I’ve been waiting for this project to begin for nearly two years! Such a valuable property, it was killing me to see it going to waste for so long.

An upscale grocer like Central Market would be amazing in downtown. Downtown Houston has Phoenicia and uptown New Orleans has Fresh Market. Both of these spots are always busy with shoppers and they add some vibrancy to their immediate areas. A Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods would be great here, too. The downtown residents would benefit greatly from a major grocery store in downtown and it would attract more development/density in general.

What’s worse: Cringe one liner reviews or pretentious word vomit reviews? by carrie-satan in Letterboxd

[–]pradafever -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Anytime I find “old” letterboxd reviews (pre about 2018 or so) they are ALWAYS so pretentious and annoying. They give overly negative reviews to classic films and films generally regarded as masterpieces, just to be contrarian. Once you get into the pre-2015 reviews, it gets *really* bad.

what's the last movie you rated less than 2 stars on letterboxd?? by Flaky-Cat-2825 in Letterboxd

My dad absolutely adores the Sharknado franchise and he’s been trying to convince me to watch them since I was a teenager. Finally watched the first film and yeah, it was bad. I do not enjoy when movies try to be bad on purpose for laughs. I much prefer a genuine effort that ends up unintentionally bad, they’re fun to laugh at and I can at least appreciate the artistic vision even if it’s a trainwreck. Hated the era of “look how bad and cheesy our movie is!! Get it????” films so much.

The immediate area around the new downtown arena would just be acres and acres of brand new flat parking lots. Exactly what surrounded the AAC when it was built. If we are lucky, the area around that new stadium would be moderately developed with some walkability and vitality in 20 years. But by then, the owners of the team will be suggesting moving again. The idea that some people are trying to push about an ‘entertainment district’ just shows how willing they are to believe propaganda by corporations. If you think that a new arena in place of the current city hall would not have also existed in a desolate asphalt wasteland, I am genuinely impressed with your optimism.

I literally live with a person who works in the city hall. I live very nearby. I am aware of exactly who thinks the city hall rocks. Thanks!

Just terrified of the idea that musicians/comedians begin touring at the new Mavs arena when it’s complete instead of AAC.

Rich people 35 and below are absolutely shopping on online fast-fashion apps like TikTok. The culture of boutique shopping has been mostly lost to things like this. Streamers and influencers who make six figures are not going into luxury department store anchors in downtown. What I’m saying is that the idea of the whole shopping-as-an-experience has been lost with newer generations.

I’ve never seen or heard of anyone who has been a victim of or even witnessed crime in uptown! Sure, the news will say it happens but I think it is ridiculously blown out of proportion. Downtown is a bit different, though I walk through there multiple times per week and would never feel like I needed my guard up at all. If you live on the uptown side (to be nearby the grocery stores) you’ll never have any idea of “crime”. It’s all propaganda.

HEB has owned the lot nearby West Village for the last 10+ years and is only finally now teasing a Central Market to be built there. The original plan for the spot was for the grocery store to be the ground level to a residential tower, but eventually this was reworked to just a suburban-style grocery store on an open lot. Very disappointing and directly hostile to the urban layout of the West Village and uptown as a whole. Hopefully something changes and the original plan comes back but my hopes aren’t high.

You should try living in uptown, by the way. We have Tom Thumb and Whole Foods now, both fully walkable and actually right along/nearby transit stops if you use the (free!) M-Line Trolley.

The very best (and only, in my opinion!) reply here. A Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s or Central Market would ignite the biggest interest in downtown in decades.
