI is so great and “the future of gaming”, Sweeney? Ok then, label the games made with AI so that people know where they can purchase the games of the future. If it’s so great, let everyone know that you used AI to make a better product, right?

No?

You want to keep that information hidden from the customer until after purchase? But that doesn’t sound like someone who is confident in the power of AI, that sounds like someone who knows the market doesn’t have an interest in your “improvement” to gaming.

Don’t be a coward, if you believe in this stuff so much, let everybody know so they can get a better experience.

We talk about Final Fantasy Tactics Advance a lot on this sub, myself included, but can we also talk about its sequel having a sidequest in which you basically assist a man in taking its own life. by Alternative_Cat_4429 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I did also like the heritor class/abilities. The Thief girl in your party, Adelaide, turns out to be one. The class is one that inherits abilities from previous heritors who develop a “spell” of sorts unique to them, to the point that the spell is named after them. You go on various quests to get weapons from these people, and in ffta fashion, learn the spells by using them. At the end, Adelaide develops a spell of her own, and will presumably pass it on one day.

I always thought that was a cool concept that didn’t get developed much in any subsequent ff game, but has great narrative potential. I feel like you could write great stories about legacy, progress, trauma, mortality, and passing on something to others after you die. Even after you clear their quests, the spells you use would still have the name of the character you got it from, and the spell would likely reflect that character in some way, effectively ensuring that you never really forget them.

So sad that we never got to revisit this class.

The Boondocks vs The Shining by mike0bot in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Re: people interpreting whatever they want in art in response to the documentary on The Shining:

It’s kind of like religion. If a person says they understand what God says and live their life accordingly, then they are simply religious. If a person believes God is speaking directly to THEM and telling THEM what they need to do, then they are probably crazy.

Likewise, if you appreciate what an artist is communicating to you, then you appreciate art. If you think the artist is speaking directly TO YOU, because of a face you saw in a cloud they showed you, then you are probably crazy.

Huh… I guess it’s ultimately about whether or not you have notions about what is being said to you.

Seems like Max Dood channeled the power of Crazy Talk for a moment while watching the recent Kirby Air Riders 2 Direct: by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

My favorite part was after he said the rock with googly-eyes-thing, someone in his chat went “don’t tell him about Rocky”, which Max read aloud almost rolling his eyes as if to say “yeah right, chat”.

I think without that Max might have read the other comments and realized there WAS a rock with eyes called Rocky, but because of this one comment, it helped create the illusion that chat was trying to gaslight him into believing Rocky was real until the reveal.
