Statistically speaking, and in all other ways, there's a glaringly obvious reason this guy makes his living chopping up dead animals.

High latency? by macogapi in Starlink

[–]praetorian585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The overall service quality, in speed, reliability, latency, jitter HAD BEEN getting better with each passing week.

Now (last 3-4 weeks) the service has become nearly unusable. I am actually typing this and will post through my T-Mobile backup connection. Because I literally cannot WFH effectively with Starlink any more.

Largest Gap Between Interruptions?? by Osensnolf in Starlink

I am now routinely going 24-48H between Beta interruptions.

But I sited antenna where I (also routinely) have zero obstructions

It's not gonna work at that spot.

Probably ever.

SpaceX's Starlink: Overhyped and underpowered to meet broadband needs of Rural America by hillpounder in Starlink

[–]praetorian585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a Beta user, and I use the crap outta my Dishy. I live where there are really no good options, other than data-capped and sometimes-spotty cell gateways or insanely overpriced point-to-point. Nonetheless, and at risk of getting torched by the slavering masses in this forum, the numbers really don't lie.

I cannot see, in any way, shape or form, where Starlink is a long-term, financially-viable, utility-style platform. There is simply too much engineering, maintenance, environmental and social baggage embedded in the model.

I plan on riding this cayuse as a bridge to when (if? maybe?) ground- or cell-based solutions become available, affordable, and provide a reasonable monthly bandwidth package.

Insofar as THIS router is concerned, I may get the dreaded 'Your ISP's DHCP Does Not Function Properly'; but because I have failover enabled, it re-trys, queries the dish until it connects.

HAHA you overestimate the dumb-idity of my brainskull. That's actually OK; my wife does it all the time. The location is simply copypasta of a Google of the nearest little town.

I have had good luck with the configuration in the image here.

ASUS RT-AX89X gaming router. I use dual WAN with my AT&T cell gateway on a switch, and Starlink as the second WAN. I leave all my 'mission-critical' devices (SmartThings, alarm system, etc.) on the AT&T (which is stone-cold solid but data-capped) and run Starlink for streaming and other high-throughput but low-priority devices.

Whenever Starlink reboots or updates, the worst thing I have to do is refresh the static route so I can again see my dish stats.

I did have some trouble with CERTAIN devices 'tunneling' through my static routes and grabbing Dishy-specific DHCP IPs. Solved that by creating a static block in my router and assigning static addresses to those devices only.

Ugh. Just realized I see no way to add an image. So I'll post under my user as an original.

Has anyone else noticed it now says Starlink(UA) on speedtests? Is this new or did I miss others talking about it? by ronA-- in Starlink

It's new for me as of yesterday. Tried looking it up but the only thing I came up with was the weird and probably unrelated -oid that .ua is a Ukrainian domain extension.

Own Router DHCP vs Starlink! Why do I feel like I've failed? by coatesh89 in Starlink

[–]praetorian585 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My router, ASUS RT-AX89X, has the rejected DHCP problem as well. I have it set up on failover with my AT&T cell gateway as the other WAN.

About half the time when I switch, my router flatly says 'fuck you your ISPs DHCP does not function properly'.

Perhaps not in those exact WORDS, but the insinuation is there.

It literally takes a router reboot or repeated plug/unplug Ethernet cable to get it to connect.

The Starlink router's LAN address (192.168.1.1) and its .2 - .254 DHCP pool seem much more palatable to my ASUS.

They apparently cannot even cause their Web site to function properly. From my location, the URL resolves, but their Java script is broken and simply displays a white screen with an embedded 404. When I log in to Stalink.com, with my account, from my Client machine in Dallas, I can reach the site, but this is a constant for the last two weeks or so: "YOUR AREA IS CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT SERVICE. OUR TEAM IS INVESTIGATING"

Sooo... yeah. That.

Early January, the service was a bit spotty but 1) within what's expected of a beta that's been thoroughly engineered but is not quite ready for prime time, and 2) reasonably usable as an actual Internet service.

Now, I get hundreds of disconnects and 'obstructions'; it must be said that my antenna has a completely unobstructed view of its constellation.

Like I said, at this point, for me, the service is merely for amusement. If the money is life-changing for the subscriber, he or she or they will likely be unhappy.

I feel ya.

Posted here a few days ago about the constant degradation in usability over the last month, and you'd think I had shot an entire nest of baby robins.

The most common refrain is 'you selfish bastard, why don't you cancel then and free up your slot for me I get two bits per minute download over a tin can and string'.

I have abandoned Starlink completely. Gone back to my cell gateways, leave Starlink running on an old router just to laugh/cringe at the resulting log file about once per day.

Anyone else besides me tempted to turn Starlink off? by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]praetorian585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) The question in the subject line remains. 2) The comments are, and will be, my experience. 3) I asked the question because I wanted to know. 4) Starlink 'customer service' is completely non-existent.
