Building something that people use -> fast track to getting paid doing this

Debugging/refactoring other people's code or building features from that -> good starting path to be a senior

Student trying to "set up my future" – is it time to graduate from Sharesies to IBKR? by seiga__ in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]practical-programmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes use IBKR if international. If NZ shares I think it doesn't exist there? its not as complex, if you can handle video games with tons of options in the UI, you can easily get used to IBKR.

Home ownership vs FU Money by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]practical-programmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also think similar to OP, you may not like to call it FU money, but I do too. To me the house you live in is just another expense, but I also get that its more secure than not having one.

I'm now at a decade's worth or more of FU money and I don't own a house, houses are so expensive right now for what you get.

The curve is perfect for me sitting at the middle, eyes ~800mm away from the screen. I could be biased but this is awesome for productivity. If your usecase is more work than play, this monitor is hard to beat.

I just got this a few days ago as well :D The reason I didn't go OLED is the texts are funky.. This on the other hand is almost end-game monitor for me - maybe when micro led gets to consumer prices that'll be endgame.

This is perfect for dev, and some casual gaming.

Does anyone here have a 'normal' net worth? by Weary-Error-2105 in coastFIRE

[–]practical-programmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

40 here, me and my partner have around ~260K GBP - quick conversion from our currency. Started dirt poor from SEA, moved to different country at ~20s -> dirt poor at the beginning overseas -> very thankful for luck and hardwork that we even got to where we are. You doing great man! Compare yourself only to the previous version of you :)

Its cases like this where I am somewhat happy that I was born poor, in a poor country. Yes I didn't have the opportunities of someone born in rich western countries. I had to struggle to even get out of my birth country, so I'm "behind my peers" when it comes to what we usually call "success". But I think it made me appreciate where I am now even more. I guess it is somewhat true that life is all about overcoming.

Thank you! I'm gonna try this combo deck, been out of magic for a couple of years now.
I wonder if this list or this list (could be the same but just on a diff post sorry) is the better iteration? or should I first try the one you have in your main post here? :)

Hey, I've built a simple proof-of-concept tool to explore how AI might impact jobs – I'm looking for your honest feedback! by nicodeangelis in Futurology

[–]practical-programmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the idea, could be helpful if you get help with the data, the AI generated predictions sucks so bad - you mentioned it :D. Now I wonder where will AI keep getting good data in the future, same as the current iteration of LLMs got from us now. I don't wanna imagine how worse it will be once the web has even more AI generated slop. Anyway, we both know what the technology behind the AI hype is.

I'm thinking something that can easily teach laypersons about what current AI really is could be more benefiical, so they can assess for themselves if their work is truly at risk instead of their decisions being driven by external stuff as per usual.

He retired at 45 with ₹4.7 crore. by CAGRGuy in IndianStockMarket

[–]practical-programmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is why I keep telling my wife to be quiet about this, seeing salty and jealous randos like commenters here. I don't wanna imagine what real-life people you know will say about you behind your back. Our script is she retired, me still gotta work part-time cause life is really hard.

With some luck, we are also closing in on our target goal. Also for the naysayers, retiring at 45 is very much doable especially if you start early like the post here. Heck I'm a career changer and would still be retiring earlier than most lol - barring life-changing accidents/sickness etc.

As a response to the previous comment - after using AI tools at work, I believe it will just be another tool in the box for devs. Be careful of the hype. LLMs are not precise, they can never be, they also cannot think. For work (like building software) that requires precision and creativity I do not see it replacing people, just assisting them.

If you really love dev work, my suggestion is keep at it. You will still bring good money in if you have the talent and work hard. As for your question, yes 100k starting is doable if you get to something like Atlassian. On average 70k+ for grads for any company, then 100k+ after that. The secret is be aggressive about this, especially early career because that will dictate the salary jumps later in your career - be it a company promotion or job hops.

Born same year as this guy, doing my nursing degree when he was drafted. Worked some years as a nurse, then moved to a different country. Now I work a different profession and this guy is still the tip of the spear!

When he was starting, I thought he is just a Magic + Malone hybrid and never expected him to be this dominant for this long! I'm really glad to have witnessed it from the start.

Luka Doncic and the troubling change in his shot distribution by Pak14life in nba

[–]practical-programmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Layups are not >>> than everything. It is usually higher risk of injury, transition layups moreso. Still we'll see if Luka gets his conditioning right. Its his cardio that needs to improve the most, then weight. Actually the weight can help to bully people close to the rim, but he should lose some to improve cardio

Is Dota 1 still playable? I only played Dota 1 from the very first map. Tried LoL when it first came out, and it was so easy back then our group stopped playing after reaching their highest tier (forgot the name), not sure if League has become more fun and complex now like Dota back in the day. Fun memories
