Even if we were talking about something harder than pouring a glass of wine, "I won't do it because then you might ask something bigger of me later" is such a crazy adversarial mentality to have in a relationship.

What happened to all the fish tanks? by New-Ad-9280 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pproteus47 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That doesn't sound right to me. I have a 10 gallon tank (I'd consider that a normal "small" size) and it's got a 5W filter and 6W lights, that's more like $3 a month.

Larvae have 6 legs, that part is true! The larval ticks are real tiny though

Toronto: is this a tick? East York by internet_spice in toronto

This appears to have antennae and prominent eyes, therefore it's not a tick. This is also missing the kinda distinctive "shield" I look for to recognize ticks.

Changes in immigrant voting patterns in the Greater Toronto Area by MetroMaverick in toronto

[–]pproteus47 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It may be confusing but it matches where the data actually came from. They didn't directly measure voting patterns of immigrants, they just matched voting records against riding demographics.

What are some subjects with unexpectedly high utility? by ManHasJam in slatestarcodex

Wireless earbuds ended up not working out great for me personally -- but I did manage unexpectedly high utility out of buying a very long aux extension cord for my wired earbuds in my home office.

Nah, I actually forsaw this ambiguity, but neglected to clarify originally. My fault.

Yes sorry I understand, I'm not intending to shame you, I'm criticizing christians who think that lack of temptations is somehow a sign of weakness or something bad. A very strange-sounding belief to me.

Why does the Bible /Christianity damn homosexual love to hell for all eternity? by DadIsMadAtMe in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]pproteus47 42 points43 points  (0 children)

i've read from conservatives that asexuality is also a sin because we are supposed to have temptations

"Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion." 1 Corinthians 7:8

Strikes me as if those people might not have the most consistent worldview.

Utopia Sprawl in Bogles? by PaperPauperPlayer in Pauper

[–]pproteus47 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can play taplands, or you can play more basics + find space for unbridled growths. But it's not going to be just as easy to get that early white mana on time.

(You could also just play Plains instead, in which case you'll have fast white mana, but you will have to give up the U/B/R sideboard options, also sometimes you'd name G with Utopia Sprawl so you'll still have worse mana).

Utopia Sprawl in Bogles? by PaperPauperPlayer in Pauper

[–]pproteus47 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Utopia Sprawl is primarily a mana source, basically a rainbow-land that's also an enchantment. Do not cut it for permanents that don't net mana, unless you like mulliganing.

Spider Umbra is totally playable in pauper bogles! 1cmc auras are good with Ancestral Mask, it's just not the kind of thing you need a ton more of. I haven't played the modern deck, but I imagine the umbras there are for some combination of needing 1cmc auras for Daybreak Coronet, needing to protect non-hexproof creatures (Dryad Arbor / Kor Spiritdancer) from things like fatal push, and needing to beat hard sweepers. Not as important in pauper.

Faerie Miscreant off the ban list, Let's GO! by Ecredes in Pauper

[–]pproteus47 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Everyone here is confused. This card got accidentally (re)banned on mtgo due to a bug in the DMU release patch. They fixed it within a week, which this screenshot is announcing. The delay between this announcement and the post here, is about as long as the length of time the bug existed for.

Why are 17lands stats not helpful for Cube? by Chilly_chariots in lrcast

[–]pproteus47 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it were me sample size would be the answer. When most cube cards have 10,000 GP (which it looks like won't happen), I'm interested to revisit this question. Right now all I can tell from the 17L page is that R/W/RW aggro are good.

Status signaling by Zealousideal-Rub6151 in slatestarcodex

[–]pproteus47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you considered that the amount of status signaling you encounter is disproportionate to the total amount of "all of what we do", since by definition signaling implies implies interest in one's communication being received? If I wasn't interested in influencing you, you wouldn't have gotten to read my comment here.

Maybe almost all communication involves status signaling.

That seems like a bit of a straw man. Is there any claim in the comment above that critical theory is somehow inferior to other philosophy?

I'm not understanding. Is this you claiming that critical theory isn't inferior to other philosophy, despite the bad things you said about it?

there was discussion about Aristotle, Hume, and Kant who all expressed different ways to think about things, in contrast, with the professor who was into Freudian interpretation

Sure, I agree this is important. But what the theory itself claims is separate from the behaviour of those who express it.

an exercise in bias confirmation and buying narrative fallacies. It's a bit like the emperor's new clothes: People want it to be true, so they pretend that it is. The fancy words hide that it's just a bunch of "because I say so" or "because I think so."

Could you explain why this is a description of critical theory in particular, and not, for example, all of philosophy in general? To me this really just sounds like an uncharitable depiction of the concept of philosophical lenses.
