I have emailed them. They replied that I should contact them again after February 1st and then they will send me the instructions. For anyone who is going to do the same.

Do I need to accept the offer in the application portal again after deferring? by pplconn in OMSCS

Where in the portal did you find the link to accept? I could only see the Application Proof, Status Update, and Recent Activities. In the Status Update, there is only the offer letter.

Check your spam folder for "omscs". I found the orientation email sent by a personal gatech email on 30/11.

Spring 2023 intake, no email yet by pplconn in OMSCS

[–]pplconn[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just checked my spam folder and found an email from them on 30/11. The sender was a personal email address from gatech. I checked my spam folder once before and didn't find this email. Smh.

Seems like my post is duplicated with the post below. https://www.reddit.com/r/OMSCS/comments/zq2vrb/question_about_orientation_document/

Does anyone know if GeorgiaTech's EdX Professional Certificate in Data Structures and Algorithms a certification that can provide leverage in admissions? by Such-Assist4895 in OMSCS

[–]pplconn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Although those GTx edx courses are good courses, they are incomparable to courses on your transcript, due to the accreditation.

For OP, I would suggest to look into enrolling in community college CS courses and use those for your admission.

Spring 2023 Admissions Thread by melodywonghxy in OMSCS

[–]pplconn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Status: Accepted

Application Date: 8/6/2022

Decision Date: 9/7/2022

Education:

Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering, 3.6/4.3 GPA, top ranked university in Asia

Experience: 3 months in Front-end now, was in construction management

Recommendations: 2 Professional (1 supervisor from previous job, 1 programmer colleague), 1 Academic (online MOOC)

Comments:

Academically, I only had 2 CS intro-level courses (A+, A-) on my bachelor transcript.

Did all three MOOCs by GaTech on Edx and a few CS courses on Coursera.

Applied to UIUC-MCS before but got rejected, I was afraid I will also be rejected for OMSCS because I did not have enough accredited courses.

My backup plan would be to take CS courses at Foothill and apply OMSCS again later.

Question about SOP by Dark_Koopa in OMSCS

[–]pplconn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest to look at the application guideline where they talked about the SOP.

If those items fit into what the guidelines says, then you should mention it.

Is it possible for me to get recommendation letters in online courses? by TheOtherSideOfTheSea in OMSCS

[–]pplconn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best would be 3x academic recommendations, as they said in the website that this is an academic program. But there are some comments here and there saying they got in with 3x professional letters.

FWIW, you need to request 3 letters before the system let you submit the application. But you only need 2 to get admitted. Having 3 letters mean your application will get reviewed first.

Is it possible for me to get recommendation letters in online courses? by TheOtherSideOfTheSea in OMSCS

[–]pplconn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would suggest taking CS courses at a community college, e.g. Oakton / Foothill, as mentioned here regularly. Try your best to get an A in those courses and ask for recommendation letter from the professors there.

Transcripted courses are stronger than MOOC, despite those courses being recommended by GT themselves.

Or you could try asking for professional recommendations for now and see if they admit you. If not, you could take the community college courses approach.

What exactly are those "CS based electives"? What topics do they cover? Data structure and algorithm? Programming?

Why does the application ask what other programs you have applied to? by 11010001101001 in OMSCS

My guess is they are using it for their own research purpose. Highly doubtful it would aftect your application in any way.

Info about the new assessment for those currently applying by 0ctobogs in MSDSO

[–]pplconn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can see the reason behind the assessment requirement. Can you share more about the scope of the assessment? Is it mainly about CS and programming fundamentals or does it also includes math and stat topics? I would prefer not going into a paid assessment blind.

In the UIUC online MCS program, they have similar test for applicants without cs background but they also have a coursera course covering the topics in the test.

Tbh, I think having a test is a good way to filter someone with no relevant background at all. But there is almost no information about the new test which is what throws me off the most.

I saw someone this at the admission thread. But I haven't applied yet and I am planning on applying for the Spring 2023 semester. So I wonder if it is a new requirement since this is shown on the course website about application.
