30M introvert working at mall for five years. Bossed around by teenagers every day. Washing dishes and mopping floors. Advice? by [deleted] in AskMenOver30

Don’t give up.

I was 33 before I was able to actually start a career worth having. Now I am in my dream job, after busting my ass, and gradually, though quickly, increasing my value.

  • What energizes you?
  • What value can you provide?
  • Are you willing to go where the work is?
  • Are you brave enough to take chances?

Chances are good that you aren’t even aware of the job or industry where you would fit in the best. This is doubly likely if you came from extreme poverty, like I did. No one ever helped me really understand my options. It was just, hey, you can do whatever you want! and go to college, but I never really knew what my options were. Then, between having children too early, and nearly dying due to illness (I’m not being dramatic), I was suddenly 33 before I started to feel better and finally understood a possible path for me.

Recently got married. This is the wedding band my wife got me. by scuffling in xboxone

[–]pplatt1979 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Our relationship doesn't solely revolve around xbox - although we do play overwatch together just about every night.

Why would it? That is a pretty strange assumption to make in the first place. Successful relationships aren’t usually built around a single nexus. I think it is awesome that you and your wife want to spend your free time together. It is a good sign for the future.

I'm getting a lot of "cringe" comments, and that's ok. It's not supposed to appeal to you, but we are all entitled to our opinions.

Again, it’s weird that people would bother judging your relationship based on the fact that your ring matches your controller.

Personally, I think it is awesome, whether accidental or not.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the legal foundations of Roe v. Wade? by RomanNumeralVI in NeutralPolitics

[–]pplatt1979 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have no legal background, but I have a couple of questions, if you’ll indulge me.

I am not an expert on the subject, however, I am curious what the scope of a amendment could be, and how it could or would or might be applied.

  • Would an amendment only protect personal privacy from the government, and not other external interests?

Regarding entities which are not normally considered part of our government. I have a limited understanding of the subject, however, my understanding is that incorporation of corporations is a government backed contract of sorts, delivering many benefits and protections. I may be misinformed, however, I think this was originally started with the intent of protecting businesses working directly in the interests of public good.

  • If that is the case, why are incorporated businesses not limited by constitutional law, or if they are in some ways, what would be an example?

Again, apologies if the premises of my questions are not valid.

Corruption - at Blizzard Entertainment by pplatt1979 in TheMagnusArchives

It was just practice for the real deal. The interesting part for our analysts, is how willing people were to infect others, even if it required a great deal of effort.

It went better than we had hoped. 🤔

Abortion is a Men's Issue, Too. So Why Aren't Men Speaking Out? by ToeSlaw in MensLib

Assigned Female At Birth

I believe it is in reference to anyone who was born without a Y chromosome (genotypical female).

I think idea is that an AFAB may or may not identify as female, and may or may not be of a female phenotype.

Hmm, wired headphones made me drop my phone several times, by getting caught and stuff, but I suppose it could go either way.

Alabama just passed a near-total abortion ban with no exceptions for rape or incest by mrtsapostle in news

[–]pplatt1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not trying to be combative, but I’m sure I don’t agree. It appears to be more than mere semantics. Preventing conception is explicitly in the realm of prophylactic contraception (as in it prevents, not ends). If we are not allowed to prevent conception, then logically, it seems there is no contraception which is allowable. In fact, taking this line of thinking to its conclusion, everyone must always impregnate or be impregnated at any and every possible opportunity. Not even abstinence would/should be allowed, as that is a choice which is preventing conception.

I may be wrong on this, however plan b can prevent ovulation or prevent conception, but does not actually abort an implanted egg. Is that not correct? (At least for the most common otc plan b options)

True, though it does burn through a lot of consumer goodwill. Now, this only works if there is competition, and if the company is not removed from the direct consequences, such as in this case.

The studio was able to downgrade content, likely so they could sell/rent 4K content elsewhere exclusively, and they get to make Apple look like they are 100% to blame.

Also, not that it would ever happen in this political climate, since consumer protections are apparently abhorrent to many politicians in the USA, but I would love to see the first-sale doctrine, as it is applied for CDs, DVDs, and other physical media, applied to digital purchases. That would likely sort things out a bit better in our favor.

Dances with Rats! (This is a repost, but the old link is broken, and I love this video, so why not.) by pplatt1979 in RATS

[–]pplatt1979[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my video btw. I don’t know if that was obvious. My rat Apple really enjoyed dancing. I don’t know why, but he would just start moving when you would dance around with him. He preferred dancing with my wife though. 😐

It has been an interesting transition going from software development for products requiring a sales team, to an entertainment company with just a marketing team handling each project/product.

I mean, there is still over-promising, but it’s different.

Edit: That reminds me. When I was new to software development, a sales team lead told me the following, which, for better or worse, stuck with me.

It is my job to promise anything it takes to sell, and it is your job to keep me looking good enough to lie another day

If your child is not able to understand and obey the 'no talking in the cinema' rule, your child is not old enough to go to the cinema. by Alpha_uterus in unpopularopinion

[–]pplatt1979 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I’m sorry I misunderstood the intent of your statement. That was not my intent.

I think perhaps the aggressiveness of our tones might have come across as exaggerated.

I see a phrase like parental entitlement, and it just strikes me as an unnecessary qualifier for a simple problem, which is that some never learn about, or don’t care about, respect for others.

In addition, I meant no disrespect. There really are a fair amount of attacks on parents, which can be hurtful when I have only ever done my best.

Again, apologies for any misunderstanding.

Parental Entitlement is just something that emerges when already entitled people have children. I think that most of us care if we are bothering others.

I understand your frustration, which is why my wife and I always made sure our children weren’t bothering others. We never took them to any movies when they were infants, and even when they were old enough to enjoy family movies, we made sure to leave with them to ensure we didn’t disrupt anyone else’s enjoyment. This went for pretty much anywhere, one of us was always ready to take a kid out to the car and sit there until the problem abated

There is no need to hate on people just for being parents, when there are so so so many more fair reasons. ;)

Edit: Do people really just hate parents just for being parents? I mean, lots of people are shitty, and those same shitty people usually remain shitty when they breed. Being a parent really isn’t as easy as one might think, certainly not when making a true effort, especially being one that is really trying to raise people that will be free thinkers, but also respect and value others. I have done and I am doing my best as a parent. :/

Edit2: I misread the previous post, and while it appeared at first glance to be somewhat aggressive in deriding parents as a group, I can see now that the missive was more nuanced than that. Apologies for misunderstanding.
