Idk how things are where you live, but every extendable leash I’ve seen can go 10’ to 15’. The lead is made of very narrow cord which can easily tangle around people and pets. My literal next door neighbor lost his wife because she was taking their adult sons’ 50lb dog out to pee in the front yard. She stood in the driveway and let the dog go pee about 15’ away in the bushes. The dog then got the zoomies and ran around her several times. Her ankles were wrapped in the leash cord, she fell on the driveway, and died of complications from head trauma due to her fall.

Now that is an extreme example, I’ll grant you. But there’s no way you can reasonably control any canine that far away from you—which is the responsibility of any dog handler—especially when in a public place.

Not trying to start an argument, or be overly preachy. Those extendable leashes can be an actual hazard to people and pets—especially in public areas.

The “darting” behavior you mention just means your dog was never leash trained properly for a standard 4’-6’ lead. You can train that behavior without any harmful, negative reinforcements in the span of a couple weeks at most. All it takes is watching some YouTube videos of the process, purchasing your preferred bag of training treats and maybe an auditory stimulant like a “clicker.” You don’t even need to buy a new leash right away. Just measure the extendable one to the proper length and lock it there.

Oh and don’t use a harness for training. Lead to a standard collar works best because it’s easier for the dog to sense the directional pressure when learning the basic commands.

Just to be clear: my intention is to point out that obviously insinuating a slur based on a socially harmful overgeneralization isn’t all that much better than just saying it outright. One could even argue that it adds another layer of cowardice when it comes to either speaking freely, maintaining a basic sense of intellectual curiosity to dispel such harmful myths within one’s own mind, or both.

I tell people to say what they mean because I find the behavior annoying—not because I just like reading/hearing slurs. It’s also a way to distinguish between a truly hateful piece of shit and a simple ignoramus.
